It's the first thing Sirius says as he walks into the third year boys dorm room, and James shoots straight up in bed, shocked, as Peter lets out a yelp of laughter. Remus has a look on his face like he'd rather be anywhere but here.
James recovers first. "Uh, mate? Not that I mind discussing these things, but...that's a real conversation starter at ten at night on a Wednesday."
Sirius shrugs, flopping into bed. "McKinnon broke it off with me because she's a 'lesbian.' I'm, like, cool with it, but what IS that, you know? Like is she telling me she's into feet or some shit?"
Peter's crying laughing, and James has to take a moment to remind himself that Sirius's family is full of shit people who haven't educated him about anything.
"Sorry she broke up with you, mate. That, uh, sucks," Remus pipes up, finally speaking after breathing several deep breaths.
"Ah, nah, it's not a big deal. She was great at snogging, but I think we're fine as friends," Sirius shrugs. "But what's--"
"Lesbians are birds who date birds," James answers bluntly, because Effie'd explained the term to him long ago, and he's very educated on these matters.
"They scissor and stuff," Peter adds knowledgably, face serious for only a moment before he smirks.
"Wait–what?" Sirius asks, eyes wide.
"Scissor! I think that's when two girls kiss while cutting each others' hair, you know? To look pretty, or whatever," Peter explains.
"Nah, mate, that's when--"
But Sirius is, evidently, not paying attention. "No, like–girls can date girls?" he clarifies, eyes wide. "That's allowed? I thought it was, like, illegal?"
And the room is silent for a long time, before James says simply, "Yeah, Pads. S'like, a thing."
It's then that he notices how quiet Remus is.
And how Sirius's eyes have gone huge, and how he keeps looking directly at Remus, his face bright red and full of longing.
Well that's interesting, isn't it?
