i didn't notice until just now that in the dirty mop outtake matt asks "how much is it?" and jay says "it's a Vileda." that princess didn't even answer the question. i've watched this like 10 times now.

I feel like very early on there was this little umbrella motif that didn't really come back until the movie and I'm sure I'm going to sound insane even mentioning it but I keep thinking about that story they love to bring up in interviews about how when they were first living together on queen st. they ran home in the rain and Matt was thinking "why would anyone ever need an umbrella?" bc it felt so nice being outside and he was so happy even though he was getting soaked. I don't know the exact timing on that event but it's interesting to me that Matt had that experience and then did several visual gags with an umbrella in the web series (opening one up inside to give Jay bad luck, opening one at the end of peanuts, etc) and you can even spot it in one photoshoots from around that time as well.

Idk it almost seems like they wanted it there as some kind of recurrent prop but then we don't see them with one again until the film. I love the idea that you can kind of use that little visual metaphor as a means of tying their early era to where they are by the events of the film. It's interesting too bc is always with Matt. Matt's not wet at all when he comes back inside after their failed cn tower stunt but Jay is soaked. Matt is unscathed! Matt doesn't care that opening one inside is supposed to be bad luck! We never actually get to see it being used for its intended purpose in web series bc Matt only ever has it inside, he uses it to be goofy or tease Jay about his silly superstitions or for a dramatic effect (like at the end of Peanuts). But by the events of the film it is being used practically, Matt actually does need shelter from the rain and he doesn't offer any of it to Jay. Matt has lived 20 more years by then, has had to face various disappointments and failures and mistakes but Matt manages to find a way to stay dry. Jay, on the other hand, is soaked all the way down to his bare skin with nothing to prevent the uncomfortable feeling that comes with being drenched. idk lol just something ive been rolling around in my brain recently
