Mocha Reviews • Writing Apps
Platform: iPad
I'm just documenting some writing apps I found. There are no ratings, just opinions. All opinions are completely subjective and I am not trying to make this professional or actually useful. But maybe you'll find something cool for yourself here :3
Stars in the heading mean I like it a lot and use it every day!
• Notes | Free [🌟]
Good old reliable.
Link to app. But I am sure you already have it on your iPad.
Price — Free, built-in.
Form — The light theme is reminiscent of Discord’s light mode (derogatory). I dislike the default yellow accents and wish there is a way to change the color into something nicer for the eyes.
Function — You can do a lot, the features are top-notch for a default notes app. It has all the basics features a writing app should have but you can also draw, scan documents, encrypt your notes with a password, add tables, search handwriting/scanned documents, add tags, access quick notes in other apps with just a simple gesture, pin notes, etc. You can view the full feature list in the store page and experience the coolness yourself in the app.
Does it collect your data? — To my horror, it does. Just a teeny bit. Your identifiers and user content (whatever that is) get harvested and the data is linked to you. But they also harvest usage data, not linked to you.
Dark mode? — Superior.
How spicy? — Kinda bland, but nutritious.
I think it's a must-have. Simple but powerful, only lacking in spiciness and the inability to change the default yellow accents... And maybe they should harvest our data LESS???????
• Notion | Freemium [🌟]
You CAN NOT do a writing apps review collection without including the one and only Notion <3
Link to app.
Price — Freemium. Check the pricing plans here!
Form — Both the dark and light mode is pretty. Good and sleek UI design, has a cover, can add icons, and so more! I personally don't have any complaints about how it looks. You can customize your writing a lot too and I love that.
Function — When it comes to function in clean, organized note-taking, Notion has my heart! There is SOOOO many useful and neat features to the point that I'm sure you can even make a proper wiki out of it (I recommend it only for small-scale wikis, though. You should use something like Miraheze if you want to make bigger one's). Here's some features I particularly love: callout/boxes, page in page, table of contents, COLLUMNS, header dropdown toggle, database that can have tags and filters, create a template, embedding/bookmarking, web share, and so on. It can sometimes be too much or confusing but when you get a hang of it, you really get a hang of it.
Does it collect your data? — Yeah, read the store page.
Dark mode? — VERY GOOD!!!
How spicy? — Japanese curry and carrot and potatoes cooked by mom on a cozy rainy day.
I love you Notion please don't limit blocks and pages again <3
• Obsidian | Freemium
Don't get me started.
Link to app.
Honestly, just try it for yourself (it's a lot). Just know that it uses Markdown, freemium (you only need to subscribe to sync your notes or publish to the web but you can both of those without paying anyways so it's practically free), and SUPER CUSTOMIZABLE.
• Writing Space | Freemium
Looks simple at first but is actually quite powerful, especially if you are writing novels/scripts!
Link to app.
Price — Freemium. Need to subscribe for unlimited books, chapters, and to save as PDF/share/publish.
Form — Simple, straightforward, and pretty! Highly customizable, too.
Function — The organized library and chapters view is what I love the most about it. The formatting is easy and wonderful to use, too. It's very smooth and sleek, gives you all the essentials. No important feature is locked behind a subscription other than the ability to save to PDF/share <///3
Does it collect your data? — A little bit! Check the store page.
Dark mode? — YES!!!
How spicy? — Mildly spicy tuna mayo sandwich with a cold cup of latte on the side.
I tried this one out of curiosity but ended up actually going wow at it??? Like??? HELL YEAH??? Got a little disappointed when I see the subscription service though. However, it's not that expensive so I'll consider it when I need to write a book with many chapters in it!
• Paper | Freemium
Notes but simpler I guess.
Link to app.
Price — Freemium. Customization, certain view modes, and other small features are locked behind a subscription/lifetime purchase.
Form — Somehow simpler than Notes but prettier.
Function — It can write in both plain text and Markdown. What I like the most is the ability to navigate your text with arrows. You can sync with iCloud and publish to various writing platforms like Medium. Other than that, I don't have much to say, simply refer to the attached images!
Does it collect your data? — Yes but it collects less data than Notes do.
Dark mode? — Eyyup!
How spicy? — Tea with a pinch of ginger.
Kinda mid for me but maybe it'll be nice for someone else!
• Craft | Freemium [🌟]
I actually intended this spot for Noto but it was so similar to Craft (superior docs app) so I decided to put Craft instead <3
Link to app.
Price — Freemium. Check their pricing plans here!
Form
Unlike Notion, Craft actually limits your blocks (for now).
• Minimal | Freemium
This one in particular feels somewhat ~zen~ to use. I like it!
Link to app.
Price — Freemium.
Another concept for a SLARPG OC! Behold (2)! Cinnamon Sunrise! I am well aware of the MLP-esque name, it is completely intentional. She is Moxie MiWadi’s girlfriend, and sometimes her uh car. 🚗
Cinnamon is a saloon manager at Mumford. Well… Uhh… Calling it a saloon would be an understatement. It’s actually a 10-feet-tall cutboard cutout of a saloon front with a square hole in the middle of it food-truck-style. Behind the cutout is no other than a magical vending machine and a simple pop-up kitchen. She’s the only employee there. Business is slow due to the saloon being set up in Mumford. Her only customers would be passing adventurers and no other than her girlfriend, Moxie MiWadi. They can’t properly digest her food and drinks, though.
On occasions, she would close shop and stock up on food ingredients, venturing beyond the Celestial Wastelands with her pardner.
EDIT: I colored her :3 Original sketch before edit here!
