I am a Glen Powell fan obviously but twisters could not have come out at a worse time for me. I am a freshman in college this fall and I am majoring in atmospheric science. The pure embarrassment I feel when people think I picked my major because of the movie is strong. I want to work for NOAA’s national severe storm lab which means studying tornados and I’ve wanted to for a while. If someone asks me if I’m going into atmospheric science because I liked Glen Powell in twisters again I’m going to loose it. I haven’t even seen it yet.

Let me break this down in why this decision is absolutely awful. As someone who’s put way to much mental energy into seeing the every changing and horrible landscape that is YouTube and sees how much content creators struggle in the environment.

So let me break it down and tell you why in the history of YouTube this has barley if NEVER worked in the way it’s being presented. Let’s look at why this won’t work.

•Watcher has inconsistent upload schedule which the algorithm (as horrible as it is) rewards consistency

•While the episodes are longer and the qaulity is higher, there is not enough epsiodes per season to justify a paywall of 6.99 per month. There simply is not enough content for the cost despite there being announcements of new series you alienate any new potential audience to even see it

•Alienating the place were the majority of your audience consumes your content for free without at LEAST easing into the idea of it with your audience to see if they would even take to change tells me this was not thought through or lack of the basic understanding of the streaming fatigue/economy stance rn (speaking purely from the US veiw).

•You do not have an audience outside YouTube that is bigger, that is a FACT

•Releasing the 1st episodes from each season with the inconsistent uplaod schedule is not rewarding nor will it bring future subscriptions to your website since YouTube will no longer push your content to new viewers because of the lack of traction to your channel , becaue of LACK OF CONSTANT UPLAOD SCHEDULE. So any potential new comers have been alienatedas well (but we do know Ryan loves his aliens)

•There also seems to be no thought to making bonus content + cut content + exlcuisve material being the thing behind the paywall. Instead it you are taking away all of it and leaving less than a crumb for anything.

•Trying to appease sponsers never works and worst of all trying to become a dieing medium, Aka TV show inspired content is a horrible idea. If it was a good idea, you wouldn’t be trying to be a subscription service ,you’d be trying to be picked up by a network. But clearly you want to have a say in the creative process and how you handle the content. It hurts to see Content creatora want to come out of the box, just to shove themselves into a new one.

•The beauty of YouTube is the fact you are NOT tv, you are your own thing, your own bosses, you’re own creative minds. Trying to apply such standards is frankly never going to work, it is an unreasonable expectation. With no real pay off.

Now for my personal side of it. I had no idea who Steve (steven?) even was. But frankly I never heard of his showon watcher, nor do I even care to watch it. The fact that food is listened first in their description of their channel and not Ghost Files or Puppet history is extremely telling to me. I have been around the block to know that CEOS or leaders of group channels tend to want to put their priorities first. Even if it means dragging down the channel.

I do not care see rich food eaten by rich people. I want to see Ya Boys talk to demons, or dive into Mysterious Files or learn about history with cute /cursed puppet that break into song. The fact that 6 new epsiodes are being pushed for the food series is just more cause for suspicion. And the fact that this content should be moved to a separate channel , but knowing that eating exotic or overpriced foods is extremely over saturated content in yourube rn. I can see why clining to the other shows success would be needed. It couldn’t survive own it’s own. While a harsh statement, it is ultimatelythe climate of YouTube.

Ppl watch Shane and Ryan for their personality. I think I can speak for most of us when I say that Ghost files coukd be film on a flip phone, in the middle of a field with a shity green screen. I would watch it. Because I am here for their banter ,wit, jokes and personalities. While wanting higher quality is not a bad thing it can be blinding to what is the core of what made you successful in the first place.

This is a tale so many youtubers go down and its hardly ever successful. They are either bought by someone bigger to save them from bankruptcy , crawl back to YouTube or fade into obscurity. There are barely any cases to show otherwise of this ever working out.

I see alot of people bring up Good Mythical Morning as a example was what TO DO. Have another show available behind a Pay wall, but keep a good majority on YouTube. Taking everything away but 1 thing that won’t even have a constant upload. Is not just a horrible business move, it is historically one of the stupidest moves any creator can do.

The majority of your audience is not saying things of criticism out of bad faith, it is because we want to support what you do. If wedidn’t, we wouldn’t care enough to say anything. Please reconsider.

I think the most telling aspect of what your fanbase truly wants in production value is that we all wanted a silly, low quality series about Professor Morris Ashley and Saxophone Ryan. Your fanbase is the demographic most affected by the National Debt Crisis and sadly can’t afford yet another streaming service. I know that Watcher is technically a company but you are so so much more than just a faceless media company, you are a group of creative individuals and we all know YouTube is problematic but alienating your fanbase is not going to go well.
