The Pain Between Two Souls
Chapter 3: The Seal Breaks
The instant when the wet weight of his hair slid away from the nape of his neck and the skin there was exposed.
Wen Xu went still.
“…Ah…what’s this?”
Lan Wangji did not need to see the man’s expression to understand.
A slow, familiar tension crept through his body before he could suppress it. The muscles along his shoulders tightened instinctively, the chains above him giving a faint metallic creak as his weight shifted.
He controlled his breathing again.
But it was already too late.
Wen Xu had noticed.
“How odd...”
Lan Wangji’s gaze sharpened despite the exhaustion dragging at him. His vision had blurred earlier, but now the edges of the room suddenly seemed clearer.
He knew what Wen Xu was looking at.
The seal burned into the base of his neck.
Even after all these years he could still remember the heat of it when it had first been carved into his skin. The careful precision of the array. The quiet determination of the elders who had placed it there.
Bond suppression.
Wen Xu brushed aside the remaining strands of hair with deliberate care.
The touch was light but intrusive.
Lan Wangji’s fingers curled slightly within the shackles.
“…A soul bond,” Wen Xu said quietly.

Chapter 2: The Disturbance
Breaking curfew was one offense.
Bringing alcohol into the sect grounds was another.
Without hesitation Lan Wangji drew Bichen and stepped forward to intercept him.
Lan Wangji did not hesitate. Bichen slid from its sheath as he stepped forward onto the roof, blocking the intruder’s path.
The boy froze.
Lan Wangji noticed it instantly. The way his body went still, his shoulders tightening as his head slowly lifted. His eyes went wide the moment they met Lan Wangji’s gaze, surprise flashing across his face as if he had not expected to run into anyone at all.
For a brief moment, he simply stood there staring.
Then something changed.
The surprise melted away and his lips curved upward, spreading into the biggest and brightest smile Lan Wangji had ever seen.
Not mocking.
Not nervous.
Just… pure joy.
It was so sudden, so genuine, that Lan Wangji paused.
The boy looked at him as though he had just discovered something wonderful. Then he laughed softly under his breath, shifting the wine jar against his hip as if completely unbothered by the sword pointed in his direction.
Lan Wangji tightened his grip on Bichen.
The boy’s smile only widened.
And then he moved.
Lan Wangji lunged at the same time.

The Pain Between Two Souls
The poll results are in and the soulmates au for shared pain won! So here’s a small scene from it while I work on the full fic. This one will be very angsty, so consider this your warning.
~~~~~
"I'm so hungry..." Lan Zhan said through a trembling breath. He really was trying very hard not to cry.
"You ate dinner today, didi. Snacks are forbidden after curfew," Lan Huan said automatically.
Yet he still reached over to his qiankun pouch beside the bed and pulled out a small bundle of nuts, holding them out to Lan Zhan.
"Eat."
Lan Zhan stared at the offered food. He didn't want to take it. He didn't want to break the rules.
But... it hurt. It hurt so bad.
And so, deciding that he would punish himself tomorrow, he took the nuts and ungracefully shoved them into his mouth as if he hadn't eaten in days, emptying the entire bundle.
Lan Xichen watched dumbstruck, eyes wide at the unusual behavior. Seeing him eat like this was startling.
"Better?" he asked.
"No..." Lan Zhan whispered miserably. "Still hungry... still hurts."
He whimpered quietly, the sound escaping before he could stop it. He hated this feeling. Hated being weak.
"Oh didi," Lan Huan said gently, worry creeping into his voice. "If I let you eat any more your stomach will hurt. Come."
He scooted over in the small bed and lifted the blanket, waiting for Lan Zhan to climb in.
Lan Zhan hesitated, but the pain inside him made it hard to think. Slowly he climbed into the bed beside his brother.
Lan Huan wrapped an arm around him, pulling him close in a warm, comforting embrace.
“It will pass,” he murmured softly.
Lan Zhan nodded against his shoulder.
But the hunger did not pass.
Because somewhere far away, another child had not eaten for days.
Wei Ying moved closer, cupping Lan Zhan’s face in his palms and leaned in until their foreheads touched.
“You never chained me,” he whispered. “You held me steady. You gave me space when I needed it—and love when I didn’t know how to ask.”
“You think you’re your father,” he continued, voice tight. “But he locked your mother away to protect her from the world. You? You follow me straight into the fire, again and again, protecting me when needed. Being a pillar when needed. You taught me how to be free and in love.”
Lan Zhan shuddered.
