Temptation at Home Part 1
Synopsis: Returning home for the holidays, Y/n finds herself face to face with Michele, her step dad, where familiar touches, lingering glances, and quiet moments ignite a heat neither of them can resist.
Pairing: Michele x Reader
I tossed another sweater into the suitcase. Packing shouldn't have felt this hard, it wasn't like it was moving across the world, just going home for the holidays. Still, it felt heavier than it should've.
The house had been different ever since Mom left for her job overseas, I hasn't been back much, not since then. It wasn't just the travel or the time, it was.. everything else. Michele had been alone there for almost a year now and even thinking about walking through that front door again made something twist in my chest.
The room was quiet except for the faint hum of my phone vibrating against the nightstand, I reached for it and saw Mom's name glowing on the screen.
" Hi Mom. " I said, tucking the phone between my shoulder and ear while I folded another shirt.
" Hi sweetheart " She said, her voice soft but distant, a faint echo behind " You packing? "
" Trying to. " I said glancing at the half done suitcase " Kind of forgot how cold it gets back there. "
She laughed, the sound warm enough to melt something small and frozen inside me " Michele's been saying the same thing. I think the heaters acting up again. "
" Of course it is. " I muttered.
There was a pause, the kind that felt like she was choosing her words " He's been by himself too long. I know he won't admit it, but it's been hard on him. You being there for the holidays will mean a lot. "
" Yeah, I figured. " I said.
" I wish I could be home. " She added after a moment " Christmas never feels right when we're apart. "
I didn't know what to say to that, I just looked at my suitcase, at the half folded clothes and said " I'll make sure everything's okay. Don't worry. "
The call ended a few minutes later and the silence that followed felt heavier than before, I sat there for a while, staring at the open suitcase, finished packing, zipped it closed, sat bacn on tbe bed and letting a low sigh.
Tomorrow, I'd be there again, in the house that somehow never stopped smelling like pinewood, coffee and his cologne. Even after all this time, it still lingered in my memory, faint but impossible to forget.
I leaned back on the bed, staring at the ceiling, I told myself it was kiss a grip home for the holidays. Just family. Just.. normal. But even the thought of seeing him again made my stomach twist in a way I couldn't explain.
He came into our lives when everything was falling apart, Mom was exhausted, trying to balance too much at once, and I remember thinking how strange it was that this man could somehow make the entire house feel calmer just by walking into it.
Michele had that kind of presence. Steady. Grounded. The kind of man who never raised his voice, never lost control. He fixed things, the broken cabinet, the tension that always hung in the air when Mom was too tired to smile. He didn't juat fixed the house. He fixed us.
I respected him for that. Maybe even admired him and for a long time, that was all it was. Simple. Safe.
But somewhere between the quiet mornings and the late dinners, the small moments started to feel.. different. The way he'd look at me sometimes, just for a second too long, or how his hand would brush mine when we passed each something at the table. It was nothing. Alwahs nothing. Yet somehow, it still made my heart beat a little too fast.
I told myself I was imagining it. That it was just the way he was, polite, attentive and gentle. But sometimes when he'd smile, slow and thoughtful, I couldn't help but wonder if he knew.
I couldn't stop thinking about what it would be like to see him again. Would it feel the same as before? That strange mix of comfort and tension that never seemed to settle? Or had time dulled it, made it easier to breathe around him?
I hope so, because the last thing I wanted was for it all to come rushing back, that flutter in my chest, that heat that made no sense.
I turned off the lamp beside my bed and laid back, but sleep didn't come easily, my mind kept wandering, tracing old memories, the sound of his voice calling me from the kitchen, the way his laughter filled the house, low and warm. It had always been a sound that made me feel safe, even eyes I didn't want to admit it.
When I finally drifted off, it was to the thought of him opening the door, that small, familiar smile tugging at his mouth as if nothing bad changed at all.
