Despite being produced during full blown communist times, I'll say that a lot of our old movies are 1000 times better than the dumb slop we produce nowadays in Romania
We have a very small niche of serious drama movies that tackle social issues and get a lot of rewards in the West yes, but the majority of our cinema released movies nowadays are made for promos. Youtuber promos, influencer promos, plain product promos. And they're ALL comedy. Not even good comedy mind you, it's just a whole lot of swearing and bad jokes.
I watch some of them to turn my brain off, but every time there's an old school 70s-80s-90s movie on tv, I'll love it so much more.
We used to love making historical dramas. Investigation comedies. Hell we even had a period musical based on a play! And the regular comedies we used to make were also borderline dramas talking about day to day life in that time period.
We used to have whimsical fantasy movies for children!! The "Veronica" series had some of the best costumes of the era. And I vaguely remember another movie that combined regular movie shots with 2D animation.
These are some of the costumes from the Veronica series:
The Fox especially has such lovely frilly dresses whenever she has a scene
Also costumes from "Coana Chirița" which was our musical series based on an actual written play:
Also, because I know there's a lot of Dracula fans, you guys can watch the 1979 Vlad the Impaler movie for free! And it's subbed in English even!
Here's the Youtube link
Now be warned, it's historical drama. There are no vampires. You actually get to see parts of his reign instead and how he dealt with politics.
It's also not your regular pretty young dude cast.
Touching grass is not enough; I need to travel far over the misty mountains cold.
