"Why should one take up a liberal arts course in college?" Leloy Claudio, an Ateneo de Manila University history and politics professor made his us raise various questions as it somehow took the side of liberal arts students.. In saying that this field is his preference for incoming college students, his main point is "to make college a humanizing experience." Of course, not everyone will agree to his perspective. However, as a liberal arts student myself, some of Claudio's ideas seem to be logical after all. For instance, he emphasizes that it has really been a stereotype of parents expecting their children to take up a management course.
In fact, his observation on how foreign countries are putting so much attention and are investing so much in improving the arts field is pretty evident in today's generation. With this in mind, he says that there is "money to be made in liberal arts." Though I am very much in favor of the thought that liberal arts is indeed a good preference, the thought of "making money" because of liberal arts makes me think otherwise. It developed the mindset of choosing liberal arts over other colleges just because of money - simply a piece of paper with an amount written on it. What I'm trying to say is, it doesn't matter if we choose any type of college as long as we have the heart to pursue what it was initially intended for.
We know that everyone wants to succeed in every way possible. As Leloy (2013) stated, "College carves out a space for [us] to figure out what kind of adult [we] want to become" (para. 5). This only shows that we can be the person we dream of becoming. Yes, maybe liberal arts is indeed a good recommendation to some. However, as what I've said, it is all up to us as to how we see things. Putting Claudio's ideas aside, we must remember that what make us who we are is our choice and not others'.
