This is my first drawing of Moshang! It took me so much time and energy! It was way more complicated than I expected!
I had to come up with my own designs for Mobei Jun and Shang Qinghua, and I really like how they turned out!
The ice honestly had me pulling my hair out!

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about West trio (West trio = Yin Yu + Jian Yu + Quan Yizhen) and the urge to write about them just got unbearable so. Here I am. Yapping. Because they just make me insane for so many reasons and I viscerally need people to think about them too and appreciate them. And their parallels with Xianle trio were eating me alive, so here we are.
Disclaimer #1: I know that we don't know that much about Jian Yu, but in my opinion we can extrapolate enough information about him through the few scenes where he appears. The things I'll say about him are my own personal reading/interpretation of his character and of course you can disagree :shrugs: (but you won't convince me about anything, so don't waste your time trying).
Disclaimer #2: the thoughts I'm sharing here are not about any ships (even if I am a multishipper and have thought about/enjoyed/written them in several different ship configurations before). When I say “love”, I don't mean it in a romantic sense. That's not the most important thing when it comes to them, nor the subject of this post.
Disclaimer #3: I’ll be using Jian Yu’s name in the revised edition, Jian Shi, to refer to him from this point on. You can find an explanation about the meaning of it here that’s wonderfully worded. That post cites this other post about the meaning of Yin Yu’s name. Understanding both those meanings is extremely important to understand who Jian Shi and Yin Yu are to each other.
Disclaimer #4: I already have a small post listing some parallels between HuaLian and QuanYin and some of those ideas will briefly be referenced here too. I also have a meta post about Quan Yizhen and autism (which might help you understand how I read his character).
Disclaimer #5: Eternal thanks to @thelinbean who shared their ideas with me (several paragraphs here are theirs!) and to @tinysobek who kindly betaed this for me and offered her valuable feedback and ideas too (ideas that I’m shamelessly including here too, ofc). This post is basically our little trio talking about West trio and Xianle trio and that makes me so giddy XD
Anyways. Rest of the post is under the cut, etc.
The first thing I need to say is that the West trio evidently parallels Xianle trio (Xie Lian + Mu Qing + Feng Xin). I don't think that's debatable, and we all know that basically everyone in the cast is there to parallel Xie Lian and/or Hua Cheng in some way, either mirroring some part of their story, or offering a narrative contrast about some part of their story/their character traits.
The tragedy of West trio is so very painful and so delicious for so many reasons on its own already, of course, but! It gets even yummier if we consider the possible contrasts with Xianle trio.
The first commonalities between them that I want to address have to do with the concepts of family and home.
They grew up together and have been each other's family since before ascension. Both Yin Yu and Xie Lian bring their most trusted friends to the Heavens.
They're the ultimate connection each other have with their mortal past, their home, their homeland, their humanity. Godhood inevitably takes away some parts of your humanity (even if you still remain human, godhood still is a very dehumanizing thing at its core), yet by having each other, they will always have a connection to those memories that otherwise would not be shared with anyone else. Things like the dialect you used to speak, the people you used to know (and that will die and be forgotten by everybody else), the places that will change/disappear and yet you used to know so well. That's a priceless bond that you simply cannot replace. And…
That’s made even stronger by the filial bond that fellow disciples share. There's a very specific sort of love, respect and devotion in that familial relationship already (but it's very different from the one shared in a biological family).
In short: they studied cultivation together, saw each other grow and change, and shared the intimacy of that closeness (even if there were some divides too, that I will get into later in this post).
Just by considering all this, it's evident how inextricable they are from each other, how important they are for each other, both emotionally and in a narrative sense, as catalysts for their growth and change, a fundamental piece of each other's character arcs.
Feng Xin and Mu Qing still care so much about Xie Lian, even after eight hundred years and their unsolved grievances (that I won't discuss here).
Quan Yizhen has spent more than a century looking for Yin Yu; Jian Shi went down with Yin Yu and (at least this is the impression I got when reading) he was by Yin Yu’s side until he died and turned into a resentful spirit.
The love is there and will always be there, even if in the case of both trios it wasn't enough to change the tragic outcomes that separated them. There's a separation, but it's not eternal. There's a breakup, but it doesn't erase that love and care that's so deeply cemented in who they are.
