Since the subject came up, would anybody be interested in reading an extremely self-indulgent fic (866 words) I wrote a while ago about Celebrimbor's dental anatomy and elvish teeth tissue and the impact it has on Annatar and why Finrod could fight a werewolf with his bare teeth? 😭😭😭😭

I know dentistry in the Silmarillion fandom is a very niche interest that probably nobody has, but I genuinely just love my job so much

i noticed a pattern, so here's a moment of appreciation for the very very many female youngest children in tolkien's works:

we have aredhel, in some versions, galadriel, idril and celebrían (since only children are still youngest children), lúthien, elwing, arwen, the unnamed daughters of aragorn, morwen, rian, emeldir, nienor, haleth, ancalimë, eowyn, lothiriel - i could keep going across families, time periods, species.

this struck me really hard because in my cultural background, and sadly many others, parents often keep having children until they get a boy. especially in older generations it's more common to see a youngest/only child who is male because they are the goal, while girls are seen as less useful, not expected to work and inherit businesses or even move out, unless it is to live with her husband.

so yeah, probably just a cultural difference, and definitely not what jrrt was thinking about. but really unexpectedly heartwarming to see so many families ending with a girl.

don't get me wrong i'm really excited to see loki in doomsday but i kinda can't get over the fact that the loki i really fell in love with is dead, and now i've got this other loki who feels just a pinch out of character. he's great and i love him but i had really wanted to see thor and loki interact after ragnarok, and they were like. nah lets fucking kill loki right at the peak of his character development. it's fine. i'm fine.

Being a fan of a morally grey character is frustrating because people will try to reduce them to either being an innocent little angel or a completely heartless monster and both of these interpretations just take away what makes the character interesting

kidnap fam is highkey just anne of green gables + murder. did they want those children? not really. did they end up keeping those children? yes. did love grow between them? without doubt.

they're even both sibling pairs with m names, one being initially more enthusiastic about adoption. it's been a while since i read it, but the anne i recall could be described as 'kind as summer'. there's so many parallels, i can't be the only one seeing this

My favorite Silmarillion deaths

1. Finrod. My DUDE killed a werewolf with his TEETH after breaking his own chains. Also had the courage to song-battle Sauron (who was part of the choir that SANG THE WORLD INTO EXISTENCE). Nerves of steel I love this man.

2. On the subject of Sauron. Died cause he was too busy laughing to escape God's Wrath (pathetic, genuinely pathetic)

3. Fingolfin: CHALLENGED THE DEVIL TO A 1V1. Yeah he died in the process, but still. Nerves. Of. Steel.

4. Maglor & Daeron: Schrödinger's deaths. Are they even dead? Maybe they survive to modern day idfk.

5. Crispy Amrod: This death amuses me. What it feels like to sleep past your alarm core. Also the inherent tragedy of being treated as your twin's other half for all your life then being separated.

6. GLORFINDEL!!! Death was tragic and badass. Someone get this man a Hair Tie. Also love that the fanon reason he doesn’t join the fellowship is that he Glows Too Much for a stealth mission.

7. Saeros: Fell off a cliff while running away from the guy he hatecrimed. Hate him.

8. Maeglin: literally prophesized to fall off a cliff.

9. Elwing: Why do so many people fall off cliffs in this book. She's a bird now though. Good for her i guess.

10. Celebrimbor: also known as Celebrimbanner. Respect for holding up for so long under torture for like two years. Slay (got slain).

anyway. I'm back to caring deeply about the Silmarillion fandom and have some more stupid opinions to share.

people are always saying Maglor is the Hozier of Arda and I kind of get it but also NO! Hozier is a blues/folk-rock musician, he is DAERON! Maglor is Bastille, i.e. loud, emotional alt-pop about how everything is going to shit and we sure do live in a society but fuck it we ball. with, like, a full orchestra in the background.

Finrod is Vance Joy.
