ok but nels and anders 👀
i didn't forget them shut up >:(
Nels - Yes if you're counting strictly living people. Yesn't if you're also including the undead.
Anders - Yes. Many times, some not of his own free will.
dumb shortform list idea: the "have they killed a man" edition
Jayce - Let's not talk about it.
Soap - Many times. It's literally his job.
Laswell - Many times. Local old lesbian still knows how to break a man's jugular.
C.onstantine - Directly, indirectly, accidental, purposely....
Gemma - technically yes
Xanthe - Yes? No? Does it count if they were already dead?
The Doctor - Yes. Billions.
Rogue - Sometimes it's in the job description.
Nels - Yes if you're counting strictly living people. Yesn't if you're also including the undead.
Anders - Yes. Many times, some not of his own free will.
V.erso - It was self defense.
M.acCready - Yes. Rules of surviving in the Wasteland.
TF - Yes. You don't survive B.ilgewater without getting dirty.
Bobbi - Yes and she'd do it again.
Manny - There's a reason he says human tastes like shit.
Alex - The body count was double digits by age 12.
Kris - Yes. Demons get bored.
Sebastian - Once. It was an accident.
Jimmy - Nope. There would be problems if the intrusive thoughts won.
Jack - Nope. By some actual miracle.
Santos - Nope.
Shaw - Yes. Both directly and indirectly. It comes with the job.
* ― IT WASN’T A PHASE, MOM ! ( PART TWO. )
a collection of lyrics taken from my mostly myspace era nostalgia playlist. this one goes out to all the former emo kids. some triggering content may appear. as always, feel free to change and adjust anything as needed.
“ things happen but we don’t really know why. “
“ all these things i hate revolve around me. “
“ why can’t you just be straight up with honesty? “
“ i’m coming home. i’ve been gone for far too long. “
“ have i fucked things up again? “
“ my bed’s so cold and lonely. “
“ you’ve got me shaking from the way you’re talking. “
“ if i had common sense, i’d cut myself or curl up and die. “
“ if this is love, i don’t wanna be loved. “
“ if i could be the devil, you can be the sinner. “
“ you could be the drugs and i could be the dealer. “
“ everything you say is like music to my ears. “
“ i’ve got you under a spell and i don’t think i’ll be letting you out. “
“ if this is heaven, then baby i don’t wanna know hell. “
“ i could’a went to college like rich kids do. “
“ in rock n’ roll, i got a phd. “
“ we got all that we need, packed it up in the van. “
“ i ain’t got shit, but i got this far. “
“ it’s probably better we’re not together. “
“ we were so young and invincible. “
“ young love was such dumb love. “
“ our first kiss stole the breath from my lips, why did the last one tear us apart? “
“ we were just kids in love. “
“ you won’t try to save me. you just want to hurt me and leave me desperate. “
“ you taught my heart a sense i never knew i had. “
“ i bet you believe that i’m better off with you than someone else. “
“ i’m not your boyfriend, baby. “
“ i’m not your knight in shining armor. “
“ l-o-v-e’s just another word i never learned to pronounce. “
“ how do i say i’m sorry? ‘cause the word is never gonna come out. “
“ i’m so bored, your words aren’t making sense. “
“ one more drink and i’m convinced. “
“ it’s been hell not having you here. “
“ i’ve been missing you so bad and you don’t seem to care. “
“ i bet you’ve never had a friday night like this. “
“ i don’t want this anymore. the thought of you is no fucking fun. “
“ i’m tired of begging for the things that i want. “
“ if i leave, i’m alone. but what’s the difference when you beg for love? “
“ we fell in love and now we’re both alone. “
“ i know it’s hard, but who are you to fall apart on me? “
“ i still think you’re beautiful. “
“ i don’t ever wanna lose my best friend. “
“ i really hope you enjoy the show. “
“ hotels are cheap and there’s one down the street. “
“ i’m sorry, i can’t see that you truly love me. “
“ i don’t care if you’re sick, i don’t care if you’re contagious. i would kiss you even if you were dead. “
“ did you call me last night just ‘cause you couldn’t get laid? “
“ you’ve got me right where you want me. “
“ i know i’m a bastard, but i’m not a coward. “
“ why can’t you see what you’re doing to me? “
“ don’t worry, i’ve let you go long before you left me. “
“ nothing compares to a quiet evening alone. “
“ let’s be more than this. “
“ you wear your heart on your sleeve, i threw mine to the sky. “
“ when you use your lips, they better be on me. “
“ liars turn me on. “
“ it’s only a crime if i get caught. “
“ i can’t keep sleeping in your bed if you keep messing with my head. “
“ i can’t keep touching you like this if it’s just temporary bliss. “
“ don’t even talk about the consequences, ‘cause right now you’re the only thing that’s making any sense to me. “
