An eternal curse which goes on and on like a ring, “Ringu” is a nightmarish Japanese horror film, one which mutes screams.

Reiko Asakawa, a journalist, investigates the death of her niece. The death is a mysterious one, there are rumors about a cursed tape which kills its viewers withing a week and the coffin is a closed one to hide the corpse.

Ringu employs the efficient technique of patiently springing it on you. It's scary how easily Asakawa finds the malicious tape. Even when she borrowed the tape, right until she played it, I didn't believe it would be the real deal. Unfortunately for our protagonist, it was.

Like previous cases, Asakawa receives a silent phone call and is now on a literal one week deadline. She goes to the only person she can, her ex-husband, to help her. He is cynic of the tape but watches it anyway and helps her. Instead of a phone call he sees the feet of a woman while in a park.

The tape is scary but doesn't offer much of a clue. A well. An eye. Sada.

Another testimony to its brilliance is how Ringu keeps playing the audience until the very end. Scary shit keeps happening in succession in the last quarter of the movie and even the ending scene is a countdown.

Watch how a beautiful island becomes a red bloodbath, a royal battle indeed.

Forty students are captured under the BR Act of the Japanese Government and confined to an island where there former teacher Kitano is revealed to be the one behind its execution and instructs them about the Act.

When the stakes are life and death, how far will a human go to save themself?

Quite far it seems.

Battle Royale is a grotesque, violent and brilliant action thriller infused with dark comedy.

At its core is the message that life is basically a battle royale of sorts, in its own way it is as gruesome and dark as this battle.

In the BR, everyone is provided with their own supplies to last a while and one random weapon. This moment was one of my favorites in the movie.

Even in life, everyone is granted with a “weapon,” and not everyone gets a fair deal. Make use of what you have and just survive. Fight for yourself with what you have.
