     THERE IS AN OLD MAN, LITHE & FRAIL, LAYS ‘PON SOFT SHEETS. His hand is clasped in that of another-- his partner, his lover. He has changed, over the years, since their first meeting, but they have never changed. The old man is unsure whether he is selfish to be happy about that fact, for he has aged just like any mortal would, coming closer & closer to his inevitable passing, giving them no choice but to simply watch as he fades away. They do no deserve to see him slip away like this, but if he knows his partner well enough, ( which he does, thank you very much ), they would have it no other way. 

          “ You are the best to ever happen to me. ” he whispers, gaze flickered to their form. “ I love you. ” he passes before he can hear their reply, eyes slipping shut for the final time. Destiny rouses, something akin to mourning settling in her heart.

          “ You’re insane. ” She whispers once she pulls away from the kiss she had pulled her lover into only a moment before, shaking her head. ‘She’ is a young, fiery, woman, eyes bright with an unstoppable fire & a taste for adventure. “ You’re absolutely insane. Yes, I’ll marry you, you silly thing. I love you so, so much. ” 

     She is killed once her father finds out of her plans to elope. She dies alone-- her lover’s name being the last thing that escapes from her parted lips. A lock of her hair is sent to the one she was running away to marry. A last gift, some said. A reminder, others. The remainder say that it is Destiny that chose to have the woman’s father mauled by wolves the following summer.

     A well aimed slice to the stomach, red soaking into muddied clothes & slipping between pale fingers. They bleed out & they know nothing more. Their life cut short, fighting a war that they wanted no part in. Destiny screeches her fury & she sends storm clouds to wash away the blood just in time for a dark figure to find the body. Neither being had ever met each other, but Destiny wails ring, paired with the wind, all the same.

          “ I love you ! ” The child beams up at her friend, holding tightly onto their hand despite the sickness the crawls through her veins. “ You promise you’ll take me to the candy store when I’m better ? ” The child does not live to see the sun rise, the sickness claiming her during the night. Destiny would scream & curse at the universe if she could. The rain does not cease for weeks after that.

     Something rolls between their feet, coming to a gentle stop against his foot. It takes him exactly one second to process what it is, but it is already too late. 

          “ Cha-- ” The blast from the grenade kills him instantly. His partner comes to to his splattered remains. Destiny is quiet, this time.

          “ Look out ! ” He is moving before he can even second guess his stupid, stupid decision. They are pushed out of the way, the shot aimed for their head instead lodging itself in his lungs. He is going to die here, Destiny knows this ( as is his fate ), but she feels sadness & remorse all the same. He is clutching onto the front of his lover’s shirt, choking & gasping as blood fills his mouth & drips down his cheeks-- his chin, staining beautiful, unblemished skin.           “ I lo-- I lo--ve... I l-- ! ” He dies. Destiny screams-- but she is drowned out by the sound of gunfire.

     Destiny mourns.

There is a young boy, his blue eyes once glittering with childish mischief & youth, dimmed with horrors that no boy should ever experience at a young age. He is covered in soot & ash, his olive skin stained black & nails chipped from where he had frantically clawed at the rubble to no avail. He should have died in that fire-- & the part that has him questioning why is ignored by the part that very much wishes he did.       The boy is no longer a boy, but a young man. His body has been scarred again. He should have died when those monsters tied him to the chair.      The young man should have died when he is locked in a room to be forgotten.       The man should have died once his head is separated from his body-- but his screams still echo loud & clear, accompanied by maniacal laughter.      The man finally dies when he is stabbed in the heart with a scalpel drenched in his own blood. Destiny weeps.

     The man opens his eyes & her cries still. There is hope, still.

          “ I love you. ” The man says. But he is not simply ‘the man’. He was a boy who should have died in the fire. He was a soldier who took a bullet to save the one he loved. He is the one who perished from a grenade rolling between his feet. He is a young girl, holding onto the hand of her best friend in her final moments as she slips away. He is a man bleeding out in the mud, with a heart that yearned for more. He is a young woman with fire in her eyes that has her lover’s name be the last word to pass her lips as her final breath. He is an old man, lithe & frail, laying ‘pon soft sheets. He has been more. But now, he is Enzo. He is who he wishes to be & there is nothing more that he would rather be than the man who loved the same soul since his own was put on the Earth. 

          “ I love you, amore mio. And I know that if I were anyone else, I would still love you all the same. ” Destiny smiles ‘pon the two souls that had been separated for far too long.

WHAT TRAGIC HORROR CHARACTER TROPE ARE YOU?

BLU:

the harbinger -- the harbingers have been through fire. you've got the scars to show for it. some people say harbingers are jaded- scary, even, to people who don't understand that the harbinger has seen the edge of the world and survived it. but being the harbinger means you're cursed to watch younger, brighter eyes fall for the same traps you did. trying to help isn't enough for you; you know what they're getting themselves into, and you want to protect them the way no one ever protected you, so why won't they just listen? it's frustrating. it's terrifying. no one should have to live through what you did, and i hope you know that you can't protect everyone but it's damn noble of you to try. it's not your job to save the world but i hope you know you've already made a difference to everyone who has taken your words to heart.