“ i don’t give a damn what they say or what they think, ‘cause you’re the only one who’s on my mind. “
“ will you be mine tonight? “
“ i thought you knew that i was crazy. “
“ who the fuck do you think you are? “
“ i can never be a perfect fucking image of what you want. “
“ we’re dancing with the devil. he’ll drink you under the table. “
“ do you still want me? “
“ i won’t be angry if you have to leave. but i won’t be waiting. “
“ don’t say you’re sorry because i won’t believe you. “
“ i’ve tried so hard to be what you needed. “
“ i’ve tried for so long to make you believe that i’m not the enemy. “
“ i never wanted a partner and i never loved you. “
“ i never wanted a partner and i never loved you, so now you’re free to leave. “
“ i swear to you now, i won’t call. “
“ congratulations. go home now. “
“ stop talking to me. i haven’t been listening. “
“ music is dead thanks to you cunts. “
“ my only home is the bottom of a bottle and a rolled up bill. “
“ i am rock and roll at it’s fucking finest. “
“ self destruction is such a pretty little thing. “
“ don’t bother sleeping without one eye open wide. “
Jesus.
He had assumed it was recent, just from first glance, but he didn’t realize it was that recent. How the hell had he not noticed? Maybe because it wasn’t too bad of a wound, if he hadn’t been dragging his lips across Jack’s skin he might have not noticed at all.
Robby drags his lips over it again, softer and slower this time. One of these days, that job is going to land Jack in the hospital with an life threatening injury. Robby dreads that day, hopes he never sees it, but knows the likelihood of it is very high.
He tries not to think about that and instead focuses on Jack and pressing his lips to his other shoulder.
“I mean -” Robby’s cut off by Jack pressing his lips to his own in a proper kiss, earning a pleased hum into Jack’s mouth. When they part, he finishes his thought. “Unless you really want to go to the store?” He could spend hours trying to find the scars on Jack’s body, pretending like he doesn’t know where some of them are, kissing each and every one.
"I'm sure I can find them. I'm good at that."
“Store’ll be there tomorrow. And it’s a bit rude to interrupt someone when they’re clearly onto something.” Was it healthy to skip out and hit up some takeout for dinner later? Again? Probably, yeah, but call Jack sentimental for the way he was in Robby’s current line of attention.
The fact that it actually felt nice having said attention on some of the more rotten bits? Happy coincidence, clearly.
“It’s not as bad as you’d think. Feels more like... mm... A burn I s’pose. Then again pain tolerance has always been high.” Jack thought for a moment before shrugging. Intently, moving himself a bit more to the side to let Robby have whatever access he really felt like having. Yeah, who the hell really needed fresh lettuce that badly anyways?
“Got an older, matching one a bit lower on my waist.” He paused again, swallowing shortly. “Kid who didn’t know any English and scared outta his mind versus guy who barely speaks enough Arabic t’ ask about the toilet trying to help his mom. You can probably fill in the blanks.”
loathe though she was to admit it, Celia was interested - yet her eyes rolled, head shaking slightly as she quietly laughed. still, no interruption came, and she watched their explanation with a slightly arched brow.
"like echoes, then - but unbound to space as it is now." it made about as much sense as most magic she had learned about - confusing and intangible, often beyond the reach of her own abilities. while Celia could reach out to grasp the essence of the physical, magic bound to tissue and blood, long practice had left her out of touch with most else.
"and the similarity to vessel tending is in those echoes?"
“Because the vessels give the habits form, depending on how tangibly here the spirit is. The more tied they are to the memories, the more likely the vessel will try to mimic the habits in the memories. I ah... kind of saw it happen with a grave robber who had succumbed to the crypt and was being prepped for his new role as a skeleton miner.”
Said like it was the most normal thing ever and not at all macabre that the necromancers of Nevarra were apparently sentencing grave robbers to eternal labor. In hindsight, there was probably a lot that would seem even stranger...
“Before you ask the inevitable: yes, it’s the memories of the dearly departed that are viewed and not the actual person themselves. Forcing someone to continue existing after they’re long gone is... wrong, to say the least. Spirits help in that sense, being able to show something that provides comfort in those trying times."
