Had a busy weekend staying in my pajamas and sewing. I took a break from the bigger projects to use up a few scraps and try out a few ideas on these wallets. Â

Another thing that Iâve found ⊠[is that] women who write, who have children, their work tends to get âdisappeared.â Theyâre not quite respectable. The few women who are counted part of the great canon of English literature tend to be childless and often unmarried. ⊠I have to say, the men seem to prefer it that way.

Itâs a small world after all. Containing bacteria, algae, and tiny shrimp, this ecosphere was sealed in 1999 and hasnât been opened since: itâs a self-sustaining habitat. How does it work? Algae make food from sunlight. Shrimp take oxygen from the water and exhale carbon dioxide; algae take in CO2 and give off O2. Microbes feed the shrimpâand the CO2-rich shrimp poop helps the algae and microbes! The idea of a closed, self-sustaining ecosystem shouldnât be too strange, because youâre living in one: Earth. See the ecosphere in the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Hall of the Universe.

This page from Drawing Papers 78 features LâHomme XXVI: Hallucinations, Arture 385 created with handmade pigments and ink on paper by YĂŒksel Arslan in 1988.
The 2008 exhibition YĂŒksel Arslan: Visual Interpretations presented a 50 year survey of Arslanâs work, providing an intimate glimpse into his thinking, interests, and obsessions. For many decades, Arslan mined  the depths of the unconscious mind, bringing together Western and Eastern aesthetics and philosophy in finely wrought works that he calls âArturesâ. Serial in format, the hundreds of drawings he produced dealt with subjects as varied as schizophrenia and the eroticism of de Sade, Bataille, and Artaud, as well as visual interpretations of artists, poets, writers, scientists, musicians, and philosophers that have influenced his thinking. Arslanâs working process included the use of self-made and antique tools and the production of his own colors using ancient methods of combining raw pigments with his own saliva, blood, urine, and other organic materials like honey, earth, and egg whites.
The Drawing Papers are a series of publications documenting The Drawing Centerâs exhibitions and public programs and providing a forum for the study of drawing. For more information on Drawing Papers 78  please click here.

The textile work of Sabine Feliciano may recall a past biology class for some, as her âdissectionsâ of animals play with the vibrant and textural possibilities of the form. See more on HiFructose.com.
âThe skin for me, thatâs where my career kind of started. The skin was an access point. I started drawing in this patterned style back in 2004 and all I wanted to doânot really thinking a lot about race but it became raceâwas this idea of âWhat does skin feel like?â when youâre defined by something. I came to the U.S. when I was five years old from Nigeria and had no knowledge of American history and was crash-coursed into it."âToyin Ojih Odutola
