Using your time wisely

Ibrahim ibn Adham (d.100 AH) went to visit a person who was sick, and found him crying. When asked why he was crying, he said:

“Because of the days that passed and I didn’t fast, and the nights that passed and I didn’t stand in prayer.”

Humbleness

A man came to Shaykh Ahmad ar-Rifa'i once and said:

“Who is better, you or this dog?”

Shaykh Ahmad replied:

“If I cross the Sirat, then I am better.”

Upon seeing the humbleness of Shaykh Ahmad, the man and his entire family accepted Islam.

Contentment

Out of extreme hunger, the Prophet (ﷺ) used to tie stones to his stomach.

Even though Allah gave him the choice for the valleys of Makkah to be turned into gold for him, he replied:

“No Jibril, some days I’m fed, and some days I’m hungry.”