“I’m not going anywhere,” he said. “You know me—I’ll get mad, I’ll say things I don’t mean. I’ll slam doors, I’ll be a pain in the ass.”
A soft breath, unsteady.
“But I’ll always come back. Always. We’ve been through too much. We’ve bled for each other. Died. Came back. And somehow, we still found our way here.”
Lan Zhan’s eyes fluttered shut like the weight of those words physically broke him open.
Wei Ying kissed him. Not like before—not soft. Not gentle. It was raw. A little desperate. Full of apology, and need, and all the things he didn’t know how to say.
When they pulled apart, Wei Ying rested his forehead against Lan Zhan’s, breath still, shallow, their hands still tangled in something too tight to name.
“I’m yours.”
His voice was soft, almost sheepish—but it didn’t waver.
“If you need something to hold onto… if you need to get it out—do it.”
A pause. He breathed in, and out.
“Punish me. For scaring you. For running.” His eyes met Lan Zhan’s glassy ones.
“You don’t need permission, Lan Zhan. Just… take what’s already yours.”
Chapter 14: Everyday Means Everyday
AO3: Moonchild912
Wattpad: Moonchild0912
Now that the hustling marketplace had quieted down, Lan Zhan stepped out into the crisp night air. With one hand clasped behind his back, he strolled down the dimly lit streets, watching as vendors packed up their stalls and prepared to retire for the night. Lost in thought, his mind heavy with memories, he was startled by a faint melody drifting through the stillness—a poorly played, almost jarring tune.
Lan Zhan flinched at the sharpness of the sound, the notes so clumsily rendered that they grated against his ears. Instinctively, he turned to walk away from it, but something in the melody made him pause mid-step. He froze, heart skipping a beat. Turning back around, he began walking toward the sound, his chest tightening with every step.
Was he grieving so deeply that he was now hearing things?
The closer he got, the more his heart threatened to pound its way out of his chest. As painful as the melody was to hear, it carried notes that were unmistakable—notes he thought he’d never hear again. Notes that had only ever been played in the presence of his family.
Only Wei Ying and Sizhui had known this tune.
The melody grew louder, filling the empty night with its haunting echo. Lan Zhan quickened his pace, his steps turning into an almost frantic run.
“Could it really be?” he wondered, the hope and disbelief warring in his mind. “Am I truly hearing Wangxian, or has my grief consumed me to the point of imagining things?”
Lan Zhan made his way through the forest and into a clearing, his steps measured and quiet. The soft murmur of a creek grew louder, guiding him forward, but the darkness cloaked his surroundings, making it difficult to see. He refrained from summoning Bichen, unwilling to risk its glow giving away his presence.
The melody persisted, each broken note tugging at his heart, until the sound of his approach caused the playing to abruptly stop. The figure near the tree startled, jerking upright, preparing to flee.
Chapter 13: The Return
AO3: Moonchild912
Wattpad: Moonchild0912
"Go kill yourself, you damn cut-sleeve! How dare you?!" The vicious voice tore through his thoughts, and Wei Wuxian’s body jerked as a kick landed harshly against his side.
A larger man, or boy, grabbed him by the collar, lifting him off the ground with a cruel sneer. His feet barely touched the floor, and everything around him spun into a blur. What was happening? Why was he here? He couldn’t comprehend the words being spat at him. “How dare tell on me?!” the man ranted, but Wei Ying didn’t even recognize his face. The anger in his voice meant nothing.
Wei Ying slumped in the man’s grasp, his body feeling like dead weight. His eyes were drawn to the other intruders wreaking havoc around him, breaking everything they could get their hands on. Suddenly, he was thrown across the room, landing with a heavy thud, the pain shooting through his body.
The door slammed shut behind the men, and Wei Ying lay there for a long moment, the pounding in his head gradually subsiding. What had just happened? He hadn’t been prepared for this—one moment, he had been speaking to A-Yuan, and then he was cast into darkness. At least the voices had stopped.
“I need to get back to Gusu,” he muttered, determination settling in his chest. His mind was a whirlwind of confusion, but his purpose was clear. He needed Lan Zhan. He needed to be home.
As he gathered himself, a book caught his eye. It lay open on the floor, its pages torn and frayed. His heart lurched as he recognized it. “This... this is my creation...” His voice faltered as he took in the sight of the shredded pages.
His gaze shifted to the floor where an intricate formation was drawn in blood. As his eyes traced the lines, a sick realization began to creep into his mind. The formation—it was a soul summoning sacrifice. Someone had gone to extreme lengths, sacrificing everything including a chance to be reincarnated, all for vengeance. And they had chosen him—the Yiling Patriarch, the most feared man in history—as their tool.
