Sorry the lack of posts recently- exams are finally over and I don’t have anything to show you because of it.

I’m still going to start my college journey this coming August, and I’m starting it with a course that was just an option on my application form. I was unable to pave my way to my chosen course (a lot of ppl were fighting for a slot in psych). I still have to switch courses asap when the 2nd sem starts. I’m kinda scared I might chicken out, because during my shs time (as it was just recently implemented) the school I was in was soo time consuming, whether I plan my schedule or not it still didn’t matter because everything was on the spot, it was like everyday burnout. Damn, you would honestly feel like your a lab rat for the deped. To be honest, I don’t like learning that way, you know, bombarded by stuffs. I just hope I can (somehow) give myself time to enjoy my classes when I’m in college. (I’m shifting frong English language studies to psychology at Cavite State University, tmi :> )

First of all, good luck with college! You can do it and don’t give up! I personally think it’s important to have a college degree (especially here in our country), so that in a way you’d have a back up plan. I know titles and diplomas aren’t a guarantee that you’re gonna be successful, but it pretty much matters here if you want a good job. I hope you don’t get the impression that we all could just stop school and follow our heart. My problem is law school or grad school. I still urge you to get that degree. 😊

For my college degree, I wanted to take up Information Design in ADMU, but I didn’t pass the entrance exam. I couldn’t find a similar course here in Cebu, which led me to my back up option which was Business Management. I hope that you don’t get discouraged to follow what you really want. I have a lot of friends who shifted from different courses too because it’s not what they wanted. College or education is not a race. As long as you’re learning and growing as a person, then that’s good enough.

I’d always remind myself to face problems one step at a time. Whenever I’m worried about something in the future, I’d tell myself to stop worrying about something that has not yet happened, and focus on the present. Sooner or later, when that problem comes, it might not be that much of a problem anymore.

I might not be familiar with your curriculum, but I’ve heard your frustrations from my cousins and friends as well, and I do feel bad that you students are the ones really affected of the lack of research and ineffectiveness of the K-12 program. But what is important is that you made it through! Do not think that your shs experience would be the same as your college journey, because there’s no assurance that it’s the same. Think of it as a new challenge and a new journey with new environment. Be optimistic about it and try to look for ways to make you feel excited about college. Although I did not experience shs, I think college is going to be way different. Good luck and God bless! Don’t forget to enjoy the journey!

There are a few posts going around tumblr that have hundreds of thousands of notes and talk about torrents that you can go to for textbooks.

My advice?

Don’t.

Those are illegal.

I hate to be the stick in the mud here, but yeah, those are illegal.

And seeing as how a lot of you will be logged onto your college server and they can see any website that you go on, I wouldn’t recommend it. You might have your internet privileges revoked. Or face disciplinary actions. Is it worth it?

Besides, a ton of those websites are filled with viruses.

So, you may have saved a few hundred dollars on a textbook but now you need to buy a new computer and are facing consequences from the school.

I know that textbooks are outrageously expensive. And I hate it. But it’s not worth the trouble to try and illegally obtain them.

So, what would I recommend?

Talk to your professor. They might have a few extra textbooks for you to use.

Go to your college library. I worked in the library at my old college for a year and we had an entire shelf of textbooks that students could rent for two hours.

Put up a bulletin board where students can sell their old books and see if someone’s selling the book that you need.

Ask your professor if you can get the an older edition of a book. They’re usually a lot cheaper.

Here are five LEGAL websites that I would recommend:

amazon.com - Not only do they rent books, they also sell used books. I’ve found some really great deals before.

textbookrush.com - Again, they sell used books. I once got a $300 book for $35.

chegg.com - I know a lot of students who use this.

bookbyte.com - I also know a lot of students who use this.

bigwords.com - This website compares prices for books.