Far from ridiculous. This was a magnificent creation in the eyes of Jingyan, Of course it would make sense that Verso had started this as a kid, it was like the essence of childhood joy put into tangible form. The giant swirly lollipops that most kids would have begged their mama and papa for decorated a cavern she could see from a distance, safe and inviting. Creatures made of candy and icing wandered the land, walking along candied flowers and sunflowers with Esquie's face on them. An escape from the trenches of life, it felt like she could finally breathe.
They were very pleased to now know that (at least) some of the treats here were edible, they popped that gifted lolly into her mouth humming happily from the taste.
"You need help coming up with some concepts?" She asked with a knowing grin. "I think I might have a few ideas in mind..."
“Of course--though you’d have to mind the gestral prototypes running about in here. They’re less like the modeled adult dog personality on the outside and more like puppies trying to explore everything they can.” A pause. “We’d also have to mind the franctales and the barbasucettes though. They can get a bit territorial—though I think with the franctales its simply because they’d rather be alone.”
Which was honestly quite fascinating if he were to be completely honest. As a child, Verso clearly never considered the ramifications of just leaving his little experiments in one corner to do as they wanted. But now, watching them grow into their own child-like society...
A hum in between tearing through some candy floss, he leaned back on a hand and pointed. “A friend about her own size should do. They’d be able to go on fantastic adventures together when I can’t join her.”
"Yeah, I'm sure kestrels are tricky..."
She trails off, hands slipping into her back pockets as she watches him. She'd shown up here on a wing and a prayer, really, mostly expecting to be turned away at the door. It was almost jarring, the sincerity she'd gotten in return. But then again, maybe she just wasn't used to it anymore. Kindness felt like it was in short supply when you mostly dealt with monsters.
"Yeah, well. I'm sure she's plenty jumpy at this point. My place isn't exactly bird safe. It's barely people safe half the time." She tried, but .... well, magic houses had unavoidable quirks. Sometimes it felt more or less like something she'd been trapped in, as opposed to something she'd inherited.
"Thank you." She pauses again, chewing at her lip as she watches him. There were a million and one questions she wanted to ask. Bits of his life she wanted to crack open so she could understand. She kept herself isolated because her life was difficult to understand. Dangerous and weird. Most people would probably shove her away for their own self preservation anyway. But she couldn't quite pinpoint his deal. Why he seemed so alone when he certainly didn't need to be.
"I mean it. She'd end up a sacrifice by the end of the week if she stayed at my place, so I owe you one."
“... You livin’ okay?” The concern couldn’t be helped—borderline instinctual at this point really. If it was a farm, he’d probably get a few things but the girl looked like she hadn’t even seen the sun in like... months.
Well, concerns that could be had for later anyways.
“Don’t be thankin’ me yet. That’s gonna depend on if I remember how to get an open space tarped off.” He paused to roll up the bottom of his shorts just to make sure that the ol’ stump was locked. Sure, Jack could do all of this blindfolded by now but it never hurt to double check. He waved with a hand for her to follow him to his truck.
... Which in hindsight probably should’ve been washed but oh well. A little dirt never hurt anyone.
“Passenger seat’s a bit squeaky so y’know.... fair warning and all.” He went ahead and unlocked both sides, hopping into the driver’s seat. “You got a music preference? So y’know... you don’t gotta be listening to old people stuff.”

PROMPTS FROM 007 FIRST LIGHT (PART 1) * assorted dialogue from the first hour of the game, adjust as necessary.
we need visuals and a status.
what sort of retrieval are we talking about?
we are under attack.
i'm looking at the thing now. or what's left of it.
you're still on a need-to-know basis.
i'm afraid that's classified.
what's that noise?
i need you to do exactly as i say.
you need an antidote. you've been exposed to a nerve agent.
what exactly am i looking for?
have a little rest and then get to somewhere safe. you've done great.
you just get out of the camp and sit tight.
i'll follow. see what i can do.
remember who you're up against.
now you start to worry about me.
what's the point, then? they're all going to die anyway.
i think some of the others are still alive.
you need to get out of the blast zone.
stand down. that's an order.
listen carefully. you have a less than one percent chance of success.
no time to hesitate. those people need my help.
that's where i'll find the captives.
hey, listen. we don't have much time, and we need to get you out of here.
what about the others? we can't leave without them.
you'll know when you see it.
i don't know how to drive this thing!
this should keep them busy.
you could have saved them if you had spoken up.
your friends died protecting nothing. what a waste.
listen. i already freed your friends. we don't have much time.
these guys mean business.
