How are we growing?
It all began with Industrial Revolution, Mexico experienced a rapid ans excessive growth. Cities like Mexico, Guadalajara and Monterrey start spreading all around the place, growing larger and larger with no censor.
With Mexico´s land reform, peasant farmers received more than 100 million hectares of land, kind of half Mexico´s territory. They established 30 000 ejidos or village communal holdings in which people could farm in order to grew food. However, this wasn´t the solution, and today many of those farmers live in really poor situations.
Later on, cities began “eating” all of those land used for agriculture. Demographic growth became excessive because of medical advances causing a high demand of housing, a demand cities infrastructure no longer fulfill. The government began giving any type of permission to developers so they could build and build lots of living spaces. As a consequence, cities grew with no urban planning.
We can see two main types of housing in Mexico: informal and formal (legal) urbanization. According to the Mexican Institute of Competition, 67% of housing in Mexico is informal. This constitute a problem because this scenario has no regulation, urban growth cannot be controlled. Poor people build their own houses because their possibilities don´t give them access for more. Therefore, because it has no regulation from the government, they are “out of the map”, they suffer for lack of all public services. Until the government, by pressure, install basic services to their land. It´s not the quality of life any person deserve.
But this is not the only problem. As we usually see in our system, there´s corruption everywhere and the construction industry it´s not the exception. When we travel through federal roads, sometimes we see isolated settlements. How much time do families spend on traveling all the way up there? Even more, family heads who have to go and work too early at the morning. Often, they don´t have time to get back and have a meal in family, so the spend on food. The usually arrived to their houses too late, only to have dinner and sleep. And this their routine everyday. Children go to the closest school of their home, most of the time, these schools don´t have the needed quality but they don´t have any other option. This type of housing carry too many problems like families´ segregation, transportation costs, no social interaction with their neighbors, housing abandonment, services problems, insecurity because houses are alone though the day, no identity between houses, etc. And all of this because developers wanted to earn money in the land cost. You end up making the poor, more poor and the rich, richer. Where´s equality and transparency in all this process?
We think we don´t nothing to do with these problems, but in fact, bad urban planification it´s a vicious circle that causes pollution, traffic, insecurity and many other problems we all complained daily.
Laws and new legislation have to be strong enough to benefit everyone, government, institutions and inhabitants, not just the interests of a few. Urbanization can´t be the only use we give to all existing lands. Creating ways in which cities can coexist, promote social interaction. Make houses more available for everyone so that cities grow in a more planified way.
But we have to be prepared to income all obstacles presented in the way to achieve what sound like an utopia.

The Hannover principles from William McDonough were written on 1992, and they can still be applied today, even more, there are further more right nowadays. Industrial Revolution brought so many radical changes to our ways of living and we haven´t learn how to deal with them. It seems that we live in a constant fight with nature instead of learning how to coexist with it.
First of all, we need to understand we are part of a whole, of an huge entity, we cannot think we own it, therefore we have to respect it, take care of it, maintain a relationship without harming it.
We are being selfish, we are hungry for more, just because we have all that we need and a lot more. And what about future generations? Do they will know a little bit of the world as we know it? I doubt it and it´s really so sad. The world, our home, give us magnificent gifts everyday, from beautiful sunrises to delightful nights. And what do we give in return? Just damage without any sense. We have to get rid of the idea that everything is disposable.
As I think it should be...
SUSTANAIBILITY, I think that’s the answer for everything, why? It’s a concept involving three of the most important values: nature, social interaction and economy. Therefore our designs should be focused on being sustainable. Let’s explore a little bit more of them.
Nature. It’s amazing how in about twenty years we’ve been destroying and damaging our world. Construction is one of the most contaminating activities because all the processes there are held. It’s time to start looking for alternatives for better materials, not because the common is to use concrete and steel, means it’s the best option. We have to be open for new ideas as crazy as they sound, and start spreading that knowledge. But be careful, it’s imperative to use materials of the place, it world be a completely bad idea to use bamboo in. Canada for example. I encourage you to take a look into the past, they used to take advantage of everything they have closely, resulting in a non harmful way to the environment. Nature has been always wise, we should learn from it and make architecture that mimic the way nature adapts to itself, making use of tools such as technology.
Social interaction. As architects we should be aware that we can create spaces that benefit not only to the inhabitants of the place but to people around it. In places, where security is at low levels, we can be the key for creating spaces where people can interact and form relationships to take care of each other. We need cities that induce interaction between classes, not architecture that segregate. We should think in the city and its context when designing a project, not only in the building or house we are about to build. We must try to give something else to the city. Promoting social interaction has to be a principal feature in our projects.
Economy. You can benefit a city by making a powerful project that attracts people and increase economy of the place. But we also have to make architecture available for everyone. Even when we are making social architecture, we have to make it livable, people need sufficient spaces to live, not just the minimal.
On the other hand I think we cannot make the same architecture everywhere, each place has its own culture, history and identity therefore architecture should be a reflection of each unique characteristic of the place. As Renzo Piano said: true universality can be attained only through connection with the roots, gratitude for the past, and respect for the genius loci.
People can choose not to see a painting but they cannot choose to see a building in the middle of the town.
Design, Ecology and some other things
William McDonough, a well-known architect, once pronounced what its called The Centennial Sermon, where he exposed his thoughts about the existent relation between architecture and ecosystems. Now, I´ll make a short reflection about it.
Nowadays we are having trouble in finding ways on how to make harmonious living spaces with nature, we use this technology or the other one or the other, in much more complicated ways. I think the solution is more simple than we think, just take a look at the past, where they didn´t have advanced methods to do it, they used only passive systems taking advantage of nature without damaging it. More important, we have to learn from nature itself, how its symbiotic relationships are so perfect, that doesn´t need anything else. The moment we understand nature, we´ll be able to design the way it has to be.
As the author said, we must understand life is all about cycles, there are everywhere, and here is the importance. If everything eventually returns from it came from, it´s improbable we produce large amounts of waste, or even a few. The chain has to change, there can´t be more “getting rid of it”, instead we have to think “how can use it in a different way?”, just get out of the box, that´s we need, creativity to use what we called “waste” in different things.
But here, we have the most problematic issue, consumerism. It´s all over around us, you have to buy the latest phone to be cool, you have the newest car, clothes, products, everything to be happy. We have to forget this thought and concentrate in more important things, like nature and the way we are finishing with it.
I think we, as architects, have the duty of design for people, without letting aside its relation with other ecosystems in nature. We must have to perfectly integrate this two entities by starting thinking of them as one. We can powerfully influenced in how people live and behave, if we take advantage of this leverage wisely, we can really start talking about a change. So please don´t just design strange and rare forms unconsciously, give it a reason.
“The architect of the future will be based on the imitation of nature, because it is the most rational, durable and affordable way to all methods”. Antoni Gaudí