And talking about separations and breakups: another thing they have in common is the way both Xie Lian and Yin Yu constantly get caught in the conflicts between their respective friends-and-deputies. They have always had to deal with the fights and bickering, and it inevitably influences their own feelings about the two, even when they clearly do their best to not let that happen. This is especially true for Yin Yu and the way his resentment manifests during the Brocade Immortal incident, when he’s full on having a mental breakdown over the whole situation with Quan Yizhen. I think a lot of it had to do with Jian Shi’s complaints that he never denied were for Yin Yu’s sake. Though of course the whole incident :tm: needs a post of its own to do justice to the complexities of it.
So let’s move on.
There's friendship, there's love… and also devotion. Friendship, love, and devotion are all central themes in TGCF, and we get to see so many different outcomes and variations of those themes during the novel! It never fails to fuck me up when I think of that because !!!! yeah.
Anyways, back on track.
In Xianle trio’s case there's also the issue of class that inevitably changes things between them too (though Xie Lian himself failed to see it). West trio doesn’t have the exact same class divide, as none of them is a Crown Prince or a noble, so there’s no master/servant dynamic there, but there’s still a stark difference between Quan Yizhen, who came from the streets, and Yin Yu (whose background is vaguely mentioned) or Jian Shi, who we do not know but doesn’t seem to have come from the streets (it would be delicious if he did, though, and by delicious I mean: the amount of angst I could write about that!!!) and that difference causes friction between them (and between Quan Yizhen and the rest of the sect, or Mu Qing and everyone around him who won't hesitate to leverage that difference to humiliate him).
Both Quan Yizhen and Mu Qing were poor/from the streets, taken in by someone who saw their potential even when others would not necessarily support such an action. They both were constantly misunderstood for their actions: Quan Yizhen being treated like he fights too much when he is defending himself, and Mu Qing being treated like he is a thief when not only is he taking fruit that would rot but had even gotten permission for it. Both are treated poorly for not having the same upbringing as the others. Both Feng Xin and Jian Shi are harsh critics of Mu Qing and Quan Yizhen respectively, while Xie Lian and Yin Yu stand up for them even when Mu Qing/Quan Yizhen still could have acted differently in some instances since the reality was that they were being treated unfairly. But Mu Qing and Quan Yizhen’s reactions to the mistreatment they suffer are very different: while Quan Yizhen demands an explanation for the injustices and fights back with the hope that it would change things, Mu Qing reacts with sarcasm and resignation because he knows the reasons already. Mu Qing’s way to fight back is to build walls around himself, projecting an indifferent persona while still being hyper-vigilant and on edge.
Those strategies didn’t work for any of them, and they both failed to communicate their intentions or show their care and have it acknowledged by their beloved friends, even when they deeply care, in their own ways. Both are perceived as ungrateful, as traitors, who don’t care about Xie Lian and Yin Yu’s feelings, who acted for their own self–serving reasons. Yet Mu Qing was trying to save his mother and save the family he had served for so long, in the only way he could think of that would be good enough, despite knowing how those people in the heavens were —and most probably, knowing how they would see him—. Yet Quan Yizhen put all his efforts into ascending because he thought Yin Yu wanted him to, and did his best to get the rest of the heavens to see how amazing his shixiong was, without realizing that his actions were working in the opposite way, that it would only lead to resentment.
Mu Qing could see what was happening and couldn’t defend himself or explain himself (something he tends to fail to achieve, as he’s bad with feelings, always hiding behind walls and projecting). Quan Yizhen couldn’t understand what was happening and the search for the answer moves him ahead from that point on. Both of them keep that love (an that hurt) inside their hearts.
Mu Qing and Jian Shi have some similarities too: they both try to push Xie Lian and Yin Yu to not be so rigid in their people pleasing tendencies, at least attempting to voice frustrations on their behalf. It doesn’t end well for any of them, clearly. But also: both Xie Lian and Yin Yu are still able to see that Mu Qing and Jian Shi are not doing that just to be annoying contrarians but because they care about them. They still see things too differently, though, and those conflicting views have to do with things they simply won’t renounce. And so there will always be some friction between them, but that’s not what leads to their breakup.
