I'm Blackmoth, the Warrior God of Silly Entertainment.
I welcome you into my little, sick world!
Let's talk a bit about me:
I'm a girl who lives by the rules of Fantasia. I'm an incurable lover of villains, action-adventure movies, sci-fi and a player of vintage titles and fantasy books reader.
I'm a time-wasting writer/artist and a natural lazybones.
I tend to underestimate myself greatly, and because of this, I suffer from frequent bouts of inferiority, believing that the world around me is better in every way. I usually counteract these dark moments by drawing or writing something humorous to cheer myself up.
I have a terrible phobia of parasitic insects due to rather traumatic past experiences; however, I make jokes in an attempt to lighten this enormous burden.
I am politically neutral and in favor of euthanasia (when the case is too desperate)

After another break where Oda's likely working with OPLA to film Season 3, the manga returns to continue Brook's flashback. Last chapter we saw Brooks impoverished origins and friendship with Reuven, but we all know such joys will not last in Esperia.
Where does it all go wrong? Let's see if we will find out this chapter.
Spoilers for the Chapter, Support the Official Release too
Boa is on the cover this time, working on her cooking skills for Luffy
We continue with Brook's childhood, being charged as Candelle's page (her squire)
Alas, Brook is still pervy as a kid, noting all the 'babes' and 'hotties' around the palace
Candelle isn't pleased with Brook's behaviour, even when he insists she's still his favourite
We get a semi-montage of Brook's life with Candelle, with her more or less parenting him at times
She asks him about not wearing school uniform, which he responds that he wouldn't let the school cramp his style but will wear a royal guard uniform
There's another scene of Candelle tucking a sleeping Brook in his bed while he sleeps with his new guitar
The other guards note how they're a little jealous of Brook being Candelle's squire, as he gets along with people in the Barracks
While training with the blade, Brook asks Candelle what her type is, much like Shuri has tried to mold herself into Brook's ideal type
Candelle however implies that there's only one she has eyes for, likely Reuven, but she feels out of his league
She resolves to strengthen her swordplay so at the least she can stay at his side
Brook however hasn't clued in that it's Reuven, noting that if she dressed more ladylike she may get him, before wondering if she means him - since she's by his side right now
Brook then pivots with another panties question, first asking if she wears mens ones before following up with the usual
Candelle again reprimands his indignant language, so he does it a more formal way and gets a hit on the head
Candelle reminds him that strength and etiquette goes hand in hand, still noting that she has to drill manners into him
We return to adult flashback Brook time, mentioning how everyone admires Candelle
He mentions that there was also a time where a WG ship with Celestial Dragons came by...which sounds alarm bells
No one in Esperia had handled Celestial Dragons before, and apparently afterwards Candelle was left bedridden for months
Brook, it's a bad sign when people are bedridden for months, I sincerely doubt it was stress
It was apparently a dark (gloomy) time when she was ill, but after that Reuven ascended the throne, married Candelle and had Shuri
Brook notes how overjoyed Esperia was regarding all those events, celebrating on the streets like a live concert
Many citizens were keen to meet Shuri at her birth apparently, eager to see if she resembled her mother
Brook breaks from his tangent, circling back to confirming that's why he admires both her parents and would die for them
Shuri seems a little jealous, asking what he would do if she were in danger
Brook does confirm that he'd risk his life to protect her too, but she wonders if that's because of her or because she's their daughter
Brook hesitates but does reply because of her, but she sulks having noted that hesitation
She's quickly bought off with a lollipop though XD
Brook and Shuri continue with their day; training in swordplay (of which Brook is way more skilled), and wandering the gardens with her on his shoulders
Shuri does still fondly greet Reuven, who notes that she's grown up enough to stop calling her 'daddy' and call her 'father'
Shuri still replies fondly, pleasing Candelle who is also there
The montage continues; Brook quick to bring first aid when Shuri cuts her finger, the two bringing an umbrella for a puppy, Shuri on her tiptoes to appear taller when measured against a wall, Shuri kicking Brook during one of his advances for another woman, Brook fleeing from Shuri's skeleton puppet, fishing where Brook and Reuven did
All the while Brook suggests that Shuri sing a song if she ever craves freedom from her parents called 'Y'all better buzz off'