Rubbing his aching temple, Wei Ying took in the gravity of his situation. If he wanted to truly be reincarnated, to reclaim the chance at life that had been ripped away from him, he would need to fulfill the revenge this unknown person demanded. But how? The person had not even stated what their wish was. How could he exact revenge without knowing the cause of it?
Another thought flashed through his mind—the sacrifice. Wei Ying was flesh and blood. Was it possible…? Could this be his second chance, the chance to live the simple life he had always wanted with his family?
Chapter 12: Memories
AO3: Moonchild912
Wattpad: Moonchild0912
Another year had passed. Wei Ying was relieved that his soul had held on for as long as it has, thankful for not missing anymore of A-Yuan’s growth. Lan Zhan had started taking the disciples on supervised night hunts over the past two years. Having his son as his disciple was a relief. Not only can Lan Zhan and Wei Ying keep an eye on him but Lan Zhan can ensure that he is safe and train him at the same time. Wei Ying had noticed over the years that A-Yuan learns better and faster with experiences rather than lectures.
One afternoon, Lan Zhan found himself at Koi Tower accompanying the sect leader, but he had other intentions. He slipped out of the hall and mounted his sword flying towards the hunting grounds.
The air in the Lanling Jin sect’s hunting grounds was thick with the hum of cicadas, the faint rustling of leaves, and the distant call of birds. Lan Zhan landed silently at the base of the tree, the one tree etched permanently in his memory. His usually stoic face softened, a flicker of vulnerability crossing his features as he looked up at its branches. The tree had stood witness to a moment he had both cherished and regretted in equal measure—a moment where restraint had shattered, and his feelings had spilled over in a kiss that changed everything.
Wei Ying stood at the base of the tree, wide-eyed and stunned. He stared at Lan Zhan as the realization dawned on him, clear as daylight. It was this place. This tree. This moment where their fates had entwined in ways he had never fully understood until now.
"It was you?" Wei Ying muttered, his voice laced with disbelief. He paced back and forth, running his hands through his untamed hair. "How did I not piece it together sooner? The looks, the restraint, the way you always seemed to know how I felt... Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan, what am I going to do with you?" He sighed, shaking his head fondly before looking back up at Lan Zhan, perched on one of the higher branches.
Wei Ying recalled that day as if it was yesterday. Jin Zixun had challenged him to hunt blindfolded, believing that he wouldn’t be able to do it. He had finished his part in the hunt and was perched up on a tree branch, blindfold still on, when suddenly a figure had jumped in front of him, restrained his arms, and kissed him. He thought it was a lady who had a crush on him, but who knew it was his Lan Zhan. Wei Ying laughed at the thought of the Lan disciple acting on impulse at the age of 20.
Wei Ying leapt, landing lightly on the same branch, just in front of Lan Zhan. The motion was swift, silent, and for a brief second, he forgot that Lan Zhan couldn’t see or hear him. He looked directly at him, his eyes softening with an emotion he couldn’t name.
Then it hit him. A sudden, fiery warmth radiated through the air, not unlike the comforting warmth of Lan Zhan’s soul that Wei Ying had grown accustomed to over the years. But this was different—fierce, intense, and... familiar. Wei Ying froze, his heart thundering in his chest.
Could it be?
Chapter 11: A Minor Inconvenience
AO3: Moonchild912
Wattpad: Moonchild0912
Wei Ying’s gut twisted with an unfamiliar discomfort, though he couldn’t quite pinpoint why. He could feel the gentle but unmistakable warmth of Lan Zhan’s soul, a quiet reassurance that steadied him. Yet, there was something about this woman that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. He stayed close, watching the exchange unfold.
Wei Ying noticed the way this Nie YuNan looked at Lan Zhan. Was this her? The one the Grandmaster had spoken about? Had he deliberately sent Lan Zhan on this mission to orchestrate their meeting? A slow fire ignited inside Wei Ying, a beast roaring within him, "Mine!" The possessiveness surged, hot and unyielding, for the man standing next to him.
Wei Ying turned his attention back to the woman, scrutinizing her every movement. The way she stole glances at Lan Zhan, the way she repeatedly fussed with her hair—it all grated on his nerves. But what truly unsettled him was how much she reminded him of himself. The persistence, for one; her talkative nature, filling the silence even when receiving no response; the playful teasing usually reserved for close friends. Wei Ying scrunched his forehead, “did they really know each other? Did the Grandmaster show confidence because she reminded him of me? Hoping to replace me in Lan Zhan’s life?”
I’m so normal for them…