The next morning came too fast, the alarm went off, soft and distant, and for a few seconds I just laid there, staring at the ceiling, trying to quiet the restless pulse under my skin, my suitcase sat by the door, heat and ready, a silent reminder that I didn't have a reason to stall anymore.
I stood there in front of the gate looking at the house, it looked the same as it always had, the dark wood, the faint smoke curling from the chimney, even from where I'm standing I could almost smell it. Pinewood, coffee and that faint trace of something I'd never been able to forget.
My heart was pounding harder than it should've been, I opened the gate, walked over to the front door, rang the doorbell, before I could convince myself to breathe, the door opened, Michele stood there with one hand in his coat pocket and the other hand holding a hug.
He looked almost exactly as I remembered, tall, broad shouldered, hair tousled like he'd run a hand through it. There was a faint scruff along his jaw, when he saw me, he smiled. That slow, effortless smile that made the cold air feel warmer than it should have.
" Y/n. You're here. " He said, his voice deep and rough from the morning.
I smiled and said " Hey. "
He studied me for a moment, the way he always did, like he was trying to read what I wasn't saying, then he smiled, softer this time and said " You look good. "
The words caught somewhere between my chest and throat and said " Thanks. You too. "
He took the suitcase before I could reach for it and said " Come on in, it's freezing out here. "
When I stepped inside, warmth rushed around me instantly, the familiar scent hit me all at once, pinewood, coffee and him. The house hadn't changed, the same framed photos on the wall, the same dark furniture, even the faint hum of the heater that never worked quite right.
He set my suitcase on the floor, looked at me and said " You hungry? I was just making breakfast. "
I nod my head, followed him to the kitchen, telling myself the nervous flutter in my stomach was just from the drive, but when he held my gaze over his shoulder for a second too long, I wasn't sure I believed it anymore.
The kitchen looked almost exactly the same too, sunlight spilling faint and pale across the counters, the familiar smell of coffee and toasted bread clinging to the air. Michele moved easily around the space, sleeves pushed up, his movements calm, unhurried, like nothing had changed at all.
I sat at the table, fingers tracing the edge of the wooden surface, the same place I used to sit every morning before school ( high school ), everything felt both familiar and distant, like walking into a dream I wasn't sure I'd woken from yet.
" You still take your coffee the same? " He asked, glancing over his shoulder at me.
He smiled, a small, knowing thing that made my stomach tighten " Didn't forget. "
The sound of the spoon clinking against the mug filled the silence, steady and rhythmic, when he finally set it down in front of me, our fingers brushed for half a second. Just that, a touch so small it shouldn't have meant anything, but I felt it anyway.
" Thanks. " I said quietly.
He nod his head, leaning back against the counter, crossing his arms and said " How's school? "
I wrapped both hands around the mug for warmth and said " Busy, but it's fine. Same as always. "
" Still studying architecture? "
" Yeah, still trying to figure out if I'm actually good at it or just too stubborn to quit. "
He let out a low laugh and said " You've always been stubborn. That's not new. "
" I remember everything. "
The words came out low, softer than before and for a second the air between us changed. Not in a way I could explain, just heavier. He didn't look away and neither did I.
Something inside me twisted, that familiar warmth, that pull I thought I'd grown out of. It was the same feeling that used to sneak up on me when he'd smile across the dinner table, or when his voice dropped low enough that it almost felt like a secret.
I cleared my throat, breaking the silence first and said " Mom said the heaters still acting up. "
" She's right. I keep saying I'll fix it, but the damn things ancient. You might have to sleep with extra blankets. "
" That's fine. " I said, taking a sip of coffee " I kind of missed how cold it gets here. "
He tilted his head slightly, watching me with that unreadable expression " You missed this place? "
I nod my head slowly and said " Yeah. More than I expected to. "
" Good. It's not the same without you here. "
The words landed deeper than they should have, settling somewhere warm and unsteady in my chest, I looked down at my coffee, but I could still feel his gaze which is steady and heavy, like he was waiting for me to look back and when I finally did, his eyes didn't move.
