i love my emotional support mid-aughts bands that haven’t really put out much of anything new but the albums they put out 15+ years ago are still in such heavy rotation because they are GENIUS
i feel like i luv them because their lyrics are completely opaque and foreign and yet you kind of know exactly what it’s about
tokyo police club included in this btw

The zuihitsu is a classic genre of Japanese literature that emerged sometime in the Heian Period (794-1185 AD), first seen in Sei Shonagon’s The Pillow Book. The word zuihitsu, which is made up of the kanji for “to follow” and “brush,” is usually translated as “following the brush” or “random jottings.” As such, the zuihitsu generally consists of a series of loosely connected, fragmented essays, ideas, word pictures, and poems.
this year I wrote my own zuihitsu following the “postmodern” model of kimiko hahn’s book the narrow road to the interior and I think it’s one of my favorite pieces from the semester
ten years later my friend sends me this screenshot of a convo with her dad she just had 🥲 i was like where did i hear this before
