Provisional Cast Ons
I can't say that I really like any of these methods, but here they are. Perhaps provisional cast ons are simply not one of my favorite things.
Of them all, this one from Tin Can Knits might be my fav and I wish I'd gone here first: http://blog.tincanknits.com/2013/03/10/crochet-chain-provisional/
Knitty.com tackles several techniques on this page, but provisional is the first: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall05/FEATfall05TT.html
iKnits Glossary offers this video of the "easiest" method: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_T7OwOpC6CY

Duplicate Stitch in Knitting
Using duplicate stitches on your knitting is a great way to add color after you've finished knitting a piece. It can also be a way to add a pattern that you otherwise don't want to do with intarsia. How to create duplicate stitches with instructional pictures, from The Purl Bee (by Purl Soho): http://www.purlbee.com/2007/10/28/duplicate-stitch/ Simple pics from Lion Brand: http://www.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/faq-search.cgi?faqKey=253 KnitPicks video tutorial: http://tutorials.knitpicks.com/wptutorials/embroidery-how-to-do-the-duplicate-stitch/ Free picture tutorial on Craftsy: http://www.craftsy.com/blog/2013/07/duplicate-stitch-knitting-tutorial/
2015 SMKG Popular Designer Club Challenge Begins!!
The 2015 SMKG Popular Designer Club Challenge runs from December 8, 2014 to November 30, 2015. There's still time to whip up something from one of our chosen designers as a last minute holiday gift for 2014 and it will count towards the goal of four patterns. And all of the following are FREE. Jared Flood's "Turn a Square" simple but impressive striped hat: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/turn-a-square Another by Jared Flood. The "Morningside Neckwarmer": http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/morningside-neckwarmer Martina Behm's baby neckerchief, "Scollo-Pie": http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/scallo-pie Ysolda Teague's monochromatic chevron slouchy hat, "Tombreck": http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/tombreck Ysolda's garter stitch, fingerless mitts: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/garter-stitch-mitts Another pattern from Ysolda is the "Urchin" beret, all garter stitch and chunky: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/urchin Three different hats from Veera Välimäki: "Little Things"-- http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/little-things "Brightest Day"-- http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/brightest-day "Merry Berry"-- http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/merry-berry Tin Can Knits' "Barley" hat is simple and comes in a huge range of sizes (baby to adult large): http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/barley-2 Tin Can Knits also has a pattern for a fingerless mitt with a full mitten option, "Maize," which also features their hallmark range of sizing (toddler to adult large): http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/maize-3 Finally, the "Antler Hat" is a quick cabled project, also from Tin Can Knits (baby to adult sizing): http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/antler-hat
For all levels, but beginners especially:
Tin Can Knits (http://www.tincanknits.com/) rocks for so many reasons. Here's an extra special one. They have an entire collection of patterns available for FREE designed especially to walk the new knitter from first scarf to first sweater! Rita de Maintenon's Complete Crochet
Smoky Mountain Knitting Guild (http://smkguild.com/) may remember our wonderful program this past year by Rita de Maintenon on crochet and crochet history. At Tuesday's class, I mentioned that I received her newsletter and she'd recently unveiled a new website with crochet lessons. I was not exactly correct, but there will be educational material available. Here is the "complete" new web site: http://completecrochet.com/ Some of the content is only available to paid subscribers. Here is her Heirloom Treasures Fiber Arts site, which includes news about upcoming events and workshops: http://completecrochet.com/heirloomtreasures/
Crochet Appliques
Suvi's Crochet blog (http://suviscrochet.blogspot.com/) has an incredible wealth of crochet patterns (complex cables from the Book of Kells!), but here's a pretty basic Dogwood flower and leaf. http://suviscrochet.blogspot.com/2014/05/dogwood.html Simple Flower by Bailee L. Wellisch http://littleabbeepatterns.blogspot.com/2012/04/simple-flower-pattern.html Butterfly by Viktoriya Isakina Ravelry free download: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/butterfly-42 Video (scroll down on the page): http://wwwikaisakina.blogspot.com/2014/06/butterfly.html
Crochet Tutorials via Ravelry
If you knit, crochet, loom knit, or machine knit, and aren't already a member (free!) of http://www.ravelry.com, you really, really, really should join it right now!! It takes a day or so to be "approved", but that is basically a formality to help avoid duplicate memberships that put unneeded strain on their system. If you are not yet a member, you can still click on these links and see a little bit of what you're missing, but members will be able to click on through to more details. Often these are PDF downloads or links to other websites that are cataloged in Ravelry to make it easier for crafters to find. All of the following are FREE and I found them via Ravelry: SC Single Crochet Chain Edge Tutorial by Margaret MacInnis (specifically for use with knitted garments): http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sc-single-crochet-chain-edge-tutorial Slip Stitch Edge Tutorial by Margaret MacInnis: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/slip-stitch-edge-tutorial How Do I Work Around the Edges? by CopperScaleDragon: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/how-do-i--work-around-the-edges---tutorial ***The following stitch was mentioned in Mary's class on Tuesday. Another member of the Guild had used it on one of his knitted garments. It is sometimes called "backwards crochet".
