Learning Chinese is weird because it has really forced me to get into the mindset of just using Chinese to communicate rather than translating to and from English in order to communicate. When I first learned Russian or German this was fine, at least at first. I could think of something to say in English and then translate it into the language, because these languages share enough similarities with English.

It’s a bad habit you need to abandon to obtain full fluency, but it works at first. Chinese is completely different though, there are so many times I’ve found myself not translating Chinese into English or vice versa because it’s such a difficult language that it’s worth it from the get go to think in meaning rather than in words.

I went to a Chinese world in vrchat today and just lurked, listening to conversations. Eventually I met someone who asked to practice their English and we talked about music and stuff.

Another big thing is that I’m at the stage with Chinese where I’m reading really simple books or watching shows aimed at 4-6 year olds. It’s a bit weird but there’s one show, 喜羊羊 (happy sheep, although this is a shortening of the full title, pleasant sheep and big wolf) which seems to occupy the same cultural space as bluey, I’ve laughed at it a few times despite not fully understanding the language and it being a kid’s show.
