i always think ab how dmitri refers to their family as “insects” and it makes me wonder what Type of insect each brother would be. mostly i see alyosha as a moth and imo it fits really well.
moths as a symbol of transformation (whether he inspires change in others or his own transformation after zosima’s death). also the fact that they’re drawn to light which is pretty self explanatory lol. lastly (going off of this source) that moths eat fabric, or material goods, parallels how his spirituality is meant to erode the ideas of materialism that dostoevsky hated so much.. i really really like moth alyosha ajshdhfhdj

Head this way to discover Gort's Pit.
i love my computer but for some strange reason she has problems with randomly copy pasting things of her own volition (i get it, she's bored) but today she fused multiple exerpts of my Rebecca ebook with my wip fic chapter and while the irony of trying to rip Rabecca out of something she's changed irreversably in context of the novel's themes was not lost on me, it was really annoying scanning an entire 6k word document of tbk fic for that.
been getting really into books about women with awful abusive husbands recently...
it’s just crazy to me when feminist retellings particularly of like ancient or mythological characters manage to have less complex and interesting portrayals of women than the source material. because to be so honest it happens a LOT
Rakitin's character is shaped by impersonation and envy, being a shadow of the Karamazovs, though quite an ineffective one. He envies Ivan, speaking of him with the most venom because no matter how socially skilled he is, Ivan is seen by others as more interesting and intelligent than him. Instead of asking questions, he wants his own answers about this family to be true to prove his own intelligence. He envies Alyosha's moral beauty and natural likeability, being a superficially likeable but insincere and selfish person himself. By trying to provoke him into "corruption", he appropriates such beauty, trying to "expose" his ulterior motives when all he does is project his own, perhaps, to find similarity when his imitation is not enough. He envies Mitya's appealing boldness and vigour, reducing him to his physical impulses, yet bearing the resentment of a "clever man" towards open eroticism (see his attitude towards Grushenka). This last one may seem like a stretch, but it seems like a bit of a Freudian slip that after his ridiculous courtship of Mme Khokhlakova failed, he slandered her in an article by wrongly portraying Mitya as an unattainable object of her desire.
Acting as a wannabe journalist, wannabe seminarian and wannabe seducer, he seems to be Alyosha's counterpart as a "new man": if Alyosha is a "peculiar" type of "new man" that nevertheless embodies the impulse of a generation, Rakitin is an "ordinary" type that embodies resentment and opportunism instead of engaging with impending change. Most of all, he bears class-related resentment that the author does not give him enough sympathy for, portraying him merely as a satirical figure that commits the mistake of "overestimating" social ambition.
Actually in tears because of this stupid image
