ARTISTS! You have been honing your craft for YEARS. Think a doctor or a plumber or virtually any professional with a special skill and a minimum of 5-10 years experience is charging $4/hr? No.

Just starting out? Great! You should be at least be making minimum wage. Start timing yourself whenever you work! Does it typically take you 4 hours to draw a single character on a simple background? Charge $35-40! If potential clients complain about pricing, kindly decline. If folks want good art, they can save up for it. If they want cheap art, they can make it themselves for free.

It's rough. Business might slow down. You might need to take a part-time or a full-time job to pay the bills. But on the flip side, with time you can find yourself with a full commission queue even after you've raised your rates to try and slow down work. Your time and skills are valuable, so start treating them that way!
