「step by step,
and then jiyeon lights up. “ oh my god, ” exclaiming as she jumps up from her seat on the floor. “ if they feel…i mean i just–, ” she waves her hand in the direction of the mess of machinery in front of them, “ i just ripped your laptop apart! i hurt them, ” she gasps, frantically freaking out with her voice reaching higher volumes, “ i hurt you! ” jiyeon suppresses a scream that threatens its way out and throws herself in jongdae’s lap. “ oh my god, i’m so sorry! ” her arms finds purchase around his neck as she clings onto him. her face is buried into his shoulder.
truth be told, jongdae always had wondered why he cared just so much for others. it was both ethically and morally right, to be honest, to be kind and cordial to other human being. since he’d experienced, quite personally, the desolate sort of sentiment that one could experience from such humanistic rejection, jongdae had vowed to become some sort of a paradoxical savior, much like a martyr, to help others avoid such a lonesome ordeal. and along the way, undoubtedly, he’d made some unforgettable memories and a motley crew of extraordinary friends (though, in retrospect, the ‘extraordinary’ aspect sounds a little damning) that intensified his belief that being cordial was good.
but he hadn’t quite realized that he was worrying so much for others because it lessened the strain of concern on himself. in a way, it was laughably ironic—he’d learned so many things along the way, but he hadn’t learned to say ‘no’ just yet. in some situations, he knew that what he was doing was stressful on his own body and mind; though he was setting himself up for an inevitable fall, he was willing to sacrifice for the sake of others. he would never admit to this, nor would he wish to; because in a world of valiant heroes and gallant champions meant to conquer and change the world, jongdae was fine being the mediocre backdrop (as long as he was a part of it all).
when he worried for others and their wellbeing, he could place himself out of the equation. jongdae didn’t want to admit to it, to submit to such a ruinous thought, but it was true. how many times had he found himself waking from the cold floor to greet the brisk morning air after he’d blacked out from overuse of his technopathical stimuli? could he truly, with a honest-to-goodness, cross-his-heart sort of confidence say that he did half the things that he told others to do? the answer is clear in his mind, reverberating with a desperate murmur, but jongdae tries to drown it out. he loathed trying to face this sort of confrontation, because it only strengthened the feeling of being a hypocrite— he’s startled out of his incriminating thoughts, quite thankfully, when he feels jiyeon flee into his arms. he may have opened his mouth to talk, but jongdae can’t hear anything in the air, so he must’ve stopped himself from voicing out his sentiments. her apologies are frantic, wired up by the abrupt information that he’d set up on her just moments before, and he can’t help but to feel immensely apologetic right back. his eyebrows slant outwards, drooping, as he tries to calm his dear, dear friend. he had known that he’d have to let out the fact that he’d been connected, now, to all sorts of technology, to his friends; truthfully, though, he hadn’t found that time to have crept up on him so soon. he bites his lower lip, nibbling slightly, as he raises his hand to brush through her soft, pleasant locks. “it’s okay, jiyeon, i’m okay,” he says, his other hand rubbing placid circles into the small of her back as he tries to catch a glance of her face (an impossible feat, really, since her face is pressed into the warm junction of his shoulder where it meets his neck), “—my fault for putting it out. and not telling you. or the others. about this.” it’s odd to hear such disconnected, fragmented words slip out from his mouth; he’s aware that he’s forming the words with his teeth and tongue, rolling and moving to create the diction that he’s worked so hard to build up, but jongdae pushes that aside for now. the quality of his priority-setting was rarely proven erroneous, and at this exact moment, he knew that his number one concern was jiyeon. “it’s alright. i think we can classify this a learning experience, for both of us. i didn’t know the extent of this technopathic bond, to be honest. i knew that i was spending more and more time becoming connected, but … i didn’t think that it’d be this intensely-wired. and it didn’t hurt, really.” jongdae places a necessary emphasis, but he does mean it to a genuine degree. “—just a little zap. like when you short cir—i mean, when you feel a little static. it just came out of the blue, you know? wasn’t expecting it. that’s all!” he wracks his head for a further explanation, but he can’t really pull out a similar feeling. the pain, at the heat of it all, had been acrimonious, excruciating; but coming down from it, all he felt was a dull spark that’d settled, baseless and coiled around his ribs like a wronged serpent. he tries to tug her away from his shoulder, even just for a second, to glance into her eyes (and wipe away any tears if caught sight of any). the corners of his lips are arced, pleasant and gentle, and his voice takes on a soothing timbre. “hey. it wasn’t you. i won’t be too cliché and finish that phrase, but i mean it. if anything, you taught me a great lesson—one that i couldn’t even dream to learn from anywhere else.” jongdae breathes, pulling her back into a warmed embrace. honestly, he can’t imagine telling the others about this predicament of this technopathic bond, but he feels less fearful with jiyeon here. he decides to deal with that gargantuan mess of a dragon when it rears its ugly head.