all right. time to bring the house down.
that should stir things up a bit.
what are you doing? come on! run!
light the place up! do not let them escape!
follow me this way. there's a way out.
what is this now? you want to blow us up?
i'm not MI6.
do you have an appointment?
you sound familiar.
gotta say you're healing fast.
so... i'm in trouble.
can i grab you for a second?
now let's not get carried away, [name].
you're really enjoying this, aren't you?
everything you need to know will be explained to you shortly.
i must say you're all taking this code of secrecy seriously.
you're very talkative, aren't you?
i do enjoy a quiet office. i'm sure we can limit the small talk.
i was unaware i was under MI6 command and i just chose not to take your advice.
i believe it's more a case of authority having issues with me.
look, i know where this is going.
do you mind telling me why i'm here?
i want to make you a spy.
i want you to join my training program.
it's unlikely you'll pass the test.
when do i start?
you're dismissed.
you have some catching up to do.
better get you up to speed.
judging from your profile i'm sure you'll get along splendidly.
your flight's waiting for you, so you'd better get a move on.
you're not here for sightseeing.
to do this, you need skill, discipline, and above all, dedication.
pure dumb luck will only get you so far.
i like what you've done with the place.
you really have a knack for stating the obvious.
i expect the list of things you don't know is quite extensive.
would you do the honors?
okay, show me what you've got.
i do love a challenge.
i think we'd be wasting our time.
✦✦FILE 01: ON MAGIC
Being someone touched by magic brings about an enhancement of the senses to be able to perceive it’s presence as well as see between the reality of what is and what is really there. To some, they might expect John to be able to point at something and go “oh, hey that’s magic”, but in actuality he perceives it in a synesthesia-like perception. Each form of magic (and sometimes magical creature) has it’s own associated feeling and/or sense to it, some tend to interchange and others tend to be the same at all times. Some examples:
Demons and associated magics of hell: these will almost always be associated with sharp scents of fire, ash, and brimstone. It’s hard for him to ignore a demon nearby when they always seem to smell like a burning house to him.
Necromancy: An art that can simply be put as feeling wrong in every sense of the word. Being around it and its users tends to bring up a strange, fuzzy taste on his tongue almost like a molded strawberry while his teeth may feel like they ache.
Chlorokinesis and associated beings of The Green: The smell of flowers, largely, that he could never name and a soft vision of an aura that seems almost far too welcoming for its own good.
General magic: It tends to prickle and prod against his skin almost like needles, occasionally accompanied with associated visions of shimmers and sparks that play at the corner of his eyes.
Spirit related magics: They tend to feel like they pull at the soul, sometimes a gentle tug under his skin for a simple ward creation or a violent tug like whenever his soul’s very being is threatened. If a violent reaction, will almost always end in him painting the floor with his last meal from the shock and pain.
✦✦FILE 04: ON ANIMALS
In short: Animals typically don’t like John.
in long, this is unfortunately a side effect of the demon blood, curses, and well just generally all the other evil shit he’s ever done. The energy that courses through gives off the same kind of hormones that would typically stress out any animal and gives them a convincing feeling that something is wrong with this person and either they need to be as far away as possible or he needs to be.
Luckily though, thanks to the dilution from his normal bits, its typically a 50/50 on whether or not Fluffy will have a horrid field day trying to not poop the carpet because everything about this person just screams danger.
open post - welcome to candid colors
That was the bell on the door, and immediately he was already swearing while trying to shove what remained of a late sandwich lunch off under the desk with the book he had been reading. “Yeah--hi, sorry—”
Damn, this was a lot more awkward of a day than he had been expecting, but his cashier had the flu so he had been left alone.
Jimmy swallowed what he had bit out of the sandwich and wiped the crumbs off with the back of a sleeve. Messy, but he had the benefits of at least owning the shop. “Just--lemme know if there’s something you need me to get or whatever. Got the acrylics behind counter if that’s what you’re looking for.”
She nearly laughs, sound twisting through her chest and coming out something more akin to a sob.
This was stupid. And it felt like it should have been impossible, except she was smart enough to know it wasn't - it was nature, this was how it worked. And she knew the right answer here, she did. Because they couldn't do this. Absolutely could not. Her father certainly never should have had a kid. She could go on for an hour, listing the various heartbreaks that could have been avoided if she'd just never existed in the first place. It was the kind of thing she spiraled over late at night. Whether or not she was a mistake better avoided entirely, even if she was a mistake someone happened to love.
And John ... well, John was another matter entirely.
