i do sort of love that when you first learn about ronan in TRB, you feel bad for him. you might find him sus, but his dad died and he found the body, that's horrific, surely that's the worst thing to happen to him/that family. when adam and blue see the barns for the first time its described as this idyllic utopia, it's magical, it's warm, it's beautiful - you grew up here? - surely the lynch fam was equally as idyllic. then as the series progresses (and even into the dreamer trilogy) you learn how completely fucked the whole family history and situation really was. slowly but surely every preconceived notion you had about niall or aurora or declan or ronan or matthew is uncovered, dragged into the light. the "perfect" family ronan was desperate to get back was not perfect at all. (also declan was right the whole time)

i do truly think it's sort of deeply romantic in some ways that Gansey grows up in double-talk politics land where you bury everything dark and ugly and never say what you mean, and then pursued his quest in a way that was largely lonely of true connection, and then his first real true friend and the first person to offer him such genuine love is Ronan who, while absolutely a liar in his own way despite his insistence otherwise, is also not someone who hides the ugly or does it passive aggressively or behind backs, and is at the very least so much more truthful than Gansey is used to, and cares so little about appearances.

like. what a breath of fresh air that must be. no wonder Gansey values it so much about him.
