Yeah she actually nailed that. That EFO vs FPO explanation was so needed for me. It's actually really interesting that the EFO basically almost functions as a semi expansion-draft-pic in how you can't refuse it, but still manages to improve the player rights side of things where if multiple teams offer a player an EFO, they get to pick where they go. Whereas FPO is entirely optional for the player to accept or not.

Hello !!! About your primer post, i know you already had one about Jalen Hurts, and this isn't about hockey, but i'd really love an eagles primer (only if you want or have time!) . Im trying to get into the nfl for next season, and the flyers made me a Phillyboo this year so might as well get into the eagles too

this is an unofficial biased mildly unorganized philadelphia eagles/nfl primer!!

first, let me start by saying there's no way to actually "prime" on the history and influence and details of this organization. the eagles have technically been around since 1899. what's good though, is the nfl is such a wildly popular market that there are tons of content creators and so many resources.

informational youtube videos i recommend watching:

How The Philadelphia Eagles Became The NFL's Dynasty Killers: A Deep Dive (2.5 hours long, yep! highly rec if you're really interested in getting to know more about the organization not just recent success. i also like this creator, he makes a lot of these deep dive videos for other teams/players and if you watch the vid you'll see how much effort he puts into his content).

there's probably a million other videos i could recommend, but i really think the first one especially is a solid start in seeing what areas interest you specifically to look into more.

also, if you're completely new to the nfl i would recommend doing some reading/basic googling on the way the league is set up. it's not purely geography based like the nhl. there's two conferences of 16 (american football conference vs national football conference), and then divided into four groups of four (east, west, north, south). these geographic markers aren't really indicative though, like the dallas cowboys are in the nfc east, along with the eagles, the new york giants, and the washington commanders.. or the indianapolis colts are in the afc south with the jacksonville jaguars, houston texans, and tennessee titans. not sure if you're usamerican or not, but if you really get into the nfl you end up getting very very familiar with us geography and states lol.

and here's my piece on the eagles, not based on factual discussion or historical facts, just rambling on why i personally like them and thoughts on the nfl in general:

i think the nfl is a masterclass on how to maintain the balance of a sports league being 100% commercialized and 100% sport focused. the regular season has just 17 games, so each game feels very special, and the playoffs are do or die. now this is more because the sport itself is so much more grueling that even executives would not even fathom having football games played with just a day in between, but it's also had the effect of making each game "feel" more valuable, something that sets it apart from the massive number of games in the nba, mlb, and nhl. a majority of games are on sundays, which works perfectly with the average american work/play schedule: weekdays you have work, friday and saturday nights are for going out, and as the weekend winds down, maybe you're hungover maybe you're doing sunday cleaning, you turn on the tv for some football. it gives something to look forward to on usually a day that causes stress. there is also one monday night football game and thursday night football game. which again, i think works well with the adult working schedule because it gives little crumbs to look forward to on two rough days (mondays: self explanatory, thursdays: something to keep you going entering the weekend and so there isn't a massive gap before sunday). i think there's also upsides to the nba/nhl/mlb schedules in having frequent games, but the way the nfl is set up is that they've made it EASY for you to watch games, not have to plan an evening around watching them, and you're much less likely miss a game because there's so few.

another intriguing part of football to me is that it's truly the ultimate team sport, including the coaching staff. the way the game works means the best teams function like a well oiled machine with each part chugging along in tandem. but even one mishap from one player could make it all crash down. you can't have one player, or even two players drag the team into a good record, that's just not possible. football doesn't operate on the common sports main idea of "object into small space = score". this creates opportunities for plays and moments that are so uniquely electric. it's an uphill process to understand the game, but the more you learn and understand how to watch it, the more fun it gets. and some might use the large rosters, frequent stoppages, and few games as a knock against the sport but man, they just don't get it. it's such a cerebral sport it's such a grind it out sport it's such a uniting sport and it's such a fun sport to watch. and in my opinion, best way to learn is to just watch games and stick with it.

now, i hope this part doesn't come off as old man yelling at cloud, but also i think liking football and the nfl means, well, really coming to terms with what professional sports entails, even more so than hockey. i mean this in that in demographics that aren't stereotypically "into football" (ie not cis white male, usually), there is a simultaneous "scared perception" on football that i've come to observe. this also overlaps with some nhl fans that act weird about other sports leagues. sometimes it's because of unfamiliarity with the mindsets of professional athletes (see my drugs in sports post), sometimes it's racism, sometimes it's classism, sometimes it's just lobbing stereotypes back and forth to each other, and it's always a mix of everything. there's valid reason to be wary of american football, and as you get into more, you learn that the bad perceptions you hear are true. there are players that have committed crimes, really bad ones. there are organizations with crazy cover ups. it's not a good place, it's not a "moral" place. but what i'm trying to say is, to be a football fan is to understand these are parts of the league and parts of the entertainment you want to view, and take each instance as seriously as it deserves. you can't take a moral high ground with watching football, or any professional sports league. i will say, having gotten into the nhl, i do think the nfl, is more "progressive" perhaps because of the racial diversity, perhaps because football isn't super locked by financial background, perhaps because the nfl has such a wide reach. (notable examples include: al-shaair wearing "stop the genocide" on his face during a tv interview, jalen hurts refusing to answer if he's going to the white house, and just look up colin kaepernick if you don't know his story). again, this isn't me trying to win the "wokeness competition" between sports leagues, that's stupid. it's more than nfl players tend to show more personality and more of their personal views which can sometimes lead to upsides (and downsides, like saquon golfing with trump, nick bosa wearing a maga hat on tv, an endless list of literal crimes that players have gone to jail for). the truth is you're going to see much more politics and moral quandaries when engaging with nfl content, because they (aka the players, org, league) don't really hide it as much in either direction (like the nhl does), and can't really hide it as much since football players tend to be more famous in the us and will be more willing to investigate and drop news about them. this is all something every person rationalizes differently, and an idea you might have to roll around in your brain before diving in so you're not caught off guard.

congrats if you've made it down here, have a gift <- this website has every nfl game replay going back to 2020, and super bowls since 2000. i'd recommend watching the eagles superbowl wins (2017-18, 2024-25) as well as their respective nfc championships. godspeed!
