I really wanned a fear hole lock screen, but it's never shown in a frame I had in mind, so I drew it the way I wanned. figured i'll post it, someone may want it as well.
Obsession was a very well made horror film with a very gripping plot but no matter how hard I think about it I can’t figure out what it’s trying to actually say.
I’ve read a great deal of reviews on this film but seeing the discorse about it is making me question my sanity a little bit. No matter how many takes I read, I cannot see Bear as the evil villain of the story.
It’s true that he took Nikki’s autonomy away and imprisoned her in her own body. He ruined her life. but here’s the thing: He didn’t know he was doing that.
Obsession exists in a world where magic isn’t known to exist. Bear’s throwaway wish came true without his own knowledge and although he knew something was off he chalked it up to Nikki going going through a hard time in her life.
Far be it from me to defend a white man but I feel like Bear truly did love Nikki. He went to buy her a Crystal necklace because she mentioned that she lost hers. The movie is very vague on whether Nikki had romantic feelings for Bear but what’s obvious is that they trusted and cared for eachother.
Which makes the conditions around the spell even worse. Bear doesn’t make the connection between Nikki’s erratic behaviour and the one wish willow (because he doesn’t believe in magic obviously) until after he drops Ian off and the box falls out of his bag. He then immediately calls the manufacturer who tells him that the only way for the spell to be broken is if one of them dies.
And it’s on this point where the story gets most complicated in terms of character. Bear’s biggest weakness is not villainy, it’s cowardice. He doesn’t want to die. He doesn’t want to kill Nikki either. She’s his best friend, the girl he was (is?) in love with. So when Nikki asks Bear to kill her, he gets defensive. “What would be so bad about being with me?” Is it worst than death? He doesn’t know the the extent of the pain Nikki is going through. But to him, death is worse, right?
Bear doesn’t have the agency the internet thinks he has. Of course this doesn’t take away from the pain he caused Nikki, this doesn’t take away from the damage he had done but I think these are the nuances that need to be considered when talking about such stories.
I think Bear’s spineless apathy shows most when he tells the operator that he doesn’t what to cancel the spell, just alter it. I think the movies should’ve given him the option to cancel.
And here is where I think the movie fails at really saying something. By taking the agency away from Bear.
It’s a more or less a similar story beat to that of The Substance, except unlike Elisabeth, Bear doesn’t know what he’s doing and he’s not presented with an option to stop.
Imagine if Bear could stop Nikki’s pain, and he wouldn’t, Sara dies and he wouldn’t, Ian dies and he wouldn’t, and then he kills himself because the idea of Nikki not wanting him is something he won’t consider. He dies and ruins Nikki’s life because he is too selfish and cowardly to let her go. But that’s not what happens.
Obsession is a movie that ends when it ends. It’s not commentary. It’s an exploration of a fantastical scenario. I really liked it but I’ll be sad about how it could be more.
