… Someone needs to take HP away from JKR the same way they took away Star Wars from George Lucas.
She’s a detriment to her own franchise.
It's sad, but I am starting to feel the same way...
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is now part of HP canon
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child looks so good!!
My Hp review has 400+ notes!
I don't think anything I've ever done on tumblr has ever gotten even close to this! This is amazing! Thanks for all the love! My reviews blog is @sarahreviews check it out!
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Review (SPOILERS)
I am a HUGE Harry Potter Fan. And that might even be a bit of an understatement. I first picked up the series in Elementary School and they literally have changed my life. So many friendships started and strengthened by a shared love of Harry.
When it was announced that there was going to be an eighth story, a play, I was excited. Then it was announced that it would be published and I was thrilled. I pre-ordered, I made plans to be at the midnight release. I remained spoiler free, refusing to read reviews of the play or to read any of the leaks that made their way into the Internet. I wanted this to be pure. HP is like a close friend and I didn’t want anything to ruin this experience for me.
I just finished Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. It took me less than 3 hours to read through it, and to be honest, I wish that I hadn’t read it at all.
My first thoughts as I read the book were “I can’t believe I’m reading a NEW Harry Potter book!” Within the first few scenes my thoughts changed to “I can’t believe I’m reading a new HARRY POTTER book.” To be honest, I’ve read fan fiction that held truer to the original books and characters than Cursed Child. I’ve read BAD fan fiction that was more accurate than Cursed Child.
This book, to me, read like JK Rowling had taken every bad fan fiction troupe and threw it all together. Time travel? Really?? That is the most used deus ex machina in fan fiction. To have some one go back to the past and completely screw things up? Been there. Done that. Voldemort having a child? With Bellatrix Lestrange of all people? Honestly, not surprised. Dead characters miraculously revived by a butterfly effect? Seen that fan service before.
The fan fiction vibe is really just the tip of the iceberg here. Albus kissing his Aunt while disguised as her husband? Was that really necessary? How did that further the plot? Scorpious and Rose becoming an echo of James and Lily? Why?
While there are parts of the book I was pleased with (Hermione as MOM, Ron and Hermione still being happily together, Ginny being sarcastic and witty like book Ginny) there are far more instances of characters feeling out of character than in. While a lax student, Harry doesn’t strike me as someone who would shirk the responsibilities of being Head Auror. Professor McGonagal and Ginny were very quick to pass judgement and place blame. Ron told awful Dad jokes and really served no purpose other than comic relief (which is a true injustice, but that would require a whole other post to truly get into).
I am very disappointed with Cursed Child, and I am perplexed as to how JKR could have had anything to do with this mess. She treated the original series like those books, like those characters were her children, and I can’t believe what she has done to them now. I wish that I had never read this book, not because it was that bad, but because I fear that this will forever alter my perception of a woman and a series that shaped my childhood. Was this story just cranked out to generate revenue? What can we expect form Fantastic Beasts? Will those characters and plot lines be treated as loosely as these, or was it just a struggle to return to old characters?
I think I might pull a wand on myself and obliviate this from my cannon. 8th Harry Potter story? What 8th Harry Potter Story?
Cursed Child Opinion
This reads like a bad fan fiction to me and that breaks my heart. I’m only about 50 pages in, but still, disappointed.
TMNT: Out of the Shadows Review
Had a chance to and see an early screening of Teenage Muntant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows tonight, so here are my thoughts.
I was raised on the TMNT movies from the 90s. They are awful, but I love them. I never got into the tv show, and to be honest when the Michael Bay reboot came out I had zero desire to see it. He is not one of my favorite directors and Megan Fox as April was all kinds of wrong in my opinion. It wasn’t until recently that I even watched the new one, and I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. While not blow my socks off good, it was enjoyable and I laughed a fare bit. That being said, I watched it on Amazon Prime and didn’t actually pay to see it.