You couldn't just continue to pile trauma on top of itself, it had to stop somewhere didn't it?
Except she'd have wanted this, in another life where things still made sense. In a life where her puzzle pieces weren't so full of ghosts. And the delusional, hopeful, stubborn part of herself insisted they could manage this. That some part of it had to be worth it. That maybe you could mix a bunch of damaged pieces together and make something okay.
Maybe she just desperately wanted her hands to be full of something other than blood for once, and she loved him to a reckless degree. The kind of degree she thought people could never really reach, and that had to mean something, didn't it?
"I dunno."
She wipes pitifully at her face for a moment, shrugging as she reluctantly slips herself off the couch to place herself firmly in his lap. Because if she doesn't get some kind of contact here, she'll certainly fall to pieces.
"I want to keep it. I know that's stupid."
On some level he probably should’ve expected that answer.
On a normal level maybe those lost 40-some odd years wouldn’t still be affecting him on top of everything else about this. Nails immediately dug into the skin of his palm out of instinct to counter the sudden heavy weight John could feel clawing at his throat. Dry, prickly, was it panic?
Probably, given everything he knew about himself.
“... You know it’ll never be safe. You know moment it breathes, it’s gonna be the most hunted ‘n hated thing in existence.” He could put aside his own selfish reasons for what was just common sense. Heaven and Hell didn’t give two shits about their precious chess pieces, and they sure as hell would give even less of one with one of his spawns. And that wasn’t even with any consideration for the enemies that didn’t have a hand in the grand game that just wanted him dead for any other reason.
Hell, John was sure this would be enough to dredge up even Maria if only for a bit of siblingcide. God fucking forbid dad got a bit of peace for once in his life.
“I... I can’t keep you safe from that.” He tried to keep himself sat straight, but the slump couldn’t be helped. “I can’t keep you both safe from that.”
God, this was fucked up...
If you husband Sebastian you have to face 2 unfortunate facts:
1. Not a dominant bone in his body. This is as bright eyed chicken as you can get.
2. The apartment doubles as a plant sanctuary and he will always be actively adding to it. Do you know where he got that plant? Nope, but it’s bought for and he really wants it ok.
It was extremely easy to gain access to the building. There was very little security. No guards at the door, no secret codes to enter, just a little plastic disc held up to a small black box by the door to unlock it. Cass—she had a name now!—had only needed to hold her head high and follow a couple inside.
No one questioned her presence. The man even held the door open for her.
Sad, really.
Scoping the building out had taken no time at all, and then she was left to wait. Sat on the bottom steps and watched the door with too-sharp eyes until her target arrived.
Confusion, concern, go away—she was growing very accustomed to people acknowledging her with these. She offered the woman a smile in response, a little wave, and rose gracefully to her feet. Looked up the stairs, then back to the woman, head tilting in question.
That had her raising a short brow, frowning. Glancing up... did she actually live up there? Well, crap, here Trinity didn’t think she’d actually be right about that possible cheating scandal. “You need to go up there?”
Unfortunate for the kid, really.
“Eeh, you might as well come with me then.” She was going up anyways, so they might as well just take the elevator together. Trinity motioned with a hand for the kid to follow her, already stepping off to the elevator and waved a hand. “Third floor then?”
Hopefully not to that weird dude who was poorly hiding the dog. That’d definitely bring up a number of things that she sure as hell didn’t want to be a part of. “If you’re waiting y’ might as well wait with me I guess. Better safe than sorry.”
Not that there was anything bad going on but she sure as shit didn’t trust half the residents for a reason.
He smirked despite himself. There were plenty of people who would turn down steak; he was glad he rarely got militant vegans in his ED, because most of them were too stupid to take medication, or trust doctors, but it wasn't impossible for them to rock up. "Hm, okay, not Friday; I mean, it's after work for me so that's probably better anyway. Let me know when you have open. We won't pre book, y'know how shifts are." he murmured. He was also well aware he had a reputation for flaking on dinner dates... for good reason.
“I got a pretty shit appointment time Friday and I know you’d rather shove whatever vaguely qualifies as food in your fridge than actually go out after 12 hours on your feet. So I’d say that works out for us.” A bit of a joke to be had there, Jack rolling his shoulders with a bit of a groan. “Not gonna use it as another excuse t’ get me to look at your car, right?”
Not that that was a completely terrible idea, but Jack was pretty sure he didn’t have the right tools for that one. “Warn me if y’ got any other good ideas though and I’ll grab whatever you need to make it happen. Besides myself, of course.”