“—thank you.”

「setting priorities,
“it’s me–” he gives himself a second to breathe, and another to think of something to say. “i can explain.” he finally success to turn on the light, making him squint. he throws his phone, keys and headphones to one side of the couch before heading to the room. “i may have made some bad decisions last night.” with a sheepish smile, taeyong tries to look as harmless as he can manage. “hey there. nice jammies.”
jongdae has a pretty good idea on who his sudden guest might be, but he knows not to mindlessly assume (although, honestly, his intuition has never really failed him before). he allows his eyes to fall back closed again, his worried frown tipping upwards to create his quirked, characteristic little smile; he can’t really bring himself to be upset, but he’s sure that his startled heart probably suffered for a good minute. when the slightly-slurred “ah, fuck,” reaches his ears, he can’t help but to whisper “language,” under his breath, more habitual than anything else, before sluggishly pulling himself up from his warm, thick covers. his fingers brush over the softness of it, almost as if he’s longingly parting from a compassionate lover (aren’t all beds?), before sitting up to slide his feet into his comfortable house slippers (that’re shaped suspiciously like a famous cartoon penguin).
before he can get up from his bed, though, the light turns on, sharply, abrupt and impetuous, and jongdae lifts both his hands to cover his bleary eyes, a mouthful of retorts welling up atop his tongue. discourteous! he was rather patient with a lot of various topics and behaviors, truly, but he never appreciated being woken up so brusquely. contrary to commonly-assumed belief, jongdae wasn’t actually an easy waker, nor was he enthusiastic to the idea of waking up early. he was a light sleeper, sure (especially even more so now, since every mechanical transmission in the vicinity electrified his nerves on a consistent, reoccurring basis), but he loved putting his weary body and mind to rest each night. for some, sleeping was a habitual necessity. to him, though, it was more like a religious ritual.
he finds that he can’t be too upset, however, when he sees taeyong’s face. he’s pallid, cold sweat dotting his features; in the right moment (that isn’t now), jongdae thinks that it could look cherubic, precious—like a porcelain boticelli with encrusted diamonds of the morning dew—but right now, his friend looks absolutely ghastly, and he’s not meaning to offend. when he’d been in the dark, the canvas of black enshrouding taeyong in its midst, he’d had an inkling of growing suspicion that this visitation would turn out to be a serious case. he loved being right, but ...
jongdae’s eyes quake minutely, almost in a perfect mimicry of a seismic temblor, and has to force himself to maintain his composure. all he wants to do is to stand up, throw the covers off of his lap, and reach out with his warm fingers to seek out taeyong for wounds, bruises, or a chaste fever. he knows that he probably wouldn’t appreciate that, though, so he sits still and fidgets with quickly-cooling fingers. feigning nonchalance was a difficult act for him, but he’d keep it up as much as he had to (if that meant keeping his friends comfortable). the comment on his pajamas brings him back to the future from the depth of his thoughts, and he opens his mouth to speak.
"taeyong?” he breathes, and tries to glue back his breaking voice into one channel. “—forget about the jammies, i know they’re superb,” jongdae says, waving his hands animatedly in the air and getting up to clear up the couch at the side of his room, “have you eaten? real food, i mean.” not junk, or alcohol. he can say a lot more at that moment, but he’d become significantly talented at holding back his torrential pour of words when he deemed it unfit. he turns back to face taeyong, only then reaching up with shy fingers to trample down at the messy hair at the back of his own neck, and gives a light smile. “sorry for startling like that when you first came in—it’s been a tiring couple of days.”
after a moment of consideration, his smile grows, reaching his eyes and setting those brown oculars alight with warm regards. he reaches over and taps taeyong on the shoulder, light and airy. “and don’t put your hands up like you’re a guilty criminal, taeyong. you know you’re always welcome, whatever the time. only god can judge, and i don’t think i’m ready to deify myself and give up my humanity just yet.”

