—light snow, silence, the empty streets, the fog, thrilling cold—so much beauty. Like breathing pure oxygen.

█ ▌✢ AUBURN!!
auburn jumped, and the ground approached slowly, like she was falling through water or honey rather than air. she had time, time to focus on her landing and get it right — making not a single noise as her feet touched the ground. truly, a vampire was a predator without compare. ❛ it would be incredible rude toward freya if we’d ever drop it, ❜ she said airily as she tucked a strand of red back. a part of her had missed dimitri lately, had missed the opportunity to talk to someone wired similarly — and so she had gone to meet him. an easy problem with an easy solution. ❛ how have you been? ❜
PERHAPS it was a sign of his embarrassment, but Dimitri took a long drink of his - completely black - coffee to delay having to answer her question. Granted, he could give a completely vague answer & move on with the conversation, but he couldn’t lie to Auburn. Not even by omission. “ I’ve been alright ... just struggling with how strict to be with my ... neighbors . “ he shrugged, tucking his head down with a flare of that embarrassment popping back up. “ What about you ? “
█ ▌✢ THERESIA
THERESIA OBVIOUSLY knew dimitri irvine, but she did not know him well — he was someone she sometimes noticed from the corner of her eye when they were in the same place. in fact, this interaction — awkward as it was — was probably the first time they were actually talking. and since theresia had made a point of out not getting involved with the gossip at school, she felt like right now, she was ridiculously UNINFORMED about him. what she did remember, however, was that he had never been mean to her when they had been in elementary school so this was probably not going to be something she would regret. yes, sure, the other students were convinced that he was some delinquent bad boy, but she would rather form her own opinion.
❛ great, alright… ❜ she trailed off as she moved down the short hallway and into the living area where, in wintertime, a fire would be singing its song of warmth and homeliness. now, in late summer, the cabin was refreshingly cold and far too silent for her taste. but she would take care of that, of the deafening silence later; right now, she flung her bag onto the couch before crossing the room to open the windows. while the cabin had been used over the summer when her cousin had wanted to get out of town for a bit to work on essays for scholarships, it had been vacated ever since asce rosen had gone missing. by now, the air had grown stale and dusty — the place had to be aired before theresia’s lungs could refuse her their service, that was for sure.
TURNING AROUND once more to face dimitri, she managed a genuine smile. ❛ so, i don’t think we have a lot of — selection here, but with the weather outside, i think something to drink would be a good idea? ❜ she asked, pushing up the sleeves of the blouse she had chosen to wear — a choice she now regretted because she should have opted for something shorter in this weather, something that might have even let her have a shot at getting a little tan ( even though she was just as CURSED as eleanor when it came to staying pale all summer ). ah well, the rest of her outfit was not only suited to the weather but the skirt was also just short enough to show off the bee tattoo on her knee whenever she moved, the tattoo her father had promised her months ago and that she had finally gotten at the beginning of the summer holidays.
❛ so, uh, water is a given, but i think we have some iced tea left? any preferences? ❜
( god, she was rambling. why was the rambling? that was just not cool. )
DIMITRI did his absolute best not to let his gaze linger on the way Theresia pushed up her sleeves. When he managed to ( four seconds too late ) look away, he felt a very rare rush of gratitude towards his mother. If there was one thing Drusilla had taught him, it was how to keep his desires close to his chest. He had gotten quite good at pretending he didn’t want things.
SO instead of blurting out something fucking weird, ( “Wow Theresia, you’re hair looks even shinier up close!” or “What did you end up doing with all that unicorn themed stuff you had in seventh grade?” or “Do you agree with the girls who think I’m cool? Or the ones who think I’m a delinquent? Have you ever noticed me like I notice you?” ) Dimitri was left awkwardly searching for things he could say.
WITH significant effort, he ensured his expression was passively considering. He didn’t want to be too uncaring about the question, that might come off as rude or even cold, but he certainly couldn’t let himself look too invested in deciding what drink he wanted that’d be weird. With a shrug ( lasting two long seconds, which felt appropriate for what he wanted to convey ) he shifted back against the wall. Hoping to really hammer in the non threatening vibe.
“ Whatever you’re having is fine with me. ”
A sense of accomplishment pulsed through him, as he’d kept the statement warm enough not to be rude and neutral enough it didn’t give away any of the feelings that felt like they could come bursting from his tongue any second. The pride shone in his eyes, he could feel it, he just hoped Theresia either didn’t notice or didn’t dwell on it.
I had to.
a human being. capable of terrible things, capable of greatness.

