Love doesn’t require romance. It requires commitment and investment into the good and well-being of your partner. It means every day choosing to live life in a way where the good of your partner is a priority. Romance is the icing on the cake. And I’m seeing too many people seeking out romance, and being spoiled, and misconstruing that as love.
Love first. Romance second. Allow romance to be the confirmation of what you know every single day, which is that this person loves me and is committed to my good and well-being.
Marriage isn't just a "piece of paper" and it's not just about being cute on the wedding day. It's about building a life and legacy that will extend far beyond you and your spouse.
That's doesn't necessarily mean children--but it means that your marriage should have a positive impact on the stability of your family and your community. Your marriage should magnify what a healthy relationship looks like. It's about becoming One which takes thought and preparation and then continual commitment after the wedding day. It doesn't happen naturally. You have to commit to learning and growing together for the rest of your lives.
And when I see people do it to look cute or because "that's the logical next step" I know that they will have a rude awakening sooner than later because marriage is a beautiful thing when entered with intention and prepared for and disastrous when it isn't.