(And on a small tangent: that’s also an issue that both trios share: miscommunication and misunderstandings. It has to do with Yin Yu and Xie Lian’s people pleasing tendencies, with the weight of expectations, with how their society works; it has to do with the way Feng Xin and Jian Shi read any of Mu Qing and Quan Yizhen’s actions in the worst possible faith, and also constantly refuse to even consider the position they’re in, or try to see where they’re coming from; it has to do with how abrasive Mu Qing and Jian Shi are; it has to do with Mu Qing and Quan Yizhen’s respective backgrounds; it has to do with the many layers of idealization, masking, the weight of divinity…)
Feng Xin and Jian Shi have some similarities too: they both have the role of the right hand man and best friend. They’re the protective type, though one is Xie Lian’s actual bodyguard (and later a deputy) while the other was the childhood friend that stayed by Yin Yu’s side through thick and thin (literally following him to the heavens and back…)
Jian Shi got to see Yin Yu in his lowest point in life as it happened and involved him directly, and chose to stay by his side, ultimately dying and turning into a resentful spirit (but we don’t know exactly how that happened, only that Yin Yu pacified his soul with Hua Cheng’s help later on).
Feng Xin was ordered to leave Xie Lian’s side, but he didn’t get to see exactly what had happened to Xie Lian, didn’t get to witness the full extent of the horrors or truly understand why Xie Lian was acting in the ways he did. And obeying that order was a choice that he regretted deeply in the future.
The thing is that both Jian Shi and Feng Xin were presented with the same choice: to stay, or to leave, when they were going to get dragged further down if they stayed… and their choices have a lot to do with devotion.
I think it's fascinating to consider devotion in particular, because there are SO many questions about devotion in both these tragedies:
Who's deserving of devotion? What makes someone deserving of devotion?
What do you do with the devotion of someone else when you don't think you deserve it? Does it matter what you think?
How far is it acceptable to take your own devotion for someone else? Can you impose your devotion on someone who doesn't want it?
What's the threshold for what your devotion can withstand? What does it take for you to lose it?
Is your devotion deforming your view of the object of your devotion?
What do you owe to your devotees?
How do you determine if your devotion for someone else is misplaced?
And how does devotion shape the love and the friendship you share?
(I won’t try to answer all these questions, but I invite you all to consider them whenever you think of these characters in the future :3c)
Feng Xin + Mu Qing and Jian Shi + Quan Yizhen all have the same problem: they look up to Xie Lian/Yin Yu in a way that is almost idolizing, and by doing so they are unable to accept it when their actions do not align with such idealization, thought the shape that “ideal” takes is different for each of them, as the things they prioritize are all different. But it all crystallizes in them not being able to understand or truly get close to the object of their devotion. As a friend told me once, you can’t hold someone while you have them on a pedestal. That position already creates an abyss between them. They’re so close, right there… but they cannot reach, they can’t see the other for who they are, or at least, not completely, not without a certain level of distortion.
Both Jian Shi and Quan Yizhen have a deep love and devotion for Yin Yu, to the point they can't fathom what happened in the end. On one hand, Jian Shi refuses to believe that Yin Yu said those words (“Go die”) to Quan Yizhen; on the other, Quan Yizhen genuinely doesn't understand what the hell happened there at all. To their eyes, Yin Yu (their shixiong and their god) had no such flaws. (That doesn't erase their faith, but Yin Yu doesn't want anything to do with it anymore.)
When Xie Lian descended into a deeper and deeper mental health crisis that pushed him to commit acts that went against his morals, Feng Xin and Mu Qing continued to be devoted despite it all, until Xie Lian successfully pushed them away. Feng Xin even admitted that he would have accepted Xie Lian stealing and wonders why he didn't just do it earlier, before they suffered so much. Mu Qing still tried to help them, coming back with food and trying to explain himself.
Xie Lian and Yin Yu are both pushed to act in ways that go against the sense of self they have built up and the values they upheld all their life, the beliefs that gave meaning to their existence up until that point. Yin Yu also attempts to push Quan Yizhen away when he sacrifices his life during the battle with Jun Wu. Even telling Quan Yizhen to go die, to me, is Yin Yu pushing him away in an extreme manner because he cannot handle the contradiction of Quan Yizhen being so devoted to him while simultaneously "outshining" him, all while Yin Yu has these horrible thoughts (and feels guilty for it). It's like the devotion is too much to live up to. I think Xie Lian felt similarly. (And now we consider all the crisis he might have endured and all the ways in which Yin Yu may have tried to push Jian Shi away after their banishment. Ah, is this a new wip I’m sensing. Or perhaps an already existent one that I need to work on… :sweats:)
In short: in both Xie Lian and Yin Yu’s case there’s a strong element of ”WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE?!” when they look to their friends still holding out a hand for them (literally, for Quan Yizhen and Feng Xin), defending them (as Jian Shi did, until Yin Yu yelled at everyone else to please shut up), refusing to go truly away (as Mu Qing came back, because he never intended to leave them all for good).
