Explanation for tumblr newbies:

unlike other sites, tumblr 'punishes' you for being popular

the punishment comes in the form of thousands of like/reblog notifications flooding your dashboard, rendering it unusable

sometimes the popularity is fleeting and the storm of notifications die off in days or weeks

sometimes you hit World Heritage Post™ status (not a real thing) and you get notifications for years and years

desperate popular tumblr users have, in the past, tried to cope with this by deleting the original post

which DOES silence the notification storm

but DOES NOT delete all the reblogged versions in the wild

(it's complicated)

but anyway

the "mute" option depicted above is tumblr staff's attempt at making things nicer for people whose posts go viral
