My 9th grade English teacher described pulp fiction books as “brain twinkies”- really good morsels of literature that aren’t very complex or filling but are delicious to read. Fanfiction and YA books are brain twinkies. They’re good to read in small doses, but they should by no means make up a large portion of your reading diet, lest you become bloated and full of simplistic ideas and lose your ability or desire to consume complex pieces. A lot of the people in the notes remind me of those obese people who don’t see anything wrong w their lifestyle of eating nothing but junk food, and insist that other people need to change their perception instead of acknowledging that they’ve got absolutely no drive to consume nourishing and healthy meals. They have no idea how to consume complex, controversial, thought-provoking, or abstract literature. They only know how to read fanfiction, and it’s variants thereof.
I’m a huge fanfiction reader, so I’m not saying you should stop, but I also balance my diet by reading classics and standard published fiction, and the difference is like night and day. You don’t have to reject one to enjoy and consume the other, but balancing your reading habits is immensely important.