For a second, neither of us said anything, the clock ticked softly in the background, the faint hiss of the pan on the stove is the only sound between us, I felt like if I breathed too loud, it would break something fragile hanging in the air.
Michele's gaze lingered just long enough to make my pulse race, then he turned back to the counter, breaking the spell, he grabbed the pan, slid a few eggs onto a plate and said casually " You still don't like the yolks runny, right? "
I blinked, a little thrown by how easily he remembered " Right. " I said, smiling faintly.
He nod his head, setting the plate in front of me with a quiet sort of care, like it mattered to him that it was right.
He just hummed, the sound low in his throat, and poured himself more coffee, grabbed his plate, sat down next to me and said " Feels strange. "
" What does? " I said and ate.
" Having someone else here again. The house gets too quiet sometimes. "
I poked my eggs, trying not to look up and said " You could've called. You know I would've visited sooner. "
I looked at him, he smiled and said " You've got your own life now. I didn't want to pull you away from it. "
" Still, you didn't have to go through all of this alone. "
" I got used to it. But.. I'm glad you're here now. "
" You must be tired from the drive. Go unpack, I'll bring your suitcase upstairs. "
He shook his head and said firmly but kind " Go on. You're a guest now. "
I wanted to argue but the way he said it left no space for that, so I just nod my head, stood up and carried my mug with me through the familiar hall, when I reached to my old room, I hesitated in the doorway. It was exactly the same, the pale curtains, the small desk under the window.
But there was small changes too. The bed was made neatly, fresh sheets, a folded blanket at the foot, I set the mug down and sat on the edge of the bed, my chest tightening with something I couldn't name.
A soft knock pulled me away from my thoughts, I turned to Michele who stood there with my suitcase in hand and he said " Didn't mean to startle you. "
He set the suitcase down near the dresser, looked around for a moment and said " I aired out your room yesterday. Figured it might be a little stuffy. "
He nod his head, his eyes finding mine and said " Didn't want you to come home to dust. "
There it was again, that warmth under his tone that made it hard to breathe.
" Thank you. " I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
He lingered in the doorway for a little longer before he said " Dinner is at seven. I'll let you rest till then. "
I nod my head, he left the room, the moment the door closed, I exhaled like I'd been holding my breath the entire time, as soon as the sound of his footsteps faded down the hall, I let myself fall back onto the bed, the mattress dipped softly beneath me, the faint scent of detergent filled my nose.
Everything here felt too familiar like time had paused, waiting for me to return. My eyes trailed along the ceiling, tracing the small cracks that hadn't changed since I was sixteen. For a moment, I let the quiet wrap around me. It wasn't peaceful though, it wss the kind of quiet that make you notice every heartbeat, every thought you'd tried to bury.
I turned my head toward the window, the snow outside had started to fall thicker, soft and heavy coating the trees in white. I used to love watching it.
I got out of bed, walked over to my suitcase, opened it and began to unpack. A few minutes later, the door knocked and I said " Come in. "
The door opened and I heard " Y/n? "
I looked at him and said " Yeah? "
He leaned against the door frame, not stepping inside and said " I'm heading into town to grab a few things for dinner. You need anything? "
I shook my head and said " No, I'm good. Thanks. "
He nod his head, smiled and said " Alright. I'll be back soon. "
The house had settled into a quiet rhythm while I sat on the couch, phone in hand, scrolling through the messages I didn't feel like replying to. The soft light from the living room lamp cast a warm glow over the familiar armchair Michele always liked to sink into, the coffee table still perfectly aligned with the couch.
I traced the edge of my phone with my thumb, I tucked my legs under me and let out a quiet sigh, trying to pull away the small tension that had settled in my chest since I'd arrived. It was silly, he was just Michele, after all, just.. home.
The soft click of the front door downstairs made my stomach flutter unexpectedly, I lifted my head just as I heard the faint jingle of keys being set down. He was back.
" Y/n? " His voice carried through the hall, low and easy, but even without seeing him, the sound made my chest tighten.
