CAN MOLLY RECOGNISE HER, she wonders. feels splintered like a mirror broken into shards, too many reflections looking back at her, all a little warped, all a little wrong. hasn’t quite figured out yet how to climb back into her body yet. when she closes her eyes, she’s back in emon, and sometimes when caleb gets too close the scent of magic lingering on him is almost enough to break her. maybe there’s not coming back from that. not when five years of her life passed for everyone else in seconds.
it’s easier to blame all this on the city. she remembers, after all, the horror of it, even after facing dragons and monsters and death. can almost trick herself into believing it’s true maybe, that it all was a very strange dream, but she feels shaun tethered to her soul like a grasping hand, memories that both are and are not her own in her head, making her dizzy.
she has changed so much. she has changed so much. where does that leave her ?? you’re here now, they say, and she has to swallow back the guilt, because part of her wishes she wasn’t.
❝ yeah … yeah, i’m here. ❞ closes her eyes under the warmth of their kiss, fingers holding on tight to his shirt, and tries her best not to feel like a traitor, or an impostor stealing another jester’s friends away from her.
sniffles, one hand wiping away the tears, and then she’s smiling again, easy like slipping into an old sweater. ❝ but we’re gonna stop it, and then save the world, and everything will be alright after that, right ?? ❞
“ Right. And if there’s another world-ending debacle, then someone else can handle it. I think we’ve had enough of saving the world. “
That had never been a part of the plan. At least, not for them. Joining this band of people that had formed out of the chaos that was the circus disbanding, they had really only been looking for a good time and an excuse to keep moving. Maybe one day make enough coin to come back and get Gustav out of the mess they’d put him in. Maybe join him again. Could they do that again?
Maybe. Maybe after a long nap, or an extended stay at the Clays. Essek mentions gardening offhandedly, like it’s a joke, but -- maybe that would be good for them, to bury their hands in the dirt and make something new. Repeat the cycle they’d started by accident somehow. There’ll be time for that later.
There’ll be time for her to tell them, if she ever decides to, what she saw in that moment. Why she feels different, just a touch more distant than before. None of them were coming out of this without changes; only fools walk a path like this thinking they could stay the same. For better or for worse they’re all different now, Jester included. And yet she still tries to light the dark with joy.
Mollymauk’s smile is somber but warm as they look down at her, move her to the rhythm of music unheard. “ I think...once this is over, we should band together with Caleb. Save a litter of cats or two. What do you think, Blue? “