「step by step,
“ i—the laptop? ” she takes a futile glace back at the pieces lying tragically on the table, “ is it because i took it apart? i—, ” she cuts herself off with her teeth biting down on her bottom lip in regret, “ i don’t know anything about technology like you. i can’t understand if it’s not books or art. you have to explain it to me. i—i don’t understand. ” her tone is soft, but frustrated and biting. jiyeon feels a need to stomp her feet like a child. she’s just a bit short of crying. jongdae is looking at her like it’s urgent to know that she understands. but she feels like she’s in one of her visions. everything is being thrown at her too fast and too much. but there’s a need to relate despite the vast disconnection from her and the situation. jongdae’s hand weighs heavy in hers. she feels like breaking down and sobbing in his living room right then.
jongdae's brain and mind compete against each other, running a rapid race of incomprehensible speeds, and he's so lost that he doesn't really recognize himself. he’s once again reminded of the futility of becoming knowledgeable only through conventional learning—if he couldn’t effectively utilize his intelligence for the further empowerment of his actions, then what other good was it for? he licks his chapped lips, a swipe of dry tongue against drier skin, and clenches his hand into a fist at his side, vowing to bolster his tentative decision he’d been previously fighting against. though he’d felt a slight flutter of liberation settle in his chest after his incredibly impromptu confession, jiyeon was probably quite disoriented, and understandably so.
“i wasn’t knowledgeable about technology at all, actually,” he starts, and the words are so feeble and discordant that it leaves a particular taste in his mouth, “—it’s a recent development, an ongoing process of active learning.” his voice shakes, its oscillation accentuated in the tense silence. if jongdae wanted to be completely honest, this wouldn’t have happened if he had explored this weakness of his ability beforehand; if he had familiarized himself the delicate specificities of the empathetic bond, maybe he could’ve averted this catastrophe. he knows that he shares numerous similarities with jiyeon, especially on the aspect that they were more well-acquainted with book smarts than street smarts, and when she admits that she doesn’t understand, hollow frustration lacing her words with an acidic edge, jongdae can relate so much that he feels dizzy. jongdae guides her, slightly, back to the direction of the dismantled machinery, and encourages her to be seated on the flat floor cushions. though he’s closer in proximity, the severed bond has placed an ironic barrier-like layer of protection around his sensitive mind, and he finds that he’s (thankfully) less distressed. he puts a soft smile on his features, the corners of his eyes giving their distinctive crinkle to showcase its validity, and gives her hand a reassuring squeeze. though his hand had been cold a moment before, clammy with sweat, they’re warm, now. he maintains his sincere hold until she is willing to look at him, and continues only when she does. “jiyeon. knowledge is secondary; understanding is primary. do you know how i know?” he reaches over and pours a cup of steaming aromatic green tea into a handleless teacup with his free hand; he purposefully chooses the handless piece so that she can use the warmth of the liquid to heat her hands and soothe her frazzled nerves. he slides it, gently, in her direction, and continues speaking, fingers rubbing across her knuckles in the most comforting manner he knows how. “—a lot of people know us. right? but not a lot of people understand us. with comprehension comes true knowledge. you just have to take one step at a time, you know? step by step.” jongdae inhales. “technopathy, just by definition, refers to the manipulation of technology through communication. that’s simple enough. but because that communication is fundamentally dependent on feelings—explaining the ‘-pathy’ suffix of its greek root, pathos—initial access requires the user to create an empathetic bond with the machinery. continued connection reinforces this bond and bolsters them together. the user can talk with the machine, and the machine can talk back. soon, they can exchange sentiments. feelings.” he’s willing to continue speaking, to explain to the best of his ability, but he thinks that he’ll first offer her a moment to absorb and mull over all of the information he was subjecting her to. a breather would beneficial for the both of them.
