I think about The Man of the Hole so often. 27 years alone. 27 years with no one to speak to but strangers to wave to. Survived a genocide, a massacre that killed everyone he had ever known and later, an assassination attempt. He still tried to warn researches about the traps he built. He was only about 60 when he died in 2022. The people who tormented him in life later desecrated his grave.

I do think it is important to share the stories of the Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island and Ishi and the countless other indigenous people who experienced the profound trauma of being the last survivor but it is important to remember that the last Aboriginal families in Australia to be contacted by Europeans were resettled in the 1980s and the Indian government has proposed a plan that will mean total genocide for the Shompen people. When I say "deserving is a trap" this is what I mean. The question should never be one of deserving, but one of need. The idea of deserving something exists entirely to draw a line between the support people need, and the people we think are too icky/immoral/lazy to get that support.

A society that waits until you're too far gone before it deems you worthy of trying to save is a failed one. The only difference between a society that is capable of helping those in need, and refuses to, an a society that is simply incapable of helping those in need, is that the capable one blames the needy for their own lack of care.

That’s Louis Rossman, a repair technician and YouTuber, who went viral recently for railing against Apple. Apple purposely charges a lot for repairs and you either have to pay up or buy a new device. That’s because Apple withholds necessary tools and information from outside repair shops. And to think, we were just so close to change.

This guy inspired me to repair my own macbook. First of all, you should know that I am not… like, I have to look up HOW to look up what my computer specifications are. Tech, that ware either soft or hard, is not a subject in which I experience comfort or competence. But my puppy peed on my keyboard, and I asked the apple store, or the fucking mac cafe, or the godsdamn Computer House Chill Zone or whatever cute ass name they have for their bullshit store, and they said it would be TWELVE HUNDRED DOLLARS TO REPLACE MY KEYBOARD. I’m not even exaggerating.

So I asked the internet, well how hard IS it to repair? And I saw this guy’s video, and while I am no techie, I AM fueled by spite, so I was all “oh, they do that shit on purpose specifically so they can charge me $1200 bucks or make me buy a new computer hunh? FUCK THEM” and I bought all the tools I needed for about $25 and I bought all the parts I needed for about another $25 and I watched a few tutorial videos, and I replaced my own keyboard.

So, once you are doing the actual deed, it becomes pretty obvious that they are finding creative ways to make this much harder than it has to be on purpose. On thing that stood out to me is, instead of all the tiny screws being the same size, there are about two dozen very slightly different sizes. They could easily be all the same size, or like, two sizes at most, but no.

These mother fuckers will take a panel that screws into place and they’ll use a different size screw for each corner. They are so close that you almost cannot tell them apart visually, but they each will only screw into the matching corner. Like, it’s a pretty clear “fuck you” to anyone trying to do repairs.

I remember when I was about 12, I watched a show on TLC that followed people as they got somewhat uncommon medical procedures.

There was one episode with a trans woman getting different gender-affirming operations, including breast implants. It showed the procedure, and (what I found so fascinating that it's stuck with me for decades), as soon as the doctor put the implant in, a censor blur popped up on the nipple.

And you just know there was a meeting between the TLC lawyers and the editors and producers of the show to discuss what the difference was between a "man nipple" (can be shown) and a "woman nipple" (no no must obscure, 'tis naughty). And they decided that as soon as the implant goes in and the nipple has more mass behind it, that's the moment when it becomes a woman's nipple and must be hidden to comply with TV rules.

But it's the same nipple. On the same person. I know what it looks like; I just saw it. But TV and obscenity rules are rules, and the rules say woman nipple = sexual and therefore explicit, but man nipple = neutral, just fine.

"Free the Nipple" was calling out arbitrary bullshit like that, because someone just existing with their body parts should not be considered obscene, and the double standard that men can be topless but women can't is so blatantly ridiculous. All nipples are just nipples. If you get turned on or bothered by them, that's on you.

Kids books is probably not the best way to word it, you can enjoy them at every age, including your childhood, as you get older you may find new truths in them, but they're still good for any age.

I want you to understand this. I NEED you to understand this. My mother read me the hobbit as bedtime story, and I started pushing myself to read before pre-school so I could in fact read the hobbit for myself instead of having to wait for bedtime.

I didn't do so right away but jesus wept I PUSHED myself to learn to read SPECIFICALLY so I could read The Hobbit! It is, in fact, a children's story! And children only see page count as 'there is a lot of this fun story to read!'

My dad was read The Hobbit by his mum as a kid, then tried to read Lord Of The Rings but decided to wait a year because the print was too small. Then he read Lord Of The Rings as a kid.

I was also read The Hobbit as a kid, multiple times. My dad read me a lot of Pratchett as well, and then I started to read it on my own when I got better at reading. Give kids novels. Big stories. God I loved being a kid and reading big stories. Give kids stories about stuff they don't quite understand yet, they'll learn.

My dad read the Hobbit at around 9, it was a gift from his grandad and he loved it, he reread it about a thousand times. He then kept that copy and gave it to me when I was seven and I read the whole book in one day, multiple times. And then 7 year old me discussed the book with my 11 year old cousin who had also read it because we were kids who had both read an incredible kids book.

Having "dated" words does not make a book innacessible to kids. I was reading Enid Blyton books at 5 years old, only stopping to ask my mam every so often about unfamiliar words or cultural differences. My parents didn't write off old books as too difficult, they decided "she'll figure it out" and it is one of the best things to happen to me.

Because I could read old stories, I got to uncover dastardly plots with the famous five at five, I could explore new lands in the Faraway tree at six, I could adventure with Bilbo and company at seven, I could learn French with the girls from St Clares School at eight, I could pay a visit Hartfield and gasp at the antics of Ms Austin's finely crafted nobility at 10, I could run with Achilles and stand in horror at Medeas action at 15.

All of these incredible stories that written long before my time, using terminology and structure of bygone days were never deemed out of my reach, instead, my mam plucked an old €2 book, from a charity shop shelf and let her daughter become immersed in and rashived by the stories that would keep her reading under the covers at night, just as other children had with those very same tales, for generation after generation. Because they have and always will be for children.
