they jerked their head around to goggle at sylvana. love was inconsequential in the presence of duty, was it not? and emmrich was oathbound to the living and dead to neutralise johanna. she's given me no choice. by declaring her intention with the gloaming lantern, she forced his hand, for the threat of a half-lich wielding that dastardly contraption was immeasurable. doubtless the order faulted them. exile had been emmrich's suggestion. further mercy might exact a steeper toll than disappointment.

"... no," emmrich said weakly, "i will face her. for the friendship johanna and i once shared, i must."

THE HALLA'S MASK retracts stiffly as Emmrich wheels to face her suddenly, their features pinched in...anger? Disbelief? Confusion? Their use of the verb must only serves to further confuse her.

"Why?"

Surely it would be preferable to rest in the Lighthouse to grieve their friend without disturbance. From what she has observed of the Mourn Watch and of her colleague, ritual is an important practice when it comes to death and to grief. Surely such a ritual need not involve such intimate killing? A thick, heavy feeling pulls at her gut -- she should be more careful given the number of despair demons lurking in these corners, but thinking of Varric tends to heighten her already too-high tolerance for risk.

"Whether you stay or go, the friendship you shared will still remain and she will still die. Why must you make it more difficult?"

She's glad they're in the study, and not some kind of infirmary. As far as she knows, she isn't ill. She doesn't want to sit in a place that will make her feel ill, feel infected and helpless.

In silence, Alice pulls her shirt over her head, concealing the scarab once again. There are still goosebumps running down her arms, but the motion of wrapping herself in the blanket is rote, something she knows she should do, and does with no greater urgency than she would put on a coat.

The warmth takes its time to settle into her bones.

"I was studying at another university." Her throat tightens if she tries to name it; not because of anything that has a grip inside her, she thinks, except undiluted homesickness.

It was hot and dry, then. A summer night. She rests her head on her fist, staring out the window. In her mind, the aimlessly busy flakes through the glass become distant streaks of unimaginably fast, fiery white light.

"There was a—an accident. A meteor shower. I had left for home. It was very late, but other people were still inside, working and studying... The whole city saw the stars fall. But I'm the fool who ran back inside when everything was burning."

And she's the fool who would do it again.

IT'S AN IMMEDIATELY familiar story, one included in a report made by the Ambassador only a short time ago. She inhales deeply, drawing breath from an ancient sadness. Later, she will have to draw up the report for updating. For now, the mere thought of such an administrative task makes her bones feel as though they're already half-rotted in the ground. The sunset-pink lights of the beacons are giving way to purple, and soon to blue, soft and dim and signaling for rest.

When she was this young, she thinks, she had not been so eager to die.

"That was a foolish thing to do. But we will see if you live a life long enough to determine whether or not that makes you a fool."

Regally, her hand extends in druidcraft, and one of the Fundament's great roots snaking across the wall bends to push a small tea table closer to Alice. She then makes her way to a planted shrub, and as she approaches, one of its branches begins to wilt and to dry, dropping leaves into her hand.

"Are you in control?"

i never talk about sylvana's intense grief about losing her son because i don't want to be a downer about child death on the dash usually but. yeah a full sentence complete answer to the question "why is she like that" is because she lost her kid.
