And you could substitute many more things into this. Young people fight to not be infantilized by authority, but they also in some areas fight to not be adultified. Some people have to fight so hard for a variety of reasons to be able to grow out their hair. Some people have to fight so hard to be able to cut it. Some fight to be allowed to wear coverings, some fight to be allowed to wear nothing. Some fight to be left alone, some fight to get the care they need. Some fight to be able to leave, some fight to be able to stay.

None of these comparable fights are opposed to one another, because the fight isn't about the specific thing, it is all about the same thing: autonomy.

Someone's fight to wear a dress is someone's fight to wear pants is someone's fight to live alone is someone's fight to live with someone is someone's fight to be left alone by medical institutions is someone's fight to be able to medically alter their body.

It is the same fight. People who want the opposite for themselves that I want for me are my siblings. We want the exact same thing: the choice to be who we want, how we want, on our terms.

And I WANT that for everyone. I want people to be allowed to choose what I wouldn't, do what I wouldn't, because then I would be free to do what I want and need.

Did a little season one of the Pitt rewatch and I’m reminded that Mohan is a character who is repeatedly shown to be exceptional at the doctor patient interaction, to have some strengths and some weaknesses when it comes to her clinical judgment and medical decision making (very normal and expected for a resident as they’re all very much still learning), and is repeatedly shown to be weak in her ability to take feedback as well as in her teaching skills.

One of the main things a resident is expected to do is teach interns and students. And Mohan is interestingly pretty bad at this. I just watched the episode where Santos says one awkward thing to a patient. She’s a new intern and she didn’t handle a patient’s overwhelming emotions perfectly. She wasn’t particularly bad, just not ideal. This isn’t surprising. This is a learned skill for many people.

Mohan takes Santos out of the room and dresses her down her in the middle of the hall. She doesn’t invite a conversation where Santos can reflect and learn. Samira speaks over Santos, shames her, and lectures her. She does the same with Whitaker and the sickle cell patient when she shames him in the middle of the hall rather than encourage him to learn from a common mistake. Both times she’s right in pointing out what her trainee did wrong, but she’s so aggressive and condescending that she’s going to alienate her trainees rather than let them reflect and grow from her feedback. Then she lets Santos take the fall for her mistake with the hyponatremia patient, which is quite a choice for a resident to make.

There’s so much of this character being flattened in fandom that it’s easy to forget that she’s a character with strengths and weaknesses as a resident. And interestingly her weakest point is how condescending and judgmental she is when teaching, which of course is how she will be treated by Robby in season two.

A Korean convenience shop just opened up in my town (thank fuck because everything has been shutting down and that section of main street was entirely empty) and because they're Korean, they stock so many different kinds of cool imported food, including American "junk food" and I got SO excited because not only do they have so many different types of Fanta (I don't even like fizzy drinks I just get excited for foreign Fanta) I finally found out the meaning of so many of the references I was confused by in American books as a child/young teen. I thought Takis were a restaurant 🤣 12 year old me is jumping for joy at finally having answers

Also, their lucozade is the cheapest in town and that makes my POTS patient self so happy because I like having electrolytes that actually taste nice and are convenient for when you can't get at the cups to make the anti-dizzy drink without making yourself dizzier

People really need to take a wider view of this paranoia about age gaps and realise this is how we lose the ability to build communities. You need to be able to realise that people can have things in common with you even if they grew up in a different time/place/culture. You also need to realise you can build communities with people who don’t have obvious things in common with you, that people can have the same goals and needs as you even if in most ways they’re very unlike you. Now, more than ever, we need to be able to work together to have any chance to stand ip against the few who have so, so much more power, money and influence than any of us do individually. We need to form communities that reach across age (and class and race and sexuality and so on…).

This is one of those topics I feel very strongly about and agree completely with the points in this post.

I struggle to make fandom friends on Tumblr, and sometimes I worry that it is because people in their 20s think they can't be friends with someone in their 40s. That I'm uncool, weird, cringe, intimidating, or just too different from them.

But things don't change as much with age as most think. Older people still are silly, awkward, overwhelmed, enthusiastic, confused, playful, irresponsible, obsessive, dumb, cool, horny, and all these other things young people think we stop feeling or being as we get older. We're just humans. I am really great friends with someone on here more than 20 years younger than me because we have so much in common! You can't tell that we're different ages when we chat.

And also—you can be friends with people who you do NOT have much in common with! Because fundamentally, you always have humanity in common.

Years ago, there was this lady in my community who was maybe 30 years older than me and who I knew was far more conservative than me. I dismissed her as someone I didn't want to spend any time with because she was obviously too different than me. But, I was forced to spend some time with her (long story), and guess what? I became really good friends with her! Because I found out I was wrong about all those things that made her different than me? NO! I was right about that—she was just as annoyingly conservative as I had suspected. BUT that wasn't the whole of her person. She was so much richer than that. There were lots of things I didn't know about her. A few of those things were commonalities, but overall, we still didn't have much in common—but that didn't matter. We could still be kind to each other, help each other, respect each other, even enjoy each other's company if we stuck to topics where we didn't clash too badly. I feel really bad for judging her, and I'm so glad I gave her a chance.

So yes, please make friends with people who are not your same age. You probably have more in common than you think, and even if you don't, that doesn't matter. We're all humans and we need each other. Our communities need us to get along.

The constant framing of an older person interacting with a younger person as something with clearly predatory intent is a huge part of the problem. Learn to spot actual grooming behavior and patterns, don't substitute a difference in age for your actual judgment. This pedojacketing shit has to stop. When I was 22, I met the person who quickly became one of my best friends (the Flash to my Green Lantern). He’s ten years older than me, 32 at the time.

Another one of my very best friends is 10 years younger than me, we met when they were fourteen and I was their violin teacher, and over the years, we became friends slash siblings instead of only teacher/student.

By the time you’re 26, you *definitely* need to have the social skills to interact with any type of person. You’re not a baby anymore.