" Hey. " I called back, setting my phone on the coffee table.
I stood up, smoothing the front of my sweater as if that could steady the sudden rush of nerves, the footsteps grew closer, Michele appeared in the doorway to the living room carrying two grocery bags.
" Got everything we need for tonight. " He said as he walked to the kitchen, setting the bags down carefully on the kitchen counter, he looked up at me, the same calm steady gaze that had always unnerved me in the best way " You settling in okay? "
I nod my head, fingers brushing the edge of the couch as I sat back down and said " Yeah.. it's good. Feels like.. like I never left. "
He smiled, pulling out some items from the bags and said " Good. That's the point, isn't it? Home for the holidays. "
I watched him for a moment, the way he moved with such natural ease, the quiet attention he gave to even the smallest task, I felt a strange tug in my chest, the same flutter from earlier, the one I didn't want to name.
He glanced up at me again, catching my gaze, gave a small nod and said " Relax. Go ahead, get comfortable. I'll take care of dinner prep. "
I got off the couch, smoothing my sweater as I walked toward the kitchen, Michele glanced up from the counter, his gaze steady and calm.
" Do you mind if I help? " I asked, trying to keep my voice casual.
Michele turned toward me, his brows lifting slightly as if the idea surprised him and said " Help? "
" Yeah. I've been living off instant noodles and cafeteria food for months. I kind of missed the smell of real food cooking. "
He let out a small laugh, the sound low and familiar and said " You make it sound like I'm running a five star restaurant. "
" You kind of do. " I teased, stepping closer to where he'd set the grocery bags and said " What are you making? "
He pulled out a few vegetables, setting them neatly on the counter and said " Soup. Your Mom's recipe. "
That made me pause and said " Mom's soup? The one she used to make whenever it snowed? "
He nod his head, glancing up at me and said " That's the one. She wrote it down for me before she left. Said it would make the house smell like home. "
Something in my chest tightened at that and said " I haven't had it in forever. "
" Then it's time you learned. " He said, his tone gentle and said " Here. "
He handed me a knife and a few carrots, the touch of his fingers brushing mine for a brief second, too light to mean anything, too deliberate not to notice, I tried to ignore the warmth that lingered where his skin met mine
" Start with these. Slice them thin. Not too thin that they fall apart, but thin enough to cook evenly. "
" You sound like you've practiced that line. "
He looked amused and said " Maybe I have. Your Mom used to hover whenever I cooked. She said I chopped too slow. "
I laughed softly, grabbing a cutting board and said " That sounds like her. "
The rhythm of the knife against the wooden cutting board filled the quiet, soft and steady, the air warmed with the faint scent of garlic and herbs as he started prepping the rest, I could feel him near me, the way his movements always carried an easy confidence, there was something grounding about it, about him.
" Be careful with the knives. I wouldn't forgive myself if you hurt yourself the first night back. "
Before I could say anything, he reached past me to grab a handful of parsley, his arm brushing mine " Sorry. " He murmured, voice low enough that it felt like it landed directly against my skin.
" It's fine. " I said, though my pulse betrayed me.
We worked in silence for a few minutes, the kind that wasn't uncomfortable but heavy in it's own way, the pot simmered quietly on the stove, steam rising and curling in the soft light.
" She always used to hum when she made this. That same song, over and over.. "
I smiled, still chopping and said " She used to do it when she cleaned, too. I asked her about it once. She said it was just something she heard her Mother sing when she was little. "
He hummed softly, thoughtful and said " It suited her. Soft, but.. constant. Like her. "
I glanced up at him, something about the way he said it making my chest tighten again, his expression was distant but tender, his gaze fixed on the pot as if he was seeing her in the steam.
I looked back down at the carrots and said " She'd like that you kept making it. "
He glanced at me, his eyes warm and unreadable and said " I didn't make it just for her. "
That line lingered in the air a little too long, I didn't know what to say, so I focused on chopping, on pretending my hands weren't suddenly trembling.