「step by step,
“ what am i doing? what are you doing? ” she pouts at him, rubbing at her wound. it only registers then that he looks a little ruffled. his eyes were blown, forehead a little damp with his face twisted in distressed. jiyeon drops the screwdriver unceremoniously onto the laptop with little care. it makes a harsh clunk as the metal meets. she stands up, grabbing at his wrist, “ you’re sweating. did you cut yourself with a knife? ” she says this half in worry, half in amusement but her eyes scan his hands in alarm.
jongdae is shocked at his own aggressive display, too. he takes a couple of faltering steps backwards, though he pauses when he glances at the screwdriver left in free-fall. he sucks in a breath just as the metal tool drops against the surface of the laptop, and his vision blurs in a spatter of fractured chroma; jongdae didn't know how it would feel to die of a splintered cranium, but he thinks that it'd be pretty similar to the experience he was going through now. he's trying to hold himself together, but he feels as if there's something missing, leaving him undone. in a way, one could label it as liberating, but to him, it's damning. he can't stifle the groan that escapes his lips, eyes rolling wildly in their sockets as he drowns out the outside noise with something inexplicably visceral.
「ᴛʜᴀᴛ ʜᴜʀᴛs. ᴛʜᴀᴛ ʜᴜʀᴛ ᴍᴇ. ᴛʜᴀᴛ ʜᴜʀᴛ ʏᴏᴜ, ᴛᴏᴏ. ɴᴏ, ɴᴏ. ᴛʜᴀᴛ ʜᴜʀᴛ ᴜs. ᴡᴇ ᴀʀᴇ ᴏɴᴇ, ᴊᴏɴɢᴅᴀᴇ. ᴘɪᴇᴄᴇᴅ ᴀᴘᴀʀᴛ, ᴜɴsᴄʀᴇᴡᴇᴅ ᴛᴏ ʙɪᴛs. ʏᴏᴜ ʟᴇᴛ ᴛʜɪs ʜᴀᴘᴘᴇɴ?」
he tries to speak. no, no! jongdae's been exposing himself to the weaknesses of his ability, slowly, carefully, but he hadn't seen this even near the sea he had been dipping his toes into. he swallows, thickly, and tries to reconnect to the voice in his subconscious, but it disappears like an impuissant tide under the undertow of a stronger torrent, ebbing away until its form lost shape. the more he reaches for it, to curl his fingers around its loose spools to try and reconnect them into existence, the faster it flees from him, leaving him painfully barren. being left like that, alone and powerless without any sort of an understanding of the situation, creates a gaping maw in his heart, and jongdae truly understands the meaning of desolation—not by words or by definition, but through sentimentality.
he's reminded of why he's worked so hard to become knowledgeable.
the feeling of someone's fingers on his wrists snaps him out of his slight reverie, but he's still shaken. jongdae blinks wetness out of his eyes and is startled to see through glass eyes, blurred and opaque, but realizes that it's just tears. he hurriedly swipes at his cheeks, glancing down at jiyeon, and tries to give an apologetic smile as he opens his mouth to speak, but he can't think of words. or sentences. or phrases. his movements are stiff, almost mechanic, and the way his brain whirs mimics that of a rotator fan. his slanted brows furrow. he can't word his thoughts. what is he to say to jiyeon? he probably startled her and hurt her, too, judging by the way that she had gripped her elbow to her chest. but what ... what was it? he needed to express his remorse, because he had caused her discomfort. what was that word? he needed to ... oh! oh. he needed to apologize. but what comes out of his mouth is:
"ʏᴏᴜ ʜᴜʀᴛ ᴍᴇ." even when it leaves his lips, jongdae feels uncomfortable. it doesn't sound like him; it's tinged gray, almost metallic, and sounds like an automaton. he shakes his head, stares into her eyes with his own, and breathes. deep. steady. he focuses on the pull of air through his teeth, and how it makes his heart move. a weighted thump echoes in his chest, armored by a protective ribcage. there's blood vessels that carry iron-rich blood through his veins, thorough and thick, and he's made of ivory bone. he's not a machine, a piece of technology, that runs of wires and circuits and maintains its coded knowledge in a complex chip of motor gears and electronic coils. he's human. by god, he's human.
he licks his lips and tries again, flexing his wrist and feeling the tautness around his muscles and cartilage, and meets her eyes with something more alive than just contraptive parts. "jiyeon. jiyeon, god. i'm so, so sorry. i'm sorry. you didn't hurt me, at all! are you alright? i didn't mean to push you away so hard, i ..." his words are a torrential pour, and though it's heavy and rushed, he blooms in it; there's light in his eyes again, and his actions are animated and genuine. "... i, i'm ... i'm still dealing with my ability, believe it or not. i can't sever the connection, it's like i'm always talking to someone alive and it's—i'm bound to it, whatever it is. so when you took the laptop apart, i ..." he stops himself from speaking any more, gaze pleading and vulnerable, a rare show, and lets her process the information he's entrusted her; his other hand, the one that’s not held by her own, rests on his wild chest.