In my personal opinion, after all the things both Xie Lian and Yin Yu went through, the best they could do is to let go of the idea of being a role model of any sort. Not because they’re unworthy of being such a thing, they definitely are worthy, they always were, they always deserved to be up there in the heavens (if only the heavens were a place deserving of them in turn!) But (in my opinion) they need to let go of the weight of expectations that had caused them so much pain and misery.
Xie Lian had worked on that, definitely not in a healthy way, though, by leaning into the laughingstock reputation as he does, or as we can see through his interactions with Lang Qianqiu, where his self–deprecation it’s so painfully evident. Yet he’s still very much someone worthy of respect and of being followed, and constantly shows it even if he doesn’t mean to. It’s just who he is!
Yin Yu on the other hand still clings to those values, also in an unhealthy way that doesn’t let him see his own worth, as we can see through his last words when he dies in Xie Lian’s arms. His perceived lack of worth keeps causing him pain, and won’t let him be proud of his position in Ghost City or acknowledge how competent and reliable he is, how respected by everyone in the city (Hua Cheng included, though I won’t elaborate here). He just can’t see how worthy he is of all that.
Ah, how I need them to heal! (said in the most pathetic watery trembling voice ever) :loud sniffling sounds:
And now I go back… to love.
Because what Quan Yizhen and Jian Shi and Mu Qing and Feng Xin mean for Yin Yu and Xie Lian is that: love. A love that has endured, that has survived, that is still surprisingly there, alive, waiting, even if wounded, even if there’s so much that has to be said to get to a point where it can be acknowledged. But it is there. We don’t get to see the actual resolution of it in detail, but I would fight tooth and nail with anyone who tried to tell me it simply wouldn’t happen under any circumstances. Like, come on!
What is Feng Xin and Mu Qing sending their “junior officials” to help Xie Lian, if not love? What is their constant over–protectiveness over Xie Lian if not love? What is Mu Qing’s gesture of repairing Ruoye in the way he did, if not love? You can argue all you want about the form, but under all that, the very core, is love, is care, is an attempt to go back home. And Xie Lian sees it, and even if he doesn’t know how to cross that distance —there’s so much he can’t say, so much he probably doesn’t want them to know…— he loves them, he knows them, and still welcomes them back into his life. He knows them so well he knew it was them and not any junior officials, from the start.
For Yin Yu, (in my opinion, as we don’t know anything for certain) Jian Shi would be a wound. A painful reminder of his failure, a love that he lost, that he couldn’t keep, couldn’t save. In my mind, Jian Shi sacrificed his life for Yin Yu during their banishment, offering the last he could to repay him from his past mistake. He didn’t die a peaceful death, at the very least, since if that was the case he wouldn't have turned into a resentful spirit (which we canonically know happened). Jian Shi was his best friend and someone he trusted deeply, otherwise, Yin Yu wouldn’t have taken him to the heavens after he ascended. Jian Shi was someone who always saw the best in Yin Yu and that always considered him worthy of godhood, someone who believed in him and wanted to protect him. He was never going to ascend on his own merits (as Xie Lian implies on the flashback about West trio’s story) but he was going to follow Yin Yu to the very end of the world. I think that Yin Yu would always wonder: what if I had forced him to go away? (just like Feng Xin would always wonder what if I had stayed with him?) I think Yin Yu visits his grave and holds a big space for Jian Shi in his heart, forever. Not only out of guilt, but out of genuine grief (and what is grief if not that love that doesn’t have a place to go anymore, right?) I think Yin Yu would always miss him. I think Jian Shi would always be tied to what home means for Yin Yu. (And an extra very personal thought: JianYin were each other “last blue spring”)
The love that Quan Yizhen represents is a scarier one for Yin Yu. His devotion is just as absolute, but Quan Yizhen demands answers from him. Quan Yizhen is the mirror where he can either see himself to find himself inferior, or choose to try to be his better self and move on. (Doesn’t that remind you of Xie Lian and Mu Qing, by the way?) Quan Yizhen is a test to his values, his self–image and the meaning of his existence in the future. You can’t pretend they would eternally stay away and never confront the elephant in their room (well, you can, but that’s so boring and leaves aside who they are as characters so I frankly can’t understand why you would do that). By this I don’t mean you need to ship them, I mean that Quan Yizhen will be trying to mend their relationship, and that a big part of Yin Yu’s healing relies on him being able to be honest to his shidi so that they can clean the air and understand each other, see each other for who they are, and have a healthy relationship in whatever shape or form it takes in the future.