When the vegetables were ready, he gestured for me to bring them over and said " Careful. It's hot. "
I leaned closer, tipping the board into the pot, the scent hit immediately. Rich both, garlic, onions, a hint of bay leaves, it was exactly like I remembered, only stronger, deeper somehow.
" It smells amazing. " I murmured.
He smiled faintly, stirring slowly and said " You remember what she said about soup? "
" That it fixes everything. "
He looked at me, that small soft, knowing smile in his eyes and said " Yeah. She really believed that. "
We both fell quiet again, that kind of quiet that felt safe but fragile, like one wrong word might shatter it, the soup bubbled between us, a soft rhythm that filled the kitchen with warmth.
After a while, he handed me a small spoon and said " Taste it. "
I hesitated, then took a sip, the heat bloomed against my tongue, familiar and perfect in a way that made my throat tighten.
" It's.. It's exactly how I remembered. "
He leaned a little closer, his voice dropping " Better? "
My breath caught and said " Maybe. "
He smiled again, that slow curve that always seemed to linger and said " Don't tell your Mom. "
" I won't, but she'd be proud you remembered. "
" I didn't forget. " He said quietly, eyes lingered on me for a second too long " I never forget the things that matter. "
Something in his tone made my pulse raced, the air between us thickened, charged with something that felt dangerous familiar.
I turned back to the stove, pretending to focus on the steam rising from the pot and said " So.. what's next? "
He cleared his throat, reaching for a wooden spoon " Now we let it simmer. " His voice was calm again, steady " Takes time for everything to come together. "
I nod my head, watching the slow swirl of the broth and said " Guess some things are worth waiting for. "
He looked at me and said " Yes, they are. "
The soup had been simmering for almost an hour, filling the kitchen with the kind of scent that wrapped around you and refused to let go, every few minutes, Michele would lift the lid, stir gently and taste it. Watching him do even that felt oddly intimate, the way his brow furrowed slightly, the slow exhale as he decided whether it needed more salt.
When he finally turned off the stove, he glanced over at me with a smile smile and said softly " Soups done. You can grab the bread, it's on the counter. "
I nod my head, brushing my palms on my jeans before reaching for the warm loaf, the scent of rosemary drifting upward. The kitchen light was soft, golden, the kind that made everything feel a little slower, and little too quiet.
We sat across from each other at the table, steam rose between us from the bowls, fogging the edges of our spoons, for a moment neither of us spoke.
Then Michele leaned forward slightly and said " It looks just how your Mom made it. "
" Smells like it too. " I said, staring down at the bowl " It's weird.. how much a smell can take you back. "
He nod his head, his gaze gentle and said " Yeah. The house feels different when someone's here. Feels alive again. "
Something in my chest tugged, the way he said it, low, almost like a confession, made it hard to look at him, I spooned some soup just to have something to do with my hands.
" This is really good. " I murmured after a few bites.
His mouth curved into a faint smile and said " You helped. That counts for something. "
That comment shouldn't have made my face warm but it did. I focused on the soup, tracing lazy circles with my spoon, the silence that followed wasn't awkward, it was heavy in the way quiet gets when you're both aware of too much.
He poured us both wine, the motion slow, deliberate, the faint sound of liquid meeting the glass was the only thing breaking the hush between us.
" You've grown up a lot. " He said after a moment, his tone thoughtful rather than casual " Every time I look around you, it surprises me. "
I looked up, meeting his eyes across the table and said " You make it sound like I was a kid yesterday. "
He tilted his head slightly, studying me in that quiet, unreadable way he always had and said " Feels like it sometimes, but then you walk in, it's different. "
Different. The word hung there. I didn't ask what he meant, I didn't have to.
My pulse quickened, I reached for my glass, our fingers brushed when he passed it to me. Not a dramatic touch, just a fleeting spark that neither of us acknowledged out loud but both of us felt it.
