Happy Summer Solstice! While we aren't running a 10k or enjoying 24 hours of Alaska's Midnight Sun like we were this time last year, we're still celebrating the longest day of the year up north in Michigan now with our well-earned 10K run shirts (plus one crazy hat 🦊) and remembering that super fun race...and how sore we were for the next few days as we made our drive up the Dalton Highway! 🤣⠀ ⠀ This year the race is being held virtually so as to avoid the large crowds at this time. In February 2020 we headed to New Zealand with @rvgeeks for a 5-week RV adventure. Things changed rapidly in March due to coronavirus, and NZ locked down quickly. Our very last adventure before we headed south was one I (Cait) had been looking forward to all summer. 🐴⠀ In the past, I'd owned horses, and we had planned to make a horseback ride part of this adventure. Here at the end of our trip we found the El Shaddai Ranch to finally go for that ride. Walking through the towering cottonwood trees at Cottonwood Island Park, we kept our eyes out for the carvings we had been told about. Fun in the snow with the pups! ⠀ Mocha LOVED the cold and snow - Bella tolerated it for about 20 minutes and then wanted to go back inside where the Truma furnace was keeping it nice and toasty. It was Tom's birthday back in September when we visited, and he couldn't think of a better way to spend it than hiking around the remote Salmon Glacier on this beautiful warm fall day! We started our hike down the mountain slope to get up close with this behemoth of a glacier. This glacier is unique in that as it descends it flows mainly down towards the ocean, but also makes a turn into a dead end valley where it breaks up. We found the hiking at this end less steep and worked our way down the slope of loose rock towards the ice. In the sun, the ice was dripping and occasionally a chunk would fall and crash. The Salmon Glacier has a designated viewpoint aligned with the center of the glacier as the reward for those willing to make this treacherous journey. Back on the highway, we started to get into the mountains. These high peaks were counting down to winter day by day as snow marched down their flanks. More than once the temperature dipped near freezing and we even saw a snowflake or two. This drive requires that you carry chains or run winter tires from October through April, and that meant we needed to keep moving because September was nearing its end, and we had neither of these. After our tropical-like hike along Boya Lake, we decided this place would require more than a stop for lunch, so we settled in for a night in the campground. We enjoyed an extremely peaceful evening here as there were very few other campers in the park this time of year. This was just what we all needed, including the pups! The bottom of Boya Lake is a stark white marl of silt and shell fragments that reflect light through the immensely clear water creating the spectacular color one would expect to see somewhere in the tropics, far from this northern plain. About an hour and a half north of the border we came to the small town of Carcross, the name being shortened from its original designation as Caribou Crossing. The town is famous for mountain biking, and being home to the World's Smallest Desert! ⠀ ...Okay, it's not really a desert, but it looks like one, and stands out because these tan-colored dunes seem to be completely out of place here in the north. While exploring Downtown Haines, we saw a giant hammer on the main street. Intrigued, we investigated to find The Hammer Museum! 🔨⠀ This museum has thousands of hammers on display and was started in 2002 by Dave Pahl, a blacksmith and avid collector. 🔨⠀ The Hammer Museum had flexible hammers, curved hammers, gold hammers, soft hammers, big hammers, small hammers and every other kind of hammer you can think of. We almost didn't go to Haines, AK, which really isn't easily on the way to anything. Luckily, the ferry schedule lined up and we were able to book a spot last-minute to Skagway so we wouldn't have to backtrack. Further down the road in Kluane we hiked up to Rock Glacier. We followed this beautiful trail up to the nose of a glacier-like structure consisting solely of rocks. At one time a glacier flowed down this mountain slope and got covered in falling rock debris. The ice continued to flow extremely slow, and carried the rocks down hill with it.