@mortecula!!
❛ —dimitri, hello. ❜ auburn had waited for him, perched on a fire escape and staring down at the bustling crowd below her. once he had come into her line of sight, she had descended a little, though she still PREFERRED to stay out of his immediate reach — just in case he did not recognize her instantly since she was TECHNICALLY TRESPASSING on his lands. ❛ i gotta say, i love the coat. it looks positively spooky. ❜
“ Hello , Auburn . “
THE greeting came with a pleased tone & an arched brow. Someday, surely, they’d be able to move past the word spooky. ( when it stopped being hilarious perhaps? ) He supposed some people might find it odd that he was happy to see another vampire on his territory, one he was most definitely not romantically involved with, but the sight of Auburn only brought relief. Maybe she could finally meet his... neighbor && offer advice.
“ Are we ever going to let that one go ? “

█ ▌✢ enthusiastiics
THE CITY had changed since asce rosen had gone missing, and theresia was not sure whether she would ever get used to it — to the way the curtains had been torn away and the ugliness that had been hidden away for DECADES was now in plain sight. at least for those who were looking and who did not hide from the unpleasant truth: that their hometown had always been a TERRIBLE PLACE and that the sudden disappearance of one of the city’s most popular young man had only cast the light onto it.
AND THERESIA could not stand the dishonesty of the overall situation, could not deal with how the city was split in false concern for asce’s safety and badly hidden glee that after all these years, the rosen family would be struggling with a SCANDAL. thus, she had borrowed johannes’ old car and had driven out to the forest, leaving the car on one of the parking places before hiking up to the one place in city she could still consider a sanctuary, the one place where no one would be to ask her about her mother and about the accident that had put the judge into hospital.
SHE HAD not expected to run into someone, much less into dimitri irvine — who appeared to be picking the lock and rambled, once he took note of her presence, about his reasons for attempting to break into the old hunting cabin that was now used for other purposes, mostly to remind the world that her family was still among the rich ones in town.
❛ with the way the wind is blowing, any screams would be carried into the other direction, ❜ she said, about as matter-of-fact as her cousin would, twirling her key ring around her finger. she did not know him well as they ran in different social circles, but tess had never been given a reason to dislike him. on the other hand, she had approximately nine-hundred reasons to dislike valeria — the other girl had the unpleasant habit of grating on her nerves.
SIDESTEPPING HIM to unlock the door, she threw him a look over her shoulder. ❛ i spent the night at eleanor’s, trying to get her to sleep rather than to go looking for asce all night again so today, i understand the need to get away from other people, ❜ she added as she finally managed to open the door and step into the familiar cabin, ❛ so, be my guest? ❜
DIMITRI wouldn’t have admitted to it under torture, but he stood in the ( now open ) doorway for a while. He wanted to believe it was because of the sudden mention of Asce, but even though he didn’t dislike his missing cousin, Dimitri didn’t have any strong attachments to him. No, the thing that had him frozen was the heavy realization that Theresia Severin not only wasn’t going to have him arrested, she was inviting him in.
( not like that, this was definitely certainly not anything like that & holy hell Dimitri get yourself together before you make this super weird && she changes her mind about the police )
SERIOUSLY this would have been fine if it were anyone else. It’s just he’s always had a...thing about Theresia. He’s lived in the same town as her literally as long as he can remember &&& up to now successfully avoided direct interactions. She was just so...bright. It had always been a little ( a lot ) intimidating. He had no frame of reference for how to handle someone like her, so he just did his best not to ever have to.
FOR the most part, it wasn’t something he really thought about. They had different friends, different hobbies, different lives. In fact, he probably would have the same casual indifference towards her he had for most people, had it not been for the occasional moments where he...observed her.
OKAY no, that sounded way more stalkerish than it actually was. He didn’t watch her. Dimitri just noticed her. Sometimes. If they were in the same place. Just little things that she did would catch his attention. Like what color crayon she seemed to prefer in elementary, the decorations on her locker in middle school, that time she laughed loud enough that he could hear her all the way across the restaurant a few years ago. He just noticed small little things & just so happened to remember them. That’s all.
( it wasn’t a crush, alright? Dimitri didn’t do crushes. It was...well it didn’t matter what it was because it wasn’t a crush. Labels are stupid anyway. )
HALTING his thoughts there, because he really needed to do something before this whole situation got even more strange, Dimitri stepped inside. Offering her a small nod.
“ Ah . Right . Okay . “