He drew his hand back first, clearing his throat lightly, his gaze flicking toward the window where the snow was falling and murmured " It's getting worse out there. You picked the perfect time to come home. "
" Guess I'll be snowed in, then. " I said trying to sound light.
He smiled, not quite teasing, not quite serious and said " Wouldn't be the worst thing. "
That one sentence hit deeper than it should have, I looked away, pretending to watch the snow, but my pulse was drumming hard enough that I could feel it in my throat.
After a while, he stood up, gathering the empty bowls and said " You can sit. I'll take care of these. "
" I can help. " I said quickly, pushing my chair back.
He paused at the sink, glancing over his shoulder with that small smile that somehow felt too gentle to handle and said " You already did. Sit. Rest. "
But I didn't. I walked over anyway, standing beside him as he rinsed the dishes, sleeves rolled up, the muscles in his forearms shifting under the soft light. The smell of soap and soup and something faintly like cedar hung between us.
He glanced sideways at me and said " You really don't know how to stay still, do you? "
I smiled a little and said " Guess not. "
Our eyes met again, close this time, close enough to see the faint gold in his eyes, the way they softened when he looked at me. For a moment, it felt like the while house went quiet, the only sound the faint trickle of water running down the drain.
The last plate was set aside in the drying rack, Michele dried his hands on the towel, looked at me and said " Let's take our wine to the living room. "
We walked over to the dining table, he poured more wine in our glasses, handed me my glass, our fingers brushed briefly, a fleeting touch that sent a subtle warmth through me.
He moved his hand away, grabbed his wine glass, we walked over to the living room, sat down on the couch, close enough that our shoulders touched. The room smelled faintly of pine and lingering herbs from dinner, the fireplace making everything feel slower and warmer.
" To being home. " Michele said lifting his glass.
" To being home. " I replied, clinking my glass against his.
The warmth of the wine spread through me, comforting in a way I hadn't expected. We sat in silence for a few moments and he said " You know.. your Mom used to talk about you all the time. She'd say how determined you were, how curious.. how proud she was of you. "
I smiled softly, swirling the wine in my glass and said " Some things don't really change. "
His eyes steady on mine and said " No, you've grown into someone remarkable. Strong, clever.. and determined in ways that surprised me. Seeing you now.. I can't help but admire you. "
His words carried a weight I hadn't expected, quiet and intimate, more than just admiration. I felt my fingers brushed the stem of my glass, warmth creeping up my arms.
He shifted slightly closer, our hands touched, deliberate, gentle. His thumb brushed lightly across my knuckles, small, fleeting but enough to make my pulse quicken.
" You've always surprised me. Even now, every time I see you, I.. I find myself impressed. You've grown into someone extraordinary. " He murmured.
I swallowed hard, meeting his gaze, there was depth, there a quiet intensity that made my chest tighten, I let my hand hovering near his, fingers brushing lightly, he didn't pull away.
" You really have a way of sneaking up on me. " He said, a faint smile tugging at his lips " Even now, after all this time. "
I felt that familiar flutter, the one I'd tried to ignore and whispered " Maybe I just like being noticed. "
The silence that followed wasn't uncomfortable, it was heavy, intimate in a way words couldn't touch, our closeness, subtle touches, the warmth between us. His hand remained near mine, brushing occasionally, grounding me in a way I hadn't realized I needed.
He leaned slightly closer, our knees brushing and he said with a low and intimate tone " You've made me proud in ways I didn't even know were possible. Seeing you here.. it's more than I expected. More than I could have imagined. "
I felt that flutter in my chest grow, mixing with a warmth I hadn't anticipated, without thinking, I let my fingers inch closer, brushing his, he didn't move.
For the first time that evening, I let myself feel it, the quiet closeness, the warmth, the subtle intimacy between us, wrapped in the comfort of home, the soft glow of the room, and the undeniable pull that lingered between us.
We stayed like that for a moment, my fingers still brushed his, I realized I didn't want to pull away. Somehow, it felt like the most natural thing in the world, sitting here with him, letting the tension of years collapse into this single, quiet closeness.