Shuri mentions that the lyrics are weird, as Brook confirms it's dialect from the Kamigata kingdom (unless translated differently we haven't heard of this kingdom before)
The song's lyrics suggest that of someone annoyed with being treated like a kid, noting that they're not 'pups' and cannot be bought off with treats
The montage's end includes Brook being bedridden from wounds and Shuri and Candelle cooking something for him to feel better
A year later, when Shuri is 15 and Brook 28, the good times end
With an ominous sign of a violin out of tune, for the Kingdom of Esperia this is the day the music died
A thick, noxious fog blights the kingdom for half a year, decomposing its instruments and making the people ill
Hundreds died from the fog, despite Brook attempting to lift spirits and Candelle's rally that the fog will pass
Alas, the fog did pass - but not until Candelle died
Turns out she wasn't a God's Knight honey trap and was genuinely a nice person, which is refreshing. But there's still something suspicious going on with her before her death
The kingdom mourned Candelle; Shuri, Brook and Reuven being shown weeping
From the disaster comes a new problem; they can't afford the heavenly tribute to the World Government
Shuri still trains in swordplay with Brook, having improved enough to keep Brook on notice, Brook mentions how it's like she can see the future - implying that she unlocked Observation Haki
Shuri mentions how she will be like mother (first saying 'mommy') but Brook notes that while she's well-suited for the role, Reuven may not approve anymore
It seems Reuven is still hurt with grief, which Brook assumes, noting that they can't fix it and he will continue staying by his side
Shuri mentions that Brook wanted to be a pirate, but he's okay with putting his dreams on hold for the King
Shuri plans however on accompanying Brook when he does become a pirate, despite his objections
Reuven, more haggard and tired-looking than before, makes a big declaration: the World Government is now their enemy, Esperia is at war
Brook asks no questions and acknowledges, but the other Royal Guards request a reason
Reuven tells them that the WG gave them a way to make up for not paying the Heavenly Tribute: slaves. They requested 1000 slaves to waive the fee
And Reuven, based as he is, refused - noting that slavery in Marejois is a fate worse than death
In two months the WG Armada will arrive, but Reuven had no intention of sacrificing his own people to slavery
The Streets of Esperia, not privy to this info, worry about their country and look to Brook, only hearing rumours that unaffiliated countries all fall into lawlessness
Another nation in the West Blue that disappeared? It can't be God Valley though it's been longer than 38 years ago at this point, Brook spent 50 years alone as a skeleton
Brook soothes spirits with a song, this one about other unaffiliated but thriving countries: Wano and Elbaf, and how they have nothing left to lose
From there we skip to two months later, the armada has arrived
In the scenes of war as Esperia is overwhelmed by the large WG fleet, the song 'Y'all Better Buzz Off' echoes on with newer lyrics echoing the country's defiance and refusal to be destroyed
Brook cuts his way through enemies, but the armies have made the palace, so Brook intends to hold the line there
We flash to Reuven telling Shuri not to join the fight, since the WG would use her as a hostage
Brook hopes Shuri doesn't get any crazy ideas, lamenting how the garden they walked through daily has now been burned down, the junkyard where he and Reuven met destroyed too
He sings, remember, so he doesn't feel afraid; afraid of loss, afraid of death, and then he makes it to the palace with a face of pure shock, horror and fear
For there, standing over Reuven's dead body is Shuri with drawn and bloody blade
...is it bad that I kinda heard Beethoven's fifth in my head at this scene? Dun Dun Dun Duuuuuun!
Not only that though, Brook's memory seems to have omitted some very key points; Shuri and Reuven have devil horns and wings reminiscent of Domi Reversi, a God's Knight sits in watch that many fans wonder could be Shiryu of the Rain, and in a black flame silhouette is the bestial yokai form of one Marcus Mars
With empty eyes Shuri tells Brook to not worry, the war is over
And another break...okay Oda you know I respect that you need to take breaks and that health is a priority but simultaneously WHYYYYY ODA? We literally just had a break!
Off that bat I know the gif looks like I'm being snarky but I do mean it in good faith. Much like last chapter Brook's backstory is using bits of other backstories in a good way, including that of Loki's backstory. The final scene is very similar to the cliffhanger we were left on with Harald before getting to see his and Rocks' life stories, incidentally Oda has done the 'you guessed correctly for the wrong character' bit as it seems Shuri is the one Domi Reversi'd rather than Harald.