RED: 

that which cannot be known -- oh god. how did it come to this? to some extent, you've gone so far past your own idea of "human" that it must be kind of fun, right? maybe. i'm not sure. as an artefact of cosmic horror, you're wild and wacky and colourful and people are probably drawn to that, but you will never let them know you. the mystery intrigues for a while, but it'll wear everyone down. it'll wear you down, too. who are you? do you remember? are you so far gone that you can't go back? and maybe that's the most tragic thing of all- becoming so distorted in your identity, and for so long, that no matter how hard you want to return you can't ever seem to figure it out. but you've learned a vast amount up in the stars, and people will work hard to get to know you. it doesn't matter who you used to be. sometimes, you should just start from scratch: give yourself a name, a birthday. let someone celebrate these things with you.

the ghost -- it's an odd thing, to feel so far from grounded and yet trapped, tethered, unable to escape. there's more you have to do! so why can't you move? i'm sure you have an answer to that, at the very least in the back of your mind. people love to say that ghosts hold grudges or haunt for revenge but they always get it wrong; you're stuck because something or someone chained you down and left you there. you try and reach out to all those bright people who pass through your life, but it rarely feels like it does much more than knock a cup off the table, blow some papers into the air. i need you to trust me- they see it. they're listening. they'll keep looking for you and, eventually, they'll be able to see you too.

     ONE ALMOST NEVER KNOWS HOW MUCH THEY NEED SOMETHING UNTIL THEY RECIEVE IT. Enzo was used to touch-- the touch of battle, the harshness of a fist meeting jaw, a hand clenched around his throat ( tightening-- choking, can’t breathe, can’t breathe, can’t-- ), his own knuckles meeting the flesh of another. The touch of another outside of that ( the intention to comfort, to soothe-- not to maim or hurt ) was rare, a luxury for one of his occupation. He cannot pinpoint the exact time that he had last felt a friendly pat on his shoulder, a hand being held in his-- a hug, however, is a far distant memory from a life that he was no longer allowed to call his own. 

     Of course it is someone like Mutt who found the need to be the one to break the Spy’s ongoing streak. Arms wrapping around him ( thrash-- escape, get away ! ), tightening around his body and pulling it towards another. Years of honed instinct are silenced once Enzo’s brain registers that he is not under threat, he is being held-- hugged. He is being given affection-- he is being given it freely ( or rather forcefully in this case, but the details were minor ). He can’t let his guard down so easily-- he shouldn’t let his guard down. But Mutt is warm, their embrace is... safe. 

     The mercenary allows himself a brief indulgent here, his own arms coming to wrap around the other in order to return the hold. The difference in height makes it slightly more challenging, but his face meets the meat of Mutt’s shoulder regardless, burrowing deep, almost as if he buries himself deep enough, the world around him may just melt away. He is only human, after all, & it is important that he was reminded of that fact.

     SHOULDERS SLUMPED & WEARY FROM SEEMINGLY HOLDING UP THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD. Long & arduous hours Pasha had slaved away over his desk, paperwork stacking high towards the ceiling, never-ending & almost a permanent fixture. The sun had set, only to rise & set once more ( this will be the last one-- and then he may go to bed. just one more and then he may rest his head ). The Medic was stubborn-- that much was as obvious as it was true. He hated leaving anything half finished, instead opting to forcing himself to complete a task laid before him before all else ( when was the last time that he had slept ? had a break ? eaten ? ). He should stop-- he knows he should stop.

     The cramp in his hand from writing had long since become a familiar, returning friend-- the throbbing in his back a persistent reminder that he was no longer a young University student, frantically trying to study before his final tests the next day. He was not studying for his degree anymore, he was a mercenary. He was a man who healed a group comprised of mostly idiots ( himself, his brother, & the BLU Spy being the exception ) that fought over a patch of desert that very few people in the outside world likely had the knowledge of. Why was he even trying so hard ?  ( -- alert ! The enemy has taken our intelligence. -- alert ! Our control point is being captured ! ) 

     A groan, the younger twin’s palm finding his face, fingers slipping underneath his glasses to rub at his eyes. Once the blurriness fades from his vision, the remainder of his work comes into view. Perhaps he can get away with finishing off part of Alyosha’s pile too ? It never failed to make his heart warm, watching as his older brother perk up in the morning’s when he sees that his workload is seemingly less than the night prior. 

                                            -- speak of the devil & he shall appear. With a sad look in his eyes, but a patience with one who was used to the younger’s bouts of fixations. 

     Pasha looks towards his twin-- his dear brother, standing there with his arms wordlessly held open-- and something inside of him crumbles. How many times had Alyosha had to bear witness to Pasha’s relentless stubbornness ? His inflexible & ornery attitude-- watching his younger twin as he would debate with himself ( one more, just the one more ), push his body to his limits for the sake of completion. 

     Pride be damned. The sound of the chair screeching against the floor makes Pasha wince but he moves to stand, swaying in place for a moment ( or perhaps longer ), then stabilising himself. One step. Two step-- & then he’s walking towards Alyosha, sighing & feeling his exhaustion hit him full force. He leans into his brother’s awaiting arms, returning the embrace with his own, hands holding onto the back of Alyosha’s shirt.

          He could rest. Just for a few minutes. Just this once.