He shifted slightly, just enough that our knees pressed together, I felt a small spark run through me at the contact, Michele's gaze lingered on my face, steady, warm and I could almost feel the unspoken thoughts behind his eyes, the things neither of us dared to voice.
" You know.. every time you're here, it feels.. right. Like the house finally breathes again. I didn't realize how quiet it felt when you weren't around. "
I smiled softly and said " I missed this, more than I thought I would. "
His hand shifted slightly, brushing against mine again, tbumb tracing a small, lazy circles over over knuckles. The gesture was gentle, but it made my stomach twist and my pulse race, I couldn't help but lean in just a fraction, the warmth of him spilling over like a quiet invitation.
" You've grown into someone incredible. Not just in.. everything you do, but the way you are. You've got this strength, this light.. it's impossible not to notice and it's.. hard not to admire it. You. "
I felt my cheeks flush, my throat tight and said, my voice barely above a whisper " You.. you really mean that? "
He smiled, that slow, knowing smile that always made my heart skip and said " Every word. "
The space between us seemed to shrink without either of us moving, the subtle warmth of his hand on mine, the quiet intimacy of the living room, the soft snow falling outside, it all pressed together, heavy, almost tangible. I felt like I could hear my own heartbeat echoing in my ears.
For a moment, neither of us spoke, we just existed in the quiet, in the closeness, letting the unspoken pull between us settle, and then, almost instinctively, I let my hand shift slightly, brushing the back of his hand, fingertips tracing lightly over his skin, he didn't pull away.
Instead, his gaze softened but intense, I realized I hadn't felt this seen, this understood in a long time. Not just as a friend, not just as family, but in some quiet, intimate way that neither of us had put into words yet.
I sipped my wine, trying to steady my pulse, but the wamrth of the touch, lingered, the silence between us was thick with everything unsaid and even though we hadn't spoken the words, the closeness, the gentle touches, and the shared glance said more than either of us could admit.
The room felt smaller, warmer, closer and in that moment, I knew whatever this was, whatever it had been, and whatever it might become, I didn't want to break it.
We sat there for a long while, sipping our wine, our fingers brushing, our eyes meeting, and that unspoken connection threading us together like it had always been meant to.
The night settled around me, I realized I could sit here forever, just like this, close to him, letting the warmth, the subtle tension, and the quiet admiration hang in the air and for the first time in a long time, it felt.. right.
The silence stretched, comfortable yet charged, like a string pulled between us, I set my wine glass down on the table, feeling the warmth linger in my fingers from his thumb brushing mine.
" So.. what have you been doing all this time? " I asked, keeping my tone light, casual. Not because I wanted it to be casual, but because my pulse still felt like it was hammering against my ribs.
Michele leaned back slightly on the couch, one arm draped over the back, eyes never leaving mine " Living. " He said with a faint smile " Work keeps me busy, sure. But.. it's quieter than I like. Too quiet. "
I tilted my head, studying him and said " Quieter than you like? I wouldn't have thought that about you. You're.. the calm in the storm. You thrive on peace. "
He chuckled softly, a low, rumbling sound that made my stomach twist a familiar way and said " Maybe, but peace isn't the same as quiet. Quiet makes you notice things.. like absence. "
I swallowed, not sure if he meant me or just the emptiness of the house when I wasn't around, and said " So.. the house wasn't the same without me? " I asked, trying to sound teasing.
" No, it wasn't and you know it. "
I laughed softly, brushing my hair behind my ear, heart fluttering and said " I guess I did kind of leave a hole then. "
His eyes softened, a quiet intensity behind them, he leaned a fraction closer and murmured " Not a hole. A.. weight. The right kind. Like something was missing until you came back. "
My pulse jumped " I.. didn't realize I mattered that much. " I admitted quietly, almost to myself.
