Some favorites from the last year.
Top left - wool/cashmere sportcoat from Beckett & Robb in a navy herringbone + windowpane. The window pane is subtly broken up by the herringbone weave, and is also made of two small lines rather than one thick one, adding to the visual interest (although, being navy blue, it’s all quite muted still). Worn with a pure cashmere nailhead tie from Drake’s, a spread collar shirt also from Beckett & Robb, jeans from Taylor Stitch, and Alden single monks.
Top right - a wool/silk/linen blend sportcoat from Cantarelli that was one of those rare patience-is-rewarded deep discounts on Yoox. Snagged it for $96.
A rough, tweed-like weave that works well with denim. In some climates it’s a summer jacket - in San Francisco, it’s good for three seasons. Combined with a blue OCBD from Beckett & Robb, an all linen gingham vest (Nordstrom’s Men’s Shop label), the same TS jeans, and vintage shell cordovan long wings.
Bottom left - black tie rig with a black velvet shawl collar dinner jacket (J. Crew, via eBay). Some of J. Crew’s black tie offerings are awful, but they keep their shawl collar jacket classic. I wouldn’t pay $500 for this jacket, but $150 was alright.
Combined with a black-on-black paisley cummerbund, shirt from Suit Supply (although despite being “slim fit”, it still needed to be taken in quite a bit), Trousers from my Proper Suit tuxedo - my first (and somewhat disappointing) foray into MTM).
Bottom right - The tweed odd three piece from last week. Definitely one of my favorite outfits of this year. Jacket, shirt, and trousers are all B&R. The trousers are a heavy VBC hopsack that works well in warm weather, has enough texture to wear with tweed, and drapes so very nicely that I’m seriously thinking about going back to get a jacket made up in it, even though I’m not terribly fond of solid light grey suits. Last time I was at B&R, they said VBC also makes it in a chocolate brown, though…
I acquired a lot of clothes in 2014, but I got rid of even more. I settled on beckettrobb (website) as my maker of choice. I’ve currently got my "sincere suit" on order from them - a charcoal bird’s eye three piece that will be my first wardrobe arrival of 2015.