Because also: what was Yin Yu’s own sacrifice of his life to save Quan Yizhen, if not love? What was his gesture of protecting him when he was turned into a budaoweng, if not love? Yes, Yin Yu has tons of conflicting feelings about Quan Yizhen, but that love always prevailed, despite everything else and no matter what anyone else thought or what Yin Yu said to himself.
Which is valid for both trios, in the end. No matter what others thought, how long it has been, and the insane pile of elephants in the room… The love is also there, and always shines through.

Plant life had slowly made its claim over the temple, with grass growing between the hardwood flooring. The walls had several holes, some worryingly big, and glycine vines had started to grow over them, clinging to the crumbling walls of one side of the temple, somehow making it look less sad, less lifeless.
And of course, the huge stone altar was still there, and on top of it, a divine statue stood tall and proud, even while holding a broken sword and with varying degrees of damage on its structure.
The glycine vines had also reached the statue, already flowering around its hair, and some petals were scattered around, giving the altar an ethereal quality. Like it was just another offering for the god it portrayed, and not just a coincidence. Like the whole surroundings still held love for it. Like this place was embracing its god.
This one is a special gift for @sobanvallion and it's also inspired by one of her artworks that you can find here >:D
Took me a while to make the promo post because I was so sleepy the whole day that i was barely functioning BUT NOW I AM ALIVE AGAIN. I don't like the graphic but it is what it is. i tried. i redid this a thousand times and only made it worse so. yeah. honestly i should stop making the promo posts.
i hope whoever reads finds it fun! it was both silly and quite horny and i always love writing any kind of interactions between hua cheng and quan yizhen XD

For some artists, showing their sketches means revealing a rather vulnerable side of themselves.
That’s how I feel.
But from your perspective, maybe it might be fun to see where I start and where I’m going! So I wanted to share this with you :)
And maybe one day I’ll feel more comfortable with my creative process 🫶
Normally, most of the sketches can be found as finished drawings on my various social media accounts ;) (tumblr or bluesky)

Since there's quite a bit of time remaining before the darker and spookier autumn months, this is an interest check for a possible HeHuaYin Week 2026 (platonic and romantic).
Given the size of the HeHuaYin community, the event isn't aimed at a large audience and will most likely be hosted even with a very small number of respondents, so this form is mostly for determining the prompts and time period.
The link to the interest check's Google Form is over here
I FINISHED THE AUTISTIC CHARACTER MONTH CHALLENGE!
final word count: 49655 words (!!!!)
Link to the series on AO3 HERE
honestly i still feel quite insane and the adhd won't even give me a sense of real accomplishment LMAO. idk how i did this but i do know why i did it. and i'm glad i decided to do it.
i had (and still have, tbh) too many ideas in store about them all and especially about the autism/nd coded way in which some characters are written. this challenge was a perfect opportunity to explore those ideas without overcomplicating myself as i tend to do.
predictably i focused a lot on quan yizhen because i am the ceo of autistic quan yizhen, but i also felt brave and threw my audhd xie lian in there + my autistic+ocd yin yu. i wrote poetry and also wrote a very experimental thing that made my brain wither while proofreading but was worth it. i got to write about my beloved west trio.
when my spoons replenish i will actually proofread things (i know that there must be plenty of typos and weird stuff since this was all done without a beta and forcing myself to not overthink) and also add proper summaries for all the fics, probably also add stuff in the notes since i always love to yap (but this time, the more i posted the guiltier i felt for posting so much so i guess i didn't want to be perceived) (but i still want people to read my stuff... yeah i know my brain makes zero sense).
it was an excellent writing exercise and i truly feel it got easier for me to get the words out the more i kept going :'D
anyways! i have to especially extra super thank @tinysobek and @sobanvallion for their constant encouragement and support through their comments. and @thelinbean for helping me with many of the plot elements whenever i got stuck. even if you can't actually beta my works you always help me so much. i would have given up on this challenge on like, day 9 if not for you three ;u; and of course, last but not least: all my love and thanks to the organizers of @autistic-character-month for giving us all a chance to explore canon, headcanon and original autistic characters, and open the conversations in fandom about ND characters ⸜(。˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝♡ the prompts were amazing! thank you for all your hard work <3
i hope whoever reads any of the works i shared this month gets to smile and also to think a bit more about autism and autistic people outside the usual stereotypes and assumptions. there's so much to learn and explore!
