What would be a good rebuttal against someone saying Stefan never would’ve tried to have been good if it wasn’t for Lexi? Or that his love for Katherine was real because he killed the founding families after he was turned and the compulsion broke
Lexi was more like a sponsor an introduction for Stefan to both the good and the bad sides of vampirism. Stefan didn’t try to be better because of her; he tried to be better because she gave him enough information about a vampire’s tendencies. She simply gave him those philosophies.
The thing is, he wouldn’t have become better, even with Lexi, if he hadn’t already wanted to be better. If he’d had no intention of changing or being good, he never would’ve fought to come out of his Ripper binges. Because Lexi was the first vampire Stefan met after Katherine, and Damon had left him, she was simply the medium through which he came to understand vampirism. He got better because someone showed him there were other ways to live, but the reflection and the actions were entirely his own.
Even if Stefan had never met Lexi, he eventually would’ve met someone else or, with time, realised those things himself. If the desire to hold on to his humanity hadn’t already existed within him, he never would’ve followed Lexi in the first place. But he did, because that desire was already there.As a newly turned vampire and an initial Ripper, it was simply too early for him to understand everything on his own, which is why Lexi was introduced. She provided the knowledge, but everything that came after was Stefan’s own decision.
As for Katherine, the thing is, Stefan does say they were attacking the Founding Families because of what they did to Katherine. But if you actually look at the flashbacks, Stefan had ravaged the entire town, and Damon is visibly shocked by the fact that Stefan has killed almost everyone.
That suggests their resentment toward the Founding Families may have been real, but Stefan’s massacre went far beyond revenge. He was ravaging the entire town, not because he wanted revenge for Katherine, but because his animalistic Ripper tendencies had completely taken over. It was also the very beginning of his transition, so he didn’t even fully understand everything about Katherine or what she had done. He went almost immediately into his animalistic Ripper state, so at that point he was still operating under the version of Katherine she had left him believing. But that doesn’t mean he loved her or that his killing spree was motivated by her.
Damon’s reaction makes it clear they didn’t have some grand plan to slaughter the entire town. Their anger over Katherine’s supposed death may have been the initial trigger, but Stefan’s actions quickly became something else entirely.
His bloodlust was controlling him. He was in the darkest place, as he himself later says, and his humanity was off. Those are the real reasons behind the mass killing—not Katherine.
Katherine was simply the initial event that set everything in motion for both brothers because they believed the Founding Families had gotten her killed and also got themselves shoot. But Stefan had no greater motivation to kill for Katherine. He was killing because he had become consumed by his Ripper instincts. he wasn’t even fully conscious of what he was becoming. And he even mocks her in his conversation with Damon, saying that she wasn’t intelligent or careful, and that’s what got her killed. That alone makes it clear he wasn’t in love with her.
Only later, when he began coming out of his Ripper state and understanding himself again, did he realise what Katherine had actually done to him, including the compulsion. That’s when he truly began to hate her. So while Katherine’s supposed death may have been the initial spark, Stefan’s massacre was ultimately driven by his uncontrollable Ripper nature, not because he loved Katherine. If he had, he would’ve actually been doing it for her. He would’ve spoken her name, remembered her, or shown that she was his motivation. Instead, he was busy killing, playing in blood, and becoming completely consumed by this new life. There was no fixation on Katherine only Stefan and his bloodlust. He wasn’t even thinking about her or mentioning her during that period the way Damon did.
