Daily reminder to follow me over on @probablyadogblr :)
So I’m pretty much fully on @probablyadogblr now so follow me over there to keep getting good dog content :)
Big NOPE !
I think finding behaviorists and trainers that not only align with your training style, but have actual experience with the type of dog you have is so important. I’m not talking about your dog’s training levels or adopted vs purchased. I’m talking about type: Does the trainer you’re getting to help you with your primitive dog either have primitive dogs themselves or has extensive experience working through primitive dog specific issues? Does your trainer have herding dog or extensive experience with herding dogs to help work you through type specific issues? This is what I’m talking about.
I think, especially with particular types of dogs, the general person finds the “every dog treated the same” type lesson to be of little value. You feel listened to and understood when your trainer can pull from their own experiences about their husky not recalling well or their doberman’s sensitivity. I think this feeling of camaraderie is often why it seems like certain breeds trend towards specific training philosophies because certain types of trainers are drawn to certain breeds (not all trainers of course, i’m talking about the general majority) and less experienced people seeking that camaraderie of people that truly understand the type of dog they have end up falling into that training philosophy.
Y’all wish you had the drop Sophie does
Bonus:
:p
every dog deserves to be understood :(
the most effective means of preventing dog homelessness are 1) providing material support to impoverished and marginalized pet owners and 2) preventing and addressing behavioral issues before they become cause for relinquishment
but that’s far less fun and takes way more effort and human compassion than self-righteously chirping “adopt don’t shop!”
there are a lot of people in the notes of this post making really condescending comments about spaying and neutering pets, and like, all else aside, i want to show you guys one thing.
this is a map showing the ratio of puppies ending up in shelters and rescues by state (x). it is a useful metric for measuring which areas are ending up with a surplus of unwanted puppies. yellow states have a high ratio of unwanted puppies, blue states have a low ratio of unwanted puppies.
this is a map (x) showing the percentage of people living in poverty in each state. darker-colored states have a higher percentage of people living in poverty.
do you notice any similarities between these two maps?
smug lectures on social media are not a meaningful solution to the underlying issue here.
if you want to address dog homelessness, please consider supporting organizations like Beyond Fences, Kane’s Krusade, and other local resources that are providing non-judgmental, material support to dog owners in need.
Sometimes I feel silly for reading fanfiction, or putting together a puzzle, or taking a morning to jack off and take a long shower. I should be doing something productive. I should be pursuing my hobbies that will better me as a person, or my relationships that need attention. I enjoy them, too. Why don’t I do that?
But then I realize that that would be like expecting TenSoon to train all the time. He loves obedience and tracking and even disc just an insane amount. So much so that he barely can contain his love for those activities. But I’d never expect—or even want—him to do nothing but structured activity and rest. It’s not healthy and it’s not productive. He would burn out. So, I take him on hikes or out to the country to just noodle and sniff and swim; I give him Kongs and puzzle toys; I play flirt pole with him; I take him with on errands and to friends’ houses. He’s an animal, and as an animal, he needs enrichment and outlets for natural instincts.
And if it’s that important for TenSoon, why wouldn’t it be equally important for me? Am I not also an animal who needs to relieve stress and exhibit species-typical behavior? I refuse to essentially put myself up in a “crate or work” situation to try to drive productivity.
@melchese
my perfect friend: will it bother dune if I film from a pole setter position?
me, thinking she’s asking if a camera/phone will distract him and thinking absolutely no farther ahead than that: no way, you’re fine!
what she was actually asking: will your walmart greeter of a dog leave course to visit me, one of the great loves of his life, if I’m sitting on course while he’s running?
surprise, the answer was yes
watching this one again and thinking of @campfirecanines and @quichehound scornfully (righteously, correctly) telling me that what i'm doing here is NOT running
can i come cuddle your dog please ?😭
absolutely

i think its very common for dog owners to feel like they aren't doing a good enough job, so here's your reminder that if your dog is mentally stimulated, fed, exercised and loved you're probably doing just fine!!! your dog doesn't know other dogs live different lives, they're not laying around thinking about dogs that live up in the mountains and run around free all day or something. all they know is the life they're living with you, they're just happy in the moment with a person they love. i promise!!!
