apple .
jess brightwell frequents my mind so heavy all the time I NEED HIM OUT !!!!!! this is one of my favorite drawings of him…just tucked away with 5 million other sketches
a comic i made for @bookwyrminspiration in the @extremetimedchallengeexchange !
I like this fragment of Ash and Quill. It suggests that Jess is familiar with wearing well-tailored clothes, of seeing them all around him. He knows what the signs of bad tailoring are. I know I fucking don't. 😂
We know from his narration that his father's new stronghold in castle raby is a step above anything he's done before in grandeur (enough to impress Dario, or at least surprise him), but yeah I like this reminder that despite what Dario wants us all to think, and despite how Callum was brought up, and despite what Jess himself identifies with (the rough side of the business, the street-child runners etc), Jess was brought up in, let's say comfortable money.
(and given what we know of his father and discipline, I am also happy to whumpify why jess phrases it as 'knew to keep his hands off it')
Do you have any writing tips for writing twin characters? I was thinking about writing them in a 50/50 way. An equal amount of similarities and differences But I don't know if that's a good idea.
Even if they were raised the same way, they’re still two different people. Give them unique quirks, different reactions to the same situation, and personal goals that aren’t just about being a twin.
Example: One twin might be super organized, making lists for everything. The other remembers things but in a messy, scattered way and never writes anything down.
Twins often share habits or instincts, but it’s more interesting if it happens subtly, rather than being a forced 50/50 divide.
Example: They both hum the same song while thinking, without realizing it. Or they both hate mushrooms, but for completely different reasons.
And it’s easy to fall into the “one is serious, one is chaotic” trope. But real twins can be similar in some ways while still clashing hard on certain things. Maybe both are competitive, but one wants to prove something to the world, while the other only cares about winning against their twin.
Remember: Twins have a unique bond, it’s closer than siblings but also full of rivalry, history, and inside jokes. Show those layers. Maybe one finishes the other’s sentence, not because of a psychic twin thing, but because they’ve had the same argument a hundred times and already know how it ends. Or maybe they text each other constantly, but in person, they act like they’re too cool to care.
Plus when they fight, don’t just make it dramatic, make it personal. No one knows how to push your buttons like someone who has known you their whole life. A twin doesn’t just say “You’re wrong” in an argument. They say, “You’re doing that thing where you pretend not to care so you won’t be disappointed.”
Twins have history, use it.
Hope this helps, let me know if you need more! 💫
this specific ephemera stings so bad u know cause like. they so badly wanted to be family to each other but the environment they were raised in would never allow for them to be much more than competition and there was never going to be a world were they didn’t have a certain degree of resentment and distrust for the other despite their love. i think about how callum brightwell was the guiding force in severing their relationship and how the last thing brendan ever said to jess was about him and i feel my soul decomposing inside my body
“Well, then, he’d have to include me, too,” Brendan said, and pointed at his face. “If your face is on a wanted poster, we’re easily mistaken for each other, and I’d hate to end up on the bad end of a lion with poor eyesight.”

“You came all this way to show me?’ Brendan shrugged. ‘Thought it might cheer your day. I know it always bothered you, him not getting his due.”
Ink and Bone, Rachel Caine
“There are six of us left now,’ [Jess] said. ‘Six. Wolfe’s giving six placements. He’s not going to fail me now. And if he does, I don’t care.”

“Jess thought he’d never seen a look so vulnerable—and so relieved—as the one that flashed over Dario’s face at the sight of Khalila, alive and safe.”

Random angsty fandom thought before I try to sleep (hello and fuck you 1am):
Liam was hanged. His father didn't 'step up to identify him' and as a result he was chucked into a mass grave. All right.
But like... The Brightwells had a cover story. A cover life. A comfortable, nay aspirational middle class family with a London town house, a housemaid and a parlourmaid (mentioned in Ink and Bone). Callum is a 'successful importer of goods'. Liam's absence - the eldest son - would have been noticed.
What stories did the family have to tell? What were 10 year old Jess and Brendan ordered to say? That Liam had gone travelling? Gone to fight the Welsh? That he'd drowned in an unfortunate accident, no you can't see the body, it's a closed casket funeral (where everyone is in the pay of the Brightwells.)
Idk. Just some thoughts.
a possibility could be this:
the brightwell’s are well known and i wouldn’t put it past them to stage something shortly after the event. like you guessed: going to fight against the welsh. this explains his absense for a month, maybe two and also allows callum to say his son wanted to fight for his country and wanted to be noble—it gives him more leverage to make his family seem more honorable than they are and gives him a spot of trust in the social hierarchy of sorts. and then they stage the untimely and tragic death of their eldest, lost in the fight to the welsh. it brings up amounts of grief from trusted trading partners for goods and further stabilizes that position they’ve gained because now they’re just a family who lost a son in a tragic but noble incident.. c. brightwell’s certainly wealthy enough to pay someone to write a document that seems official enough. they would have a closed casket funeral and worst of all it would maoe sense. there’s no way to recover his body in the middle of a literal war. hell, i’d go as far as to say they had a whole mourning period for him, too (fake of course, only foe the benefit of the public because brightwell’s cant be seen as weak-backed people.) jess and brendan would likely be told to sell the lie the best they can, though how they fared we can only guess based on characterizations of them now.
as for like officially to those he knew as a market trader, i cant say much. but this is such an interesting train of thought, genuinely!
“Dario glared at Khalila, a thing Jess had never seen him do, and Khalila held the stare firmly. She might be a quiet girl, but shy? No. She didn’t back away from a fight.”
