i get a lot of mileage out of the frustration management technique i call "substitution tests": (a) would i be just as irritated by this noise at a different time of day, or during a different task? (b) would i be just as frustrated if something else was making this amount/level of noise?

this helps with breaking down sensory overload into actionable/sociable items. instead of thinking "I hate this person for being loud", I have to formulate "I can't stand this level of noise when i'm tired from a busy day, but I don't fundamentally hate children", or "I would genuinely be less frustrated if it was a dog or infant being this loud, because an adult human could choose to act differently", or even "it's very frustrating that i can't block out the pitch of their voice, but they have the right to use their voice as much as anyone else (but maybe we can talk about keeping quiet hours after midnight)".

the point is to avoid building specific resentment for sources of noise. I don't hate my neighbour for vacuuming - 11AM is a normal time, clearly this is revealing my noise sensitivities more than anything. I don't hate dogs for barking, but I do wish their owners trained them into quieter expression of emotions (and fundamentally I just dislike loud pets and hobbies). et cetera.

so when it's nearly summer solstice, and the birds start singing at 3:30 in the morning and don't stop until 10:30 at night, and i wake up every morning at 4:00 and put earplugs in just to sleep until my alarm, and it's mid-afternoon and i'm vibrating in my seat thinking "is it normal to want to strangle a bird for its normal and allegedly beautiful birdsong", i can think through the following:

until living in this apartment birdsong didn't bother me at all

i still enjoy birdsong when i'm able to walk away from the bird

i'm delighted to see birds every single day

i know i don't hate children (refer to theorem 5.3), and yet if a child was positioned in my yard with a soundboard that they pressed evry 2.5 seconds, and they did this constantly between 04:00 and 23:00, i would similarly want to strangle a child

threfore, the current feelings i'm experiencing towards birds are not indicative of my actual opinion on birds

unlike a child, this behaviour is mandatory and uncontrollable for a bird. the bird cannot be reasoned with. it will be outside my window and make noise

therefore, the way the bird's noise spikes my frustration is a me problem that i have to manage between myself and my ears

Could I suggest a picture of Dawntreader Texas Calboy? He is a beautiful male calico cat who is a chimera. He's also somewhat controversial among some cat fancy associations since he is a male cat with female colors, and some people are strangely transphobic towards him, despite him being a cat? There was even a rule implemented to keep him from competing in a cat show. If you look up his name, he made a few news articles.

'Saturn' by Mitchell (1970)

The artist's full name is Horace Mitchell! I just learned a lot more about him in a fascinating article that came out today - How a Houston company got its art on the walls of stoners across America.

Here's the section that talks about this artist and poster:

Horace Mitchell was an undergraduate student at Rice University in 1968. Though he was studying physics, he was an amateur artist who loved science fiction novels and comic books. After reading about the Houston Blacklight in a local paper, Mitchell went to downtown Houston, sketchbook in tow. He sold his sketches to Jones, which would become the basis of four posters the company would publish: "The Trip," "Hassles," "Saturn" and "Chess." Mitchell was inspired by the work of the legendary Marvel Comics artists Jim Steranko and Jack Kirby, whose covers depicted towering characters set against psychedelic space-age landscapes.

"I had always sketched and drawn even as a kid," Mitchell remembered. "I got this bug that I would try to draw some big things."

The posters that went to market are different from what Mitchell drew. Some were resized, and colors were changed to be trippier under a black light. But for Mitchell, it was an exercise in representing abstract emotions and thoughts—ideas like space and time, optimism about the future—in accessible ways.

"It was sort of groundbreaking, the kinds of things they put in the posters that then wound up hanging in students' rooms because they represented ideas that really resonated with the students," Mitchell said.

That experience would serve him well in a much different role. After he finished his master's and PhD, Mitchell went on to work at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, running the agency's Scientific Visualization Studio in 1991, making hundreds of videos explaining everything from Mars' magnetic fields to hurricane animations. His work has been on news channels around the nation and even appeared in Leonardo DiCaprio's 2016 documentary Before the Flood. But he has always seen his work for the Houston Blacklight as the foundation of his career.

"I always had a joke: people would ask, 'Well, are you a real artist?' And I'll say, yes, I am. I'm published, but only because of those four things that got printed," Mitchell joked.

emotional responses are deeply evolutionarily advantageous in any animals that are making complex decisions and behaviors (in many vertebrates, say) because they act as a reinforcer for a behavior. a bird taking a vigorous bath in a puddle is probably happy because if that behavior didnt elicit a positive feeling they wouldn't do it (it is dangerous to be on the ground and wet!). if an animal can feel fear, which i think is a less contested assertion to make, then it can certainly feel the opposite, that is, happy.
