Souls

Souls are a big part of the Soul Bound universe but may not be fully understood when reading the story so I figured I’d explain it in depth here.

When I was writing SB I questioned about what a soul actually is since everyone I ask irl has a different interpretation and doesn’t properly answer the question, it had to be something you’d be able to give away but might be hesitant to do so. So I made it that it has a solid answer within the story.

As a side note: although angels will be mentioned and they do exist within the SB world, they do not appear in the story due to their canonical behavior and nature. Angels have never been recorded to leave heaven and demons cannot enter heaven. Meaning there is no connection to them and therefore they do not appear.

What exactly is a soul?

A soul is a part of one’s being, however it is not your life essence like most media make it out to be. In the Soul Bound universe a soul is your ticket to the afterlife or in the case of celestials: reincarnation.

When an individual is born the soul has a certain level of information stored but is otherwise blank. The default information within a soul is basically the traits you are born with, such as things like curiosity, sexuality, gender identity, instincts, etc. In other words it is the aspects about yourself that you are unable to change, aspects that were woven within your very being. As a person ages and experiences life, their soul fills in the remaining blanks and shapes themselves into a more consistent shape.

Anything that has a soul (humans, demons, angels, etc.) are very much capable of living without a soul, however when they do die, they’ll cease to be. When does one lose a soul? You may ask. When a soul is damaged to the point it can’t maintain its shape after death then it will shatter completely and more or less turns to dust, taking the consciousness of said soul with it into the void, never to be revived again. Another way when a soul is technically lost is when you transfer ownership of that soul, which is typically done by the method of soul contracts. When a soul is sold and the individual dies, the person’s consciousness fades at a rapid rate, similar to when a soul is lost except the soul retains its shape and maintains the information that the soul has built up over the years.

What exactly are the differences between a human and celestial souls?

When talking about celestials it typically refers to demons and angels, who have roughly the same composition. When compared to humans their souls are significantly weaker, meaning it isn’t uncommon for them to not survive post mortem. The rates celestial souls cease to be are unique to whether you refer to demons or angels as angels have a higher rate of being wiped from existence. The rate for angel souls fading post mortem is roughly 70-85.3% while those of demons are currently 40-55%, although demon soul survival rates used to be much lower with a soul fading rate of 65-85%. It is theorized that the reason for the higher survival rate in modern times is as a result from prolonged exposure to humanity. The basis on this theory is due to the fact that angels do not have direct exposure to humanity while demons do, hence why angel rates of soul death remain so high. It would also explain why the survival of demon souls increased over millennia as human civilization evolved and human mortality rates decreased.

It is believed that celestial souls are weaker than those of humans due to their lifespan and magical abilities. Humans live on average to around 80 years old and do not possess powers while demons and angels do have powers and are immortal. Celestials do not die from age and are immune to most human/animal diseases, thus they only die when killed by an outside force (usually each other, humans or other forces). In short, it is believed that the soul strength is the trade off for lifespan and resilience.

What type of soul do hybrids have and are they mixed?

While human-demon offspring are a thing, their souls are not a mix between the two. Hybrids are by technicality not a thing as they usually result in a child that is either human or demon. Angel hybrids do not occur either due to the lack of proximity. Angels do not interact with humans nor demons, therefore hybrids do not occur.

I had so much fun meeting Pyro, Philza and Kristin at Twitch Con Rotterdam. I did see Cleo, Ren and False as well but unfortunately wasn’t able to say hi to them. Hopefully soon I can get started on drawing Philza and Kristin as Soul Bound inspired creatures.

For Philza and Kristin I had in mind to make them false angels, just like Grian and Jimmy. I told them briefly that I intend on drawing them based on the story I’m writing.

For context: Soul Bound is my original story that has been in the works for 3 years so far and I don’t intend to stop working on it. In Soul Bound there are many different demon species (which I will make a detailed biological summary of eventually). The species are a mix of my own original species and my take on existing mythology.