Michele's gaze lingered, soft but steady and said " You always did. Even when you didn't see it. Even when you thought I wasn't paying attention. I notice. Everything. "
I laughed nervously, brushing my fingers across my lips, trying to hide the sudden heat creeping up my neck and said " Everything? "
He smirked faintly, that slow knowing curve of his lips and said " Even the little things. How you wrinkle your nose when you're thinking. How you bite your lip whe you're unsure. How.. well.. how you look at me sometimes. "
I froze for a moment, caught completely off guard and said " I- what do you mean? "
His hand shifted slightly, brushing against mine again and said softly, eyes locked on mine " You know exactly what I mean. I've always noticed. Every when I shouldn't have. "
I felt my cheeks heat, my chest tightening in that familiar, fluttering way and whispered " You.. noticed? "
" Always, even now. Even when you try not to show it. "
The words hung between us, heavy, charged, intimate. I took a slow sip of wine, trying to steady myself, but it did nothing for the flutter in my chest " I.. didn't know you saw me that way. " I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper.
" I see you. I always seen you. More than you think. "
I swallowed hard, words catching in my throat and said " I.. don't know what to say. "
Michele's eyes softened, the weight behind his gaze settling over me like a warm, insistent tide, he shifted closer and murmured " You're think I could ever not see you that way? You think I could look at you all these years and not notice.. everything? "
I swallowed hard and said " I.. I don't know. I guess I thought.. maybe it was just me imagining things that you.. didn't feel the same. "
He let out a soft, almost amused chuckle and said " Imagine? No, it wasn't imagination. Every glance, every movement, every little hesitation, I noticed. I've always noticed. "
" Even.. even when I tried to hide it? "
" Especially then. Every subtle sign, every flicker of emotion, you were impossible to miss and I was.. helpless against noticing you. "
I bit my lip, heart hammering in my chest and said " Helpless? "
" Yes. Helpless because.. I wanted to notice you. Wanted to see you, even when I knew I shouldn't. Even when it was complicated, even when it was hard. "
" I.. I didn't know you thought about me like that. I thought maybe I was reading too much into.. everything. "
" You weren't. I've thought about you constantly. Every day. Every time something reminded me of you. Every time I caught myself wishing you were near. I.. never stopped noticing. "
My chest tightened, heat pooling in my stomach and whispered, almost afraid of the answer " And now? "
" Now? " His lips curved into that slow, deliberate smirk I've always been unable to resist " Now I notice you more than ever. Now.. you're here and I don't intend to let a single moment pass where I don't. "
I let out a shaky laugh and said " That sounds.. intense. "
" It is. " He admitted, moving closer so that our foreheads nearly touched " Because it's real and I've waited.. waited for you to come back, to be here, so I could finally tell you. So you'd know. So you'd see that.. everything I've felt, everything I've noticed, it's all true. All for you. "
I swallowed, chest tight, heartbeat wild, letting the words settle deep inside me and said " You.. always felt that way? "
" Always. " He whispered, thumb brushing along the back of my hand in slow, tender strokes " Even when you weren't here. Even when I tried to hide it from myself. Even when I thought I could ignore it.. I couldn't. You.. have always mattered. More than I can put into words. "
I closed my eyes for a moment, letting the warmth of him, the intensity, the honesty, fill every inch of me and admitted softly " I.. I think I've been waiting to hear that. "
" And I've been waiting to say it. " He murmured back, voice low, intimate, his forehead resting lightly against mine " Waiting for the moment when you'd come back and I could finally tell you everything I've noticed. Everything I've wanted. Eveything I've felt.
" Now, we stop hiding. We stopped pretending. I see you and I want you. Completely, and nothing about that has changed. "
" I.. want that too. More than I realized. " I whispered.
Michele's lips curved into that slow, satisfied smile and leaned closer, brushing his lips softly against my temple and murmured " Then let's stop pretending. Lets just.. be. "
And for the first time in a long while, I felt myself simply be, letting the charged silence, the warmth, and the honesty fill every corner of me.
