Quick question...
I have crazy curly hair. Proper ringlets if I keep it brushed, but if I leave it then it dreads. Properly dreads with no effort on my own part. I’ve never wore my hair like that, but if I did would it still be considered cultural appropriation? It’s wouldn’t be a style thing, it would just be letting my hair do as my hair does. Thoughts?
if your hair has ringlets it is not afrotextured and therefore your hair is matting, not locking
read my dreadlocks tag to understand the difference and why it’s appropriation
@mortifiedjack my hair does the same thing b/c of my curls, but trust me, it’s not healthy at all for your hair to do. even if you have veryyy curly hair, there’s multiple reasons why dreads are for black people. keep your ringlets healthy! curls are a blessing, don’t let them get nasty & matted.
Feel like a disclaimer is in order, I mentioned in the OP’s tags that I’m not planning on changing my hair, I was just wondering after wrestling with it yesterday morning. After looking through your tags I think a bit of clarification is in order. I think ringlets was a bad word to use, as my hair is somewhere in between curls and afrotexture. Not surprising as my family is a bit of a cultural melting pot. SECOND DISCLAIMER- I AM NOT SAYING I HAVE AFROTEXTURED HAIR. Final thing worth mentioning is when I said ‘no effort on my part’, I meant as in no backcombing or any of the techniques used to encourage ‘dreads’. No additional effort would have been better wording. I’m confident that my hair is not damaged to the point of matting. Still, got my answer. Thanks tumblr.