「step by step,
“just give me a moment,” jongdae calls over his shoulder as he gives a slight tilt of his chin to glance at his guest sitting in his cozy little living room, “i’ll get us some snacks!”
he’d invited jiyeon over for a day of relaxation, expecting to chitchat about simple topics and enjoy each other’s company. after all, a good majority of the entire summer was spent on them trying to figure their abilities and become familiar with the implausible circumstance at hand; it would serve well to move away from that tiresome focus. jongdae gives a few meaningless blinks, lashes brushing against the apples of his cheeks for a split second, before he bends to open his fridge. there’s cubed tofu and kimchi and eggs (lined up for easier access), but he thinks that it’d be better to go for something lighter. his eyes end up falling on the basket of ripe red apples, and picks three up to wash and peel. he knows that he has some bags of chips on the second cupboard, too, so he’ll get that later.
it’s impossible, jongdae finds, to stray away from the topic of their newfound ability for too long. he gives a slight sigh as he twists the faucet on, fingers turning cold under the freezing spray, and wipes the apples clean of any imperfections. his thoughts wander. jongdae knew that many of his friends appreciated and were coming to terms with their applications, but to him, technopathy was still quite a mystery. the more he tried to learn about it, to delve in and become knowledgeable again, he found that it slipped through his fingers like liquid silk. he knew that he was overthinking it, which was a certain negative habit of his that he was trying to get rid of, but … well, everything took time. he’d take this step by step—
he lets out a sharp cry that sounds a little too much like a yelp, but he finds that he can’t really be embarrassed about it for too long; he’s able to remember what he’s been holding, though, and barely manages to drop the knife into the sink (instead of on his foot, ow). in his hurry to move away, he elbows the basket of clean apples off of the counter, and they tumble away in various directions. his heart hurts. his ribs feel as if it’s becoming constricted, bent out of shape and manifested to be splayed out in a grotesque show. he clutches at his sink until his fingers turn a pallid white. maybe it’ll pass. he doesn’t know what this is, and even though he scrolls past descriptions of illnesses and symptoms that he’s etched into his mind, he can’t figure it out. it worsens his nausea.
after a while, the harsh jabs have subsided, and he can pull himself up to stand again. it’s completely illogical to think that he’s physically hurt, but the pain that he’d experienced a mere second ago was so real that he didn’t know what to think; his quaking hands move on their own accord, brushing down the front of his body with panicked fervor. jongdae bites down on his lower lip to stifle his harsh breathing, and stops putting so much pressure in his jaw when he tastes sharp metal on his tongue. he can’t really describe what he’s feeling mentally, but physically, it feels as if his insides have been wrenched apart, dependent puzzle pieces separated to become an independent puzzle of its own. he doesn’t know what it is that leads his feet to move, but he’s moving. slow, stiff steps lead him out to the living room, where he sees jiyeon.
and his laptop. disassembled. his soft brown eyes widen, pupils blown out, as he rushes to the scene. he doesn’t mean to put so much pressure and strength behind it, but he reaches to stop her, cold sweat breaking out at his nape and dribbling down his back. “w-what are you doing!?”

「setting priorities,
jongdae blankly stares out his window, cold fingers wrapped around a warm mug full of hot barley tea, and presses his lips against the rim. he blows on it, nonchalantly, and takes a few cautious sips. the heated liquid runs down his throat and pools in his stomach, slow and pleasant, and he lets out a small sigh; he’d been staring out at the night sky for quite some time, now, finding the stars too stunning to ignore. he pulls the mug away from his lips, tilting his head to try and catch sight of his favorite constellations, when he’s interrupted by a brazen ring. the sound is cacophonous and obnoxious, meant to disturb, and he snaps out of his reverie, head snapping to his cellphone. with a lingering sense of longing settling in his chest, jongdae steps away from the windowsill and places the cup down onto the table, picking up his phone instead.
