Spring Garden
Everything has that nice spring feeling. The ferns are stretching out, the roses going somewhat mad, the tulips are being blown to sad, tiny pieces by the (thankfully now warm) wind.
Every evening now has that exciting trip to the greenhouse (only once so far with a torch, thankfully) - to water anything in need and to engage in the excellent game of “cucamelon or a blade grass?”
Rather pleasingly, one of the chairs has now been expelled onto the lawn (since taking these pictures), which means that the vast majority of the tomato plants are now in their final pots, lining the floor. We have three varieties this year, and rather bizzarely none of the variety we have grown for the last couple of years, even though it is thoroughly delicious (Sweet Million, I think; prone to splitting if watered incorrectly).
The chilli plants (Apache) are revitalising themselves after an overly harsh, scissor-happy prune and some tomato food. Quite glad that the two we’d kept have pulled through, even though we still have in store chillies from their parent plant from two years ago, and some from last year.
Cucumbers are doing very well, watered sparingly to avoid any unwelcome deterioration of the stem. Six in total from a packet which tantalisingly promised five seeds. It’s almost lucky that most of the tomato plants can go outside, otherwise I dread to think how I would fit into the greenhouse with everything else! (Tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet peppers, tamarillos, tomatollos, kiwis...)
Destined to live out and fend for themselves this year: orach, various other salad, strawberry spinach, butternut squash, courgettes, cucamelons, cosmos, mangetout, runner beans, sunflowers, beets, radishes, potato, sweet peas, etc.
It’s going to be another fun, foody summer!
