soooo yeah not very popular opinion but the apple is a top 5 spirk episode with Spock probably being the most ridiculous we've ever seen him on screen (standing in front of the same spores which had killed a crewman to save Jim from them) (justifying his actions by blaming it on his "clumsiness" *???*) (Jim scolding him but immediately going "thaaanks" in the dreamiest voice)

I... just finished reading the novelization of The Voyage Home and these are a couple of actual things that happen in the book:

1. when Spock refers to retrieving the whales as their 'mission', Jim honest-to-god berates him for not caring enough about humanity or Sarek's life

2. Spock and Bones share an "impression" of each other's minds, and it 'drives McCoy crazy to understand him so well'. Spock, in a very innocent moment, asks him if understanding him better is so terrible. He replies, smiling, that it is not terrible at all, but that he is afraid to lose himself.

3. Gillian Taylor, Jim and Bones fake a threesome inside a closet of the hospital where Chekov was having surgery to avoid being caught by policemen. yeah. not joking.

4. during the whole "Spock is going to have to guess for the first time" sequence, Jim clasps Spock's hand in reassurance and he receives his thoughts of surprise and joy through the touch.

5. Spock awaits the council's verdict locked up in the Vulcan embassy and McCoy actually storms it by saying "Let me in! Spock, damnit, if you won't take my calls I am staying on your front porch until you talk to me!"