When the opportunity came to see the newest TMNT movie, I decided to take my brother so we could geek out together. We both left the theatre a little disappointed. It was overall enjoyable, and we did laugh a bit, but other than that it felt like any other generic, b-cut action film.
I did think that high points of the film, and that they managed to maintain the characters personalities well, even when it got a little campy, and I was surprised at the quality of the graphics (we saw the movie in 3D). The characters were still the same that I knew and loved, and it never hurts to add Stephen Amell to anything (in my opinion).
At the same time the plot was vastly unoriginal, and is the same generic plot of almost any team action movie (Avengers is the top one to come to mind). There was never any surprise or anything to get me to the edge of my seat, and I felt like every big moment in the movie could be predicted from a mile away. Now, it is possible that I am expecting too much from what many will consider a kids movie, but since the movie carried a PG-13 rating, I expected the movie to have a little more depth to it.
Overall, I did enjoy it, just not as much as I was hoping to.
3/5 stars with a recommendation to wait to watch it on cable.
Positives:
-Stephen Amell
-Funny moments
-Pop culture references
-Good Soundtrack
-Nods to long time fans of the series
Negatives:
-Unoriginal
-Predictable
Here are my thoughts on the new TMNT film
This is how I shall be dealing with this whole Hydra situation. #HeadcannonAccepted
Captain America: Civil War Review
I just saw an advanced screening of Captain America: Civil War, and I am still trying to collect my thoughts. Let me just say right away that this might have been my favorite Marvel movie yet. I was apprehensive about the film going in, there were more characters involved than ever before, there was a lot of new characters to introduce, and there was a lot of story to see rise, climax, and fall all in the time restraints of one movie. That being said, I think they did wonderfully. Let's break this down. Avengers: The movie starts with a great scene showing the training that has obviously taken place between AOU and CACW, and for the most part the team seems to gel together quite well. Each member is dealing with their own personal trauma and grief, however, and that will serve as a catalyst to tear them apart. While this is a Captain America movie and not an Avengers flick, each member of the team gets a share of the screen time, and more than a few good, quotable lines. There are some moments that seemed a little forced, and a few characters that I feel have not yet been fleshed out for their full potential, and that mostly falls to the two newest members of the team, Wanda and Vision. The two have some great moments, but I hope that this is not the best we see from them when both characters have potential for so much character growth. New Characters to the team(s): Black Panther, never-before-seen Spider-Man, and Ant Man. I was going into this movie with very little expectations for Black Panther and Spider-Man. I didn't know much about Black Panther, and I was starting to get tired of Spider-Man, so It really caught me off guard how well done and developed these characters were. With so much else going on in this film, there was still a chance for you to get to know both of these characters and get invested in their part of the narrative as well. Antman we see less of, backstory wise, most likely due to his previous movie, but there are still some twists to the story since we last left him with Hank Pym. Some may argue that Agent 13 (Sharon Carter) should be included here, but we see disappointedly little of her in the over all story arc of the film, so I don't consider her as truly a part of the team. A whole lot of story going on: I am still amazed by the amount of story that fit into one movie. The whole time I was anxiously waiting for a scene or two from the trailer that I hadn't seen yet, and thought for sure that they would not have enough time to do those scenes properly. They proved me wrong at almost every turn, and even the scenes that I thought I knew, they managed to still catch me by surprise. There were only a few scenes that I wished they had expanded on a little more, but unfortunately the ending was one of those scenes. I don't want to give anything away, so I'll just say that I wish they had resolved the conflict in a different way than they had, as the ending left a lot still up in the air. Overall, I loved the movie and felt that they managed to do justice to the team(s). The action was perfectly done, and the fight choreography was amazing to watch. It was also refreshing to see some new tech and toys for the team, especially for fans of the comics. Would recommend 5/5!
Today I asked out Molly Hooper because I forgot my pants.
I went on a date with Greg Lestrade because that is my division.