( he’d gotten it from one of his neighbors, mister ryeo, who’d been looking to just toss it after he’d dropped it in the ocean. it was a pretty new model, the exterior sleek and shiny, but completely useless after its little dip, waterlogged and beyond repair. when he’d asked him for it, jongdae had gotten a confused look, but the middle-aged man was willing. with light steps, he returned back home, the pads of his fingers continuously running against the smooth surface; soon after, the ruined phone was sitting in a pouch of uncooked rice, and he’d turned his attention away to preparing dinner.
jongdae shakes droplets of water from his wet dishes and towels them dry, setting them onto the dishrack. he becomes aware of a budding presence, an enigmatic sort of feeling settling at the base of his spine and tingling in his fingers, and steps away from his kitchen sink. he rids his hands of any moisture, rounding the corner and kneeling on the floor, scooting closer to the source of the ambience. he inhales, then exhales, quite breathily, and reaches out to the phone. his physical body is still, and his fingers are by his side, but there’s an inexplicable, invisible force that extend, almost like tendrils, that wrap around the small piece of technology.
“why, hello,” jongdae says, a smile quirking the corners of his lips upwards, and places his fingers onto it. he gently drags his digits down the screen, soft and warm, almost as if he was coaxing something alive; his mouth is unmoving, having been closed since he’d said his two simple words, but he’s connecting. talking. conversing, slow and steady. a telltale jolt tells him that a bond has been established, and he’s about to just start counting when he sees the screen light up, the white logo bold and sharp in a clear contrast to the darkness it had been displaying a moment before.
「ᴡᴇʟᴄᴏᴍᴇ ʙᴀᴄᴋ. sᴏʀʀʏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴅʀᴏᴡɴᴇᴅ, ʙᴜᴛ ʏᴏᴜ'ʀᴇ ᴏᴋᴀʏ ɴᴏᴡ. ɪ ᴘʀᴏᴍɪsᴇ. ᴡɪʟʟ ʏᴏᴜ ǫᴜɪᴛ ᴀʟʟ ᴘʀᴇᴠɪᴏᴜs ᴘʀᴏᴄᴇssᴇs ᴛʜᴀᴛ ᴍᴀʏ ʙᴇ sᴛɪʟʟ ᴀᴄᴛɪᴠᴇ ᴀɴᴅ ᴡɪᴘᴇ ᴀʟʟ ᴅᴀᴛᴀ?」
the phone does as he asks. he thanks it genuinely, his gratitude having been felt and accepted, and watches as it reboots. jongdae removes his fingers from its casing and leaves it on the table, allowing it to cool off and get used to the new installation process. he communicates with it for a little longer, though, and mentions to let him know when it became ten o'clock. afterwards, he brushes his teeth and washes his face and goes back into his small kitchen to brew some barley tea, so that he could enjoy it as he partook in his daily nighttime routine (gaze at the stars) before going to bed. )
「ᴛʜᴀᴛ’s ᴀɴ ᴀᴛʀᴏᴄɪᴏᴜs ᴀʟᴀʀᴍ,」he shakes his head as he places the phone back down, finished with his reminiscing, 「ᴄʜᴀɴɢᴇ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ᴛᴏ sᴏᴍᴇᴛʜɪɴɢ ᴇʟsᴇ, ᴡɪʟʟ ʏᴏᴜ?」
jongdae crawls into bed and pulls his covers all the way up to his chin, drawing invisible constellations in shades of pellucid paint on the canvas of his ceiling before falling asleep.
the hour hand of his manual cuckoo clock begins to point to four when jongdae hears slight rustling and stirring, but he doesn’t pay it much attention. still, though, he sleepily inquires through his technological bond if they had anything to do with it. the silence that greets him should be reassuring, but it seems to have the opposite effect as he snaps his eyes open, pupils trying to dilate to get used to the darkness.
he blinks momentarily, awaiting for an answer that doesn’t come, before realizing that he hadn’t said anything out loud. he clears his throat multiple times before verbalizing his words. “who is it?” it comes out hoarse, sleep-laden. so much for throat-clearing. jongdae feels a bit silly, still lying down with blown oculars, just waiting, but he also feels an odd sense of famililarity that keeps him from throwing himself into a panic.
