MAKE EVERY SPACE A SAFE SPACE

So much public space in this world isn’t friendly for a big part of the population. In some places you have to act differently to avoid the discrimination, the danger, or even not going there at all. This space can be so unwelcoming  that you need sometimes to create your own space with your own people where you feel safe. The public space is supposed to be for everyone but how could it be when it is vector of such fear.

So, when you have the power to make it safer (in your street, on your workplace, in your city,etc..), please do it.

Journalist and artist Shirin Barghi has created a gripping, thought-provoking series of graphics that not only examines racial prejudice in today’s America, but also captures the sense of humanity that often gets lost in news coverage. Titled “Last Words,” the graphics illustrate the last recorded words by Brown and other young black people — Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant and others — who have been killed by police in recent years.

An open letter to the people who think they know me:

Hi!

First, fuck you.

Second, I love you.

Third, I’ll explain.

Now, for those who think they know me - you don’t. You simply know the version of me you made. I am not who you perceive me to be. Now, some of you know me better than others. That’s fine. I don’t expect you all to know everything about me- heck - I don’t want you all to know everything about me. That’s creepy, really creepy; like ultimate stalker levels of creepiness and that’s just creepy. Past that, I hate all of you. Every last one of you. I hate you all because you all think you know who I am and like I said before, you don’t. You fabricate and conjure up a version of me that you want to believe in - not who I am. You tell me things saying that it’s for the best, you do things saying that it’s for the best, you point me in a direction saying it’s for the best, you control me saying it’s for the best. Best for who? Best for you? Best for the version of me you think I am? Certainly not for the actual me. I am more complex than you think I am, I am more feeling than you think I am, I am more intelligent than you think I am, I am more calculating than you think I am, I am more forgiving than you think I am, I am more human than you think I am.

I am, simply put, more.

More than you could even imagine.

Now, I told you that I loved you didn’t I? I guess I better explain that after having gone on a rant about all the things you do. The reason why I love you is because you push me to be more. You are the ones who enable me to be more. I don’t want to be the faceless child you imagine me to be. I am more and you are the reason why. Without you I might have become one of the faceless children to which you place a name tag and send them on their way. You are the reason I am more. Thank you.

So, all in all, you probably have no idea what to do with this information. Keep it in the back of your mind the next time you see me - or anyone really. Think to look deeper. People are more complex and intricate than they may seem to be at first glance. Take the time to get to know people and all the reasons why they do the things they do. Love them for who they truly are - not the person you think they are.

She keeps me warm...

The golden light emanating from between the window slats create a striped halo surrounding her frame. Her eyes are closed and her face is as calm as she continues in her slumber. Her eyes are closed and calm, her brow slack. Her chest moves slow, languid as she breathes in and out, in and out, in and out. Her lips are soft and supple. Chunks of her short, cropped hair block out parts of her face and create a Picasso of a woman. Her right hand is tucked under her pillow but her left is entwined with mine. The blanket is was draped softly over her form, now left shoved to her waist. Her whole being emanates warmth, love and care. I cannot fathom what my life would be without her. She keeps me warm with her will, her love, her care, her life.

I love her. I cannot make her love me, I can only provide her with the opportunity to love me back.