So far I have done the following creators:

Scar as a fate - fates are centaur-like in build but instead of hooves they have paws and are generally more like cats or dogs. They are typically pretty docile and curious. They’re also one of the largest species on average. They’re hardly considered to be demons (much like other species) but are very much part of the demonic category.

Bdubs as a somnum - somnums are vaguely moth-like, males have long slicked back horns that can resemble antenna and they originate from the Sloth ring. They are associated with sleep and have been recorded to sleep so long that moss and foliage grows over/on them.

Gem as a satyr - satyrs are often docile, hoofed demons and in the SB universe they’re not specifically goat inspired, instead being most hoofed animals in general (think deer, goats, antelopes, gazelles, horses, etc.). They are often on the herbivorous side but can still eat meat.

Grian and Jimmy as false angels - false angels are demons inspired by the concept of biblically accurate angels, their wings being covered in eye-like patterns. In their default state they tend to have 2-4 wings, however when they are asleep they tend to grow more wings, which is a defensive intimidation tactic they evolved with. The eye patterns serve to intimidate would-be predators and also discourage ambush predators. Due to the many wings they can appear as giant balls of wings, feathers and eyes which can definitely be intimidating if you really think about it.

Kept forgetting to post this but I drew Bdubs as a somnum from the Soul Bound universe.

I previously had drawn Scar as a fate and did Bdubs after, I have also finished drawing Grian recently which I will also post soon :3

The lantern he is holding is a reference to Soul Bound, specifically the lanterns in the Sloth ring which change colors based on whether it is day or night, which in it of itself is a sort of clock. Somnums are also vaguely moth-like so a lantern fits because of that too. I still wanted to give him his normal clock for obvious reasons.

I’m also working on Gem and plan to do Jimmy after and I hope I get to finish those two before Twitch Con on the off chance that I happen to run into them there! I will draw other creators eventually too but I definitely can’t finish everyone before the Con.

I'm going to have to take a minute to process this, because it had not occurred to me that "don't tell grieving loved ones that the person they are actively mourning sucked ass and is better off dead" would've been a common enough faux pas that they had to make a whole phrase about it.

MCYT Demons update!!

I might redraw SB!Scar cuz I’m currently working on Bdubs and the comparison of quality is frustrating and depressing but I will do that after I’m done with Bdubs (probably, unless it starts to really piss me off).

I’ve done a good portion of the line art, only the horns and wings need the line art now and then I can get to coloring!

For those who are unaware, I am working on drawing MCYT creators as demons from the Soul Bound universe (see my master post/pinned post). Soul Bound is my original series which I’ve been working on for about 3 years (3 years officially on April 10th) and although most demon species don’t make an appearance (so far! I plan on doing more hell based content!) I still have a lot of demon concepts in my personal notes and am working on biology notes too (which I also plan on posting here at some point, progress is painfully slow 😓).

This is the first time I have ever drawn anyone from MCYT as fan art is not my forte so all the designs of the creators are all my very first attempt. The reason I am working on this project in the first place is because of several things. I’ve watched the clip of Bdubs and Scar talking about fan art and tagging them on repeat and Scar’s enthusiasm and love for fan art really motivated me to make fan art and then tag the creators respectively to give them the opportunity to see it (also to make sure Scar doesn’t get upset about not getting tagged lol). I was also just generally curious about what species they’d be and how they’d look like, so this can be seen as an AU or something like that, I’m also using this to practice character design because I love messing around with designs and colors.

Scar is a Fate which is a centaur-like demon species but instead of a horse body it’s more like a cat or a dog (I see it as a mix of the two) and with him I gave him Jellie’s fur pattern.

Bdubs is a Somnum which is a more moth-like demon and is on average the smallest race and are associated with sleep, they sometimes sleep so long that flora grows on top of them, which I thought would be fitting for our mossy clock obsessed bed master, Bdubs.
