“O.T.O.T.W.” is the debut single by Toronto-based artist James Wyatt Crosby.
The songwriter and multi-instrumentalist makes catchy, grand-scale dreampop songs with a lo-fi DIY ethos. Crosby purposely printed effects to tape during the initial tracking of O.T.O.T.W., adding an indelible atmospheric wash to the mix. “There’s also an autoharp in the recording which has a really sweet strummy sound and glues the whole song together,” he adds.
Crosby’s vocals are pitched up slightly, adding a sweet, dreamy edge to the track. The song’s lyrics, delivered over a happy melody and lush dreampop arrangements, drift back and forth between bliss and melancholy.
“I wanted to make a song that explains the feeling of being in a really good place while knowing that it’s fleeting and things will ultimately change,” explains Crosby. “I was listening to The Smiths and Talking Heads a lot when I was writing and recording it. I feel those bands do a good job of making songs that are simultaneously happy and sad, and that’s kind of what I was going for.”

It’s that time of the week again – CBC Hamilton reporter Adam Carter is back with his three picks for new Ontario music that you need to listen to. Check out great new tracks from Will Currie and the Country French, Lonnie in the Garden and Emilio Bonito.
“Marth from Hamilton’s Emilio Bonito is a great example of contemporary finger-style guitar. Fans of the greats like Don Ross and Andy McKee will find lots to like here. And nerds will appreciate the nod to Nintendo’s Fire Emblem series.“ —Adam Carter, CBC
