Iron lung was stunning
something I fucking LOVE about the movie is that while simon is constantly apologizing for hurting people (flashing the camera, filament station, hitting the console and "hurting" the ship) we find out that he was such a killer people called him "the butcher" and that doesn't get confronted. It doesn't need to. This movie isn't about that.
We don't know for sure what he did or didn't do, or why he did it, or even the extent of how, but that doesn't MATTER because nobody deserves to be subjected to what he was. None of them did. Nobody deserves this and the narrative throws that at you over and over again. Even Ava, in the end, tells Simon that this isn't a punishment. If she could save him, she would, because she grows to recognize his humanity. Even though it's too late. Even though he was doomed the second they put him on that ship and she knew it.
But he's the kind of person to apologize for hurting even inanimate things, just as much as he's the kind of person to kill other people, just as much as he's the kind of person to save what he can and hope it means something. Idk I just really liked that. I liked it a lot

"I just want to live, is that so wrong? Why doesn't anyone else want that?" as "Why doesn't anyone want me, Simon, to live? Why did they weld me into this death trap with limited oxygen and no food or water, where other people have died before? Why is the commander so reluctant to even lift me out of the ocean?" AND as "Why doesn't anyone want to live? Why did my brothers get mad at me for trying to stop the bomb that would kill us all? Why were they fine being part of a death cult? Why did they view death as its own divinity? Why are even the stars dying?"
Ok so the thing about radiation is that it's hot.
Like there was an incident with an orphan source where 3 men found this piece of iron that was warm and used it as a heater. Stayed around it all night for warmth and carried it on their back. All three got really bad radiation burns from it and were often in and out of the hospital. At least one of them died.
(And if an orphan source is glowing, you're fucked. You need to throw that thing as far away from you as you can and fucking run. Your hand may not survive but you might.)
Onto Iron Lung: you remember how Simon was complaining about how hot it was in the ship? Do you remember how long he was in there for? How many pictures he took? How many times he used the camera for light?
He was never coming out unscathed.
"you sent me down here to die, and you don't even know my name?" was probably one of my favorite line deliveries in the whole movie.
that and when he was begging the voice to keep talking to him because he was certain he was about to die. like good shit good fucking shit
this is bigger than you, bigger than me, bigger than any of us.
giving everyone who made this movie possible a bouquet of flowers
