Carol was probably miserable and lonely and just writing the most indulgent lesbian romance fantasy to cheer herself up; hogging a booth in a cafe only paying for coffee. She maybe didn't even intend for anyone to see it, but eventually she was sitting on a novel length book and figured she should do something with it. Then she finally saved up enough for that laptop, turned her into a he while transcribing it, and made a million dollars. Yet she remembers that cafe as the happiest time because she was escaping into her own fantasy - she didn't have to make it for other people, it was for herself. When it was successful it was no longer truly for herself, and I think that's part of why she started to resent it.