If there's a negative I can find in the chapter it's perhaps that we did a few too many montage scenes. I understand the reason though, as I noted last chapter I expected the flashback to be short and therefore montages are a good way to speed up time. It still worked for the purpose of the montage be it training Brook and showing Candelle to be genuinely nice, Brook and Shuri's bond, or the haste of which Brook cut through the WG to try and protect her and Reuven in the ruins of his home country. I do feel like maybe we could've seen more of why Brook wanted to become a pirate, it just felt a bit like a side comment if anything that didn't feel too necessary - since surviving Esperia would push him to piracy to survive anyway.
But anyway, theory cap on. Candelle is not a God's Knight, and Reuven is not someone who turned against Brook out of jealousy, both of which are for the better really. However, I'm not entirely certain that Shuri is Reuven's daughter anymore. Horrible as it might sound there's something ominous about Candelle being unwell for months after the Celestial Dragons visited, only to then suddenly have Reuven be king, Candelle become queen, and Shuri then be born. I don't want to consider that someone did that to Candelle, though I also don't like the idea of Candelle making a deal with Imu to get her dreams in exchange for her firstborn being bound to Imu either; I can't however find the clue as to why Gunko/Shuri is different to the God's Knights and Gorosei. I mean, she doesn't age, she was in the flower room when Rocks broke in, and Imu was aggravated that her memories of Brook were not surppressed by them.
I also think foul play has been the downfall of Esperia. A toxic fog seems unnatural; it can't be Thriller Bark because that fog isn't harmful, Caesar's Punk Hazard stuff was well after this timeline as well, I feel like it was a bioweapon attack, a means to bend or eliminate Esperia by the WG. Killing Candelle - which is like the third queen to die to poisoning alongside Sora and Ida - was a bonus since it killed morale and a key part of their military power, then when Reuven refused to enslave his people - again, based as fuck, glad he remained a good king - the WG basically Buster Called them. The appearance of a God's Knight and a Gorosei however makes it feel more targeted.
Mentioning another West Blue kingdom being destroyed makes me curious too, it's hard to keep track of timelines but I'm sure at this point if Shuri is 15 and she should be 70 now then it's 55 years ago it can't be God Valley (38 years ago) or Ohara (22 years ago) so there must be another.
As mentioned, there is a lot in the chapter that echoes from other backstories; plague leading to the downfall of a thriving kingdom (Law), a beloved queen/mother figure's death (Sora, Ida, Scarlet, Ginny), regicide (Loki), Domi Reversi (Rocks), the destruction of a homeland (Robin). It even echoes Brook's history with the Rumbar pirates; the sadness he must've felt to lose everything again to plague and poison, to be the last survivor again.
But yes, the final scene. It does seem like we have to give Shuri/Gunko the benefit of the doubt, we would have to assume that Brook's own grief has clouded his mind when questioning why Shuri doesn't have her classic heterochromia or why everyone looks like devils right now. For the God's Knight present I don't think it's Shiryu or a Vinsmoke (whose kingdom was at its height 300 years ago), I feel like it's just the obvious answer of being a Manmayer who will take Shuri in and craft her into Gunko. Mars being here is very curious, but I suppose through him Imu turned Reuven and Shuri and forced each other to fight to the death - explaining why both have the Domi Reversi appearance.
I feel like there's gonna be a little more of Brook next chapter, mainly him cursing her name and leaving, but whether we'll see Shuri's side of the story may be determined for when the two confront once more. At the least with the knowledge of Domi Reversi in play currently in Elbaf, Brook will further be committed to entertaining that Shuri was not of a sound mind when she killed her father and may need rescuing. All of which is easier said than done of course, she's still currently in an ice block while Ragnir is busy with Loki fighting Imu.
Things however took a turn for the tragic, but the song does not yet seem to be over just yet.
This time I decided to do something by hand with the intention of honing my traditional paper illustration skills a bit.
The drawing is done in pen (with an initial pencil base). I took a big risk, I admit, since if you get it wrong the damage is irreversible; but if you know where to focus, the final result will be positive but, above all, clean.
I made a variation on his tattoos
1) because I didn't feel like doing all those polka dots
I've been wanting to use another of Jose Moro's illustrations as a reference since December, and it wasn't until now, after discovering Kizaru, that I was able to find the character that fit perfectly.
Although to be honest I feel I should put more effort into this, the ones I did of Napoleon and Josephine look better, but I think that's because the designs were already established.
